Why Does My Wi-Fi Suck?

  • WiFi is the amazing creation that lets us stay connected to the internet without any physical connections. But sometimes it can be so finicky. What makes it do this? Let's take a look.

    You pretty much covered the basics without saying that cheap router could me moded with another firmware like dd-wrt and having its transmit power turned up which has its own issues.
    Something to mention for speed is legacy devices, your typically limited to the slowest device on the network.

    • @Tinkernut
      @Tinkernut  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mark Williams i covered dd-wrt in the tutorial about making a repeater that i linked to in this video, so i thought it'd be unnecessary to repeat it all again. and that's true about legacy devices. I probably should have mentioned it. but hey, that's what the comments show is for! thanks!

      @markistheone 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tinkernut oh sweet you replied :-)
      I use to mod routers for a hobby and use to build x86 dd-wrt routers (out of old computers) and put in 2x 2.4GHz wireless cards. One was just a high powered 1x1 card dedicated to B/G devices (some would have cards for all 3 B/G/N) and the other would be a decent 3x3 MIMO for N stuff. I built these for companies with weird needs.
      I had to be careful to do site surveys and make sure the cross talk or overlapping channels didn't cause issues.
      And since A stuff is kinda rare with the exception of the original Xbox 360 wireless adapter I just put in a decent 3x3 5Ghz one for N.
      If I still did this I may do tri band for AC stuff but then again dd-wrt, openwrt, tomato, etc have kinda been dead community wise for the last few years and I kinda lost interest unfortunately.
      Have a good one, love the videos :-)

    Pretty much spot on , I love that WiFi analyzer android app, it's one of the best I've seen and my choice, I understand the antenna orientation, but the real world issue is antenna polarization, although perfectly vertical is probably going to give optimal reception to every device at the same elevation anyways although on a hill it's a different story, another thing I have found is in *some* metal buildings you get dead zones here and there when you place the router in a corner or near the center of a building I suspect this is due to multi-path. Perhaps a video on antenna theory, multi-path interference, and signal propagation theory are beyond the scope of even a couple short videos that will keep the attention of the average viewer.

    I've been using 3 access points to cover the whole spectrum, each with the same SSID/WPA2 Keyword and I can just roam from spot to spot and keep the devices per access point low and the distance to the device lower. Both have increased speeds in my house where streaming multiple streams over wifi is typical. I use Ethernet to bring the network to the access point, so I also gain Ethernet ports at each place as well.
    The biggest reason for doing this was to cut down on the signal noise from other AP's in my neighborhood. I have trouble breaking -30dB @ 1m because of the incredible 2.4Ghz noise. That and my house is a rectangle so one access point doesn't get the edges upstairs without repeating anyways. Repeaters add traffic and ultimately slow things down. I'd rather have multiple hard-wired access points.
    Checkout Ubiquiti Uni-fi 3 pack for an example of an out of the box solution to what I did.

    • @joelb79
      @joelb79 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      joelb79 before people ask, one AP on CH1, one AP on CH6, and the other on CH11.

  • @hikaru-live
    @hikaru-live 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can set up Wi-Fi roaming using two or more access points if your house have good structural cabling. This will allow your device to automatically pick the AP with the best reception. All you need is configure all your access points using the same SSID, encryption method and key, but different non-overlapping channels.

    I always wondered why there are times where my phone is trying to load something, and the little wifi icon at the top of the screen (on an Android) will show that it is either sending/receiving data or doing both, but then suddenly it will stop, and whatever I'm trying to do will come to a halt as well, almost as if my phone forgot what it was trying to do and therefore decided it didn't need to continue transmitting data even though it's still connected to wifi.

    Here is my 2 cents on the "crowded neighborhood" problem. Most wifi signals use multiple channels for bandwidth. Basically 802.11g would use multiple channels of 802.11b to get that 54 mbs bandwidth. This means that a wifi signal on channel 1 will get interference from any wifi signals on 2-5. So if you neighbor is on channel 1, you need to go use 6 or 11. At 3:08 you will see what I am talking about. Those signals are big humps and a signal will spread amongst channels.

    You could use ethernet over Powerline or Power-line communication (PLC) and re transmit the signal at the weak area of the building. I use that in my garage.

    +Tinkernut @1:13 or so..... one thing.... floors arent generally thinner than walls in houses.....interior walls have wires and pipes in them generally. floors mainly have floor joists. when they do run wires through the floor, they do it in a fairly straight line. when they run them in a wall, they end up covering more space as they have to supply power to lights, switches, heaters, outlets, ect....so, this is likely why wifi goes through floors better than walls...because there is more metal to interfere with the signal in a wall than there is in a floor.
    i could be wrong about metal being the cause....but i've framed and finished many residential houses and since floor joists are generally 2x8's, 2x10's and 2x12's.....while interior wall studs are 2x4's....i am fairly certain that most interior walls are not thicker than the floor. . just fyi.
    i love the vids and have learned a ton from them!

    Hi, I work for wireless Internet support, if you live in a place where there are too many wifi signal (yes that does interfere with the speed) why? Because of the channel setting (wave setting) on all the routers or modem/routers are on the default channel 1 , by logging into ur router you can change the channel to a different one like 6 or 11 and that will increase ur speed because all the other routers are using channel 1 and urs is using 6..

    Great video. 5ghz is the way to go, on my 2.4ghz my Internet speed is ~30mbps on 5ghz it's 65mbps and LAN/powerline is 65mbps. Be careful tho as you need 5ghz WiFi cards in order to connect. (most phones/tablets will have 5ghz / dualband card) for static devices use powerline, this also helps remove strain on your WiFi (as mentioned in video) I find also restarting your router every few months helps, I'd assume clears bufferbloat. Happy networking!

If at all possible, get a hard line (ethernet) extender or ask your ISP if they offer an access point. Also, cordless phones, wireless gaming controllers, Bluetooth devices, wireless security cameras, baby monitors, hell even some microwaves can also interfere on that 2.4g band.
