  • 3D printers are becoming very popular amongst hobbyists and makers, but they are very expensive to own. Want to make your own 3D printer without having to shell out hundreds of dollars for it? This video will show you how to build your own for less than $100. You can find specific details at the Project Page link below:

    Nicely done! It's not anything I would attempt to build but this gives real good illustration of the basic workings of a 3D printer. Thanks for sharing!

    @farvision you'd need three pens, and you'd have to program the axis that had the pens on it to move to the right / left to centre the pen as it witches colour, so you couldn't do it at the same time but you could do it, though you wouldn't have much room because the movement is limited to the length of the tracks the plates run on

    Excellent with one question,on a standard cnc a negative z axis command drives the z down into the workpiece and a positive z axis drives the z up from the workpiece.Have you got the z axis inverted in the GRBL settings or did you wire the Z in reverse. have the exact same setup as yours ,I have been wanting to do the 3d thing and now I will get it done,also what speed control setting did you use on the 3d pen.....WCH

    Epic as! Recently been thinking along the same lines so I did up an eBay shopping list of all the 3D Printer bits I could find for super cheap - hotends are actually available as low as 10 bucks (e3d clones) and you could use a bowden style design so there's less weight on the cdrom drives. Those 3D Pens are getting so cheap and nasty, I was at least expecting at tiny geared stepper in there!

    that's absolutely amazing, i might have to build this because ive wanted a 3d printer for a while now but they are all just too expensive.
    would i be able to make the plastic components for a higher end 3d printer using this? in other words, would i be able to use this to build up from a cheep 3d printer to a higher end one incrementally? of course i would have to buy the electronics, but those cost significantly less than a pre built printer.

  • @vappster
    @vappster 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Top notch stuff! I've recently got a bunch of old IDE CD and DVD drives for free so I might try to make this printer for myself! Thanks for the video! :D
    Just a quick question tho: could one use an old PC instead of an Arduino? I have a really old Athlon XP PC collecting dust somewhere in my garage and it has an old parallel port, which AFAIK was used a lot for DIY projects back in the day due to its many in/out pins and being really easy to interface with programs, so it would be neat to give a new purpose to that old hunk o' junk!

    Hi i've been following ur tutorial to make a 3d printer using the cd rom drives but the three stepper motor doesnt rotate with my easydriver only the z axis moves fine . X axis never rotates at all and Y axis only moved once . I checked the connections and even tried to increase power but the problem didn't resolved. The software portion works just like yours . And i am a little lost..

    on ebay u can buy an extruder for like $30

    • @thefierypaladin126
      @thefierypaladin126 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hot glue gun would be another $15, and the filament would be about $20, so it would cost more for a lower quality product .

    • @BenNottelling
      @BenNottelling 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get the hot glue gun from a garage sale or a thrift shop.

    • @thefierypaladin126
      @thefierypaladin126 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ben nottelling- The extruder would be $30, the filament would be $20, so even without the hot glue gun,it would still cost more than just buying a pen.

    • @iDeNoh
      @iDeNoh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +UPandUNDER Normally I would suggest that you avoid a cheap extruder at all costs, they are almost *always* garbage. But considering this printer is literally just scrap, it would probably work well enough. That being said, you would be limited to using a bowden setup with a regular extruder as you wont find a hotend with an embedded motor that would wouldn't weigh too much to be driven

    • @jacobpaniagua8785
      @jacobpaniagua8785 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kain Arrowny hot glue gun = $3 and 20 for filament and 25 for extruder (yes, $25) while the pen option is low resolution _and_ $45. So, $3 extra for about 3x precision. Fair trade in my opinion. Also, you can MAKE an extruder quite easily actually. just a couple motors and some gears, I already made one out of extra parts from the dvd drives for the CNC machine.

    Hi tinkernut. I was fascinated by built-your-own 3d printer with different parts. What I see in your video is that you use Arduino as your board and 3d pen as the nozzle that has its own thermoplastic heater. Basically, from what I know, the Arduino itself serve its purpose as the "brain" and the motor as the "actuator". I have a project revolving around 3d printer and I want to make 2 nozzles instead of 1. Could I make an electrical branch on the Arduino and still have the same output? I want to make them move synchronously. Thanks.
