One useful application would be communicating with your game cams/security cams across a larger property, where you wouldn't want to bury miles of wires but the same time want to be independent from the internet.

My original idea back in college was to hoard routers, pass them among my neighbors in emergency events, get apache or ftp installed on whatever computers needed it, then get the routers connected to eachother. Thing is, I'm not sure how I would work out inter-router things. And even if I could.... everyone in my neighborhood is older than dinosaur poop :/

Florida is the last place you wanna be in an apocalypse...
Florida would be the worst place because it has a shit load of Arms running(more dangerous people are likely to exploit your resourcefulness). The main demographic would be OLD people, so no help or collaboration anytime soon. The weather is humid in summer(overheating).
Your best bet would be Colorado or Utah.

One interesting thing that was glanced over a bit:
Internet doesn't mean wireless! While it's impractical on any large scale to wire a connection to many people, this video seems to mainly be discussing local scale internet anyway. You can eliminate many of the roadblocks which these systems encounter (and albeit introduce a few new ones), while also making your connection faster and more stable just by using wires instead of wireless.
I fact, if you have numerous cell phone devices, you can connect them all to a computer and enable data sharing via usb. This super simple 'plug and play' option can essentially turn the desktop (or other non-mobile os system) into a server. You can load data from one phone to the computer, and then the computer to the phone. This is the same concept as the internet, and can be done without installing any extra software (at least for windows users, Idk about mac/linux).

    Great tutorial!
In Hungary, at us, government wanted to implement tax on the internet. If that had happened I would have wanted to create a kind of new internet with my friends or something. Or before I got my first smartphone, I looked for tutorials how can I share internet connection via Bluetooth. I ended up writing two J2ME apps to send source code to my previous phone. It was very slow took minutes to transfer a few words.
These are my experiences with creating my own network

You would only need lots of Routers, Switches, Cables, WiFi Sticks Servers and Clients. In some way, if you disconnect your ISP router from the Internet, you have your own "internet". Get your neighbors to share it with you, host some websites, and it works.

    2. Now connect some repeaters to that
    3. Now connect some repeaters to each of them
    4. Repeat step 3 until it fits you

The internet is just a Network of interconnected networks and sub-nets where protocol for packet forwarding makes this system addressable. All you can do is build onto the network, the internet isn't a thing you make its the result of what was made from a world wide perspective.

So basically to even get it started you still need an ISP provider. Without a base device having internet access, you cannot create a mesh network. If I am wrong in this, please explain because I still confused as to how you just start from scratch without needing an ISP provider. In Cuba they use mesh networks to communicate, but someone (a base person/device/or starting point/origin) has access to internet. Thank you for the video.

Soumit Biswas The physical layer is the actual hardware. You can just buy them on amazon. You con't have to get them from your ISP.

Let’s be thankful for all else we can do w/ it but humanity has to learn to think for themselves instead of being a follower
