  • In this episode I'll demonstrate how I engraved the master scroll sampler plate that created the castings featured in my last Quick Tip video #4. You can use this video to follow along as you cut your own practice plate.
    The castings used for transfer can be found in my web store at:

    I use GRS Tools in my studio on a daily basis. Here are some links to the tools I use. Most of these will include free shipping and the channel gets a small kickback so you are helping support more content creation.

    Once again, you demonstrate the skills that show evidence of a master. You make the difficult look easy and that is a sign of a master. It's always a pleasure to watch a skilled artisan.

    Hey Layne! Thanks for all these kick ass videos, I can’t tell you how much they are teaching me.
    Just wanted to ask how the rotary hand piece compares to a Foredom? Is it worth adding the handpiece to my collection?
    Also, just wanted to give a quick video suggestion! As someone who is pretty new to engraving I have had a lot of trouble finding videos on how to make some of the more uncommon gravers. Maybe you could do a video showing how to make a bunch of different gravers using the dual angle dial on the Apex? I know it would help me out a lot and many others I’m sure.

    Great tips video for the beginner. Probably a few good tips in there for someone who's a little more experienced (although I wouldn't know)
    The video was, for me, hugely overshadowed by the smooth dobro playing of who can only be Jerry Douglas. I've never heard the piece before but I'd go my house against yours that it is indeed Douglas on dobro and in the CD/LP credits.

    • @MasterEngraverTV
      @MasterEngraverTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rich Nelson I do plan on doing something about basics but it’s really something that is best learned in an apprenticeship type setting. Jason Marchiafava offers a hand push video lesson but it’s a fairly expensive set of DVDs and it doesn’t really replace hands on lessons. Hand pushing is by far the most difficult method and takes a few years of cutting straight lines and circles to gain proficiency. Plus you are limited to soft metals. Hand push gravers are only used by jewelers and bulino engravers.

    • @MasterEngraverTV
      @MasterEngraverTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rich Nelson as a jeweler you have a leg up on most. Jason’s video is the most comprehensive lesson available. There’s just too much info to convey on TH-cam. It takes 20 hours of editing to make a 20 min video. So I keep things simple.

      @@MasterEngraverTV alrighty I'll check them out, since I can't afford a power system mostly just trying to make sure I'm still doing the basics right, like hand placement and pushing technique.... Your video on sharpening was helpful I think I have been making my heel way to huge and that puts me at a funky angle and makes following the curvature of a ring much harder when I'm cutting a channel, course I'm also doing this all with just a ring clamp, bench pin, and optivisor, so can't get any more bare bones lol

    Really a pleasure to watch your skills and you clear instructions as you go alone. I have a couple of questions, or requests. 1. would you take some time to show in more details the tools you use, as it is hard to get a picture of them in the close up engraving. 2. I mostly find it hard to pick up names of people and their other channels like Instagram as my hearing is not great. maybe add these to your video in text would be great. My interest in engraving is to try some on knives or axes that I make. My late father was a watch maker and jeweller. He used and electric engraver. We used to get your style of engraving done with a master engraver up in Belfast, that N. Ireland where I live. I have a gold ring I got for my 21st birthday back in 1978 which was hand engraved, it is beautiful. Thanks again for taking the time to share you craft, I really appreciate you skill and time to communicate it. Hugo Dale N. Ireland.
