  • In this tip I show you how to fix a chicken wing in your golf swing. This is one of the worst flaws you can do so if you cure this you will hit your irons pure and driver way longer.
    Body Swing free samples here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
    one of the biggest swing faults for amateur golfers is a chicken wing. So many golfers do it so there must be a reason for it. Well, I am here to tell you that in this tip that there is a reason. Once you know that, you are on your way to fixing it.
    Along with curing your chicken wing come new feelings which you need to get used to. This is not hard but it is different so unless you know them you will go right back to you old swing and never fix this flaw.
    Finally, along with fixing your chicken wing comes another flaw you may start doing. Don't worry because if you see this other flaw showing up in your swing it's actually telling you that you are changing. Near the end of this lesson I show you how to cure that too so this tip really has it all.
    So carefully follow my instruction. If so, you will fix your chicken wing in no time and start to hit solid irons, take divots and hit your driver longer than ever.

    This is so helpful. I recorded my swing as you suggested. Sure enough, I found my practice swings which had a wider arc and no chicken wing lifted the back foot a split second sooner compared to the swing I made when I hit the ball. That swing had a visible chicken wing. I haven’t tried it on the range but this will definitely be the first thing I work on. Thank you for possibly preventing me from overhauling my swing again.

    Paul- could you discuss whether you teach any lifting of the arms in the backswing. Do you feel the arms are moved totally by the body turn plus some momentum or whether you actually lift the arms a bit to the top to get to a higher position. Thanks.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to lift the arms up until they go there on their own. So you are rotating to 3/4 back then lift so you can set the top.

    Hey Paul I was struggling with push/slicing and on a previous video you mentioned the extension 2 feet past the ball. However when I was practicing tonight I tried to feel that but for me I am sure it was at two feet but it felt like the extension was at the ball in the arc so to speak. Maybe because the swing is so fast it feels like at the ball but by the time my arms extend the club head is two feet past like you say. In any event it worked. Your previous tip straightened out my iron shots.

  • @wendellmurray9934

    Mr Wilson. Excellent tip. Practice swings still perfect, but when hitting the ball, still a chicken swing. Barely a chicken swing, but still there. The lifting of the foot is the useful tip. I will try that tomorrow. Also I made a screen shot of your driving to have an individual frame just before you hit the ball. Same swing more or less, it seems, to the swing used for irons. I practiced the driver for the first time in a while today. Generally I hit the ball flush, more lower shots than higher shots. So far as I can tell both the lower trajectory and the higher trajectory reach somewhere around 240 yards, perhaps somewhat beyond with the higher trajectory. Still a slight chicken swing there as with the irons. I have been using a pitching wedge to try to duplicate the practice swing. Looser arms, lifted right heel, may do the trick. Beyond bizarre to me that I can do perfect practice swings without thought, then a few seconds later in front of the ball, I have a chicken swing. Looking frame by frame of the videos, I can see that I automatically raise my heel in the practice swing, bending my right leg inward and down, so that the top of my body moves back. That automatically makes my right arm completely straight, bending my left arm. My hands appropriately ahead of ball, then the arms completely outstretched, as you illustrate in the various videos including this on. To repeat, I will send you $97 when I correct this. Not only that, but once corrected, I can finally venture out to play on a golf course! Some beautiful courses nearby.

      Glad you liked it. Thanks. I have numerous chicken wing tips because some people latch on to different things. As for you, understand why you do a chicken wing. It is caused from having tight wrists. I cure people all the time in 10mins. I haven't been giving it away on YT as I sell a product to fix the chicken wing. For you, I will basically give it to you. Do this drill while hitting balls. 7 iron tee it up (not driver until you get it with 7 iron). These are 3/4 swings. Keep doing it for about 5-10 mins. If so, you will naturally lengthen the swing without thinking about it and the chicken wing will be gone. You'll see. Video it:
      th-cam.com/video/SfIM2GWj9Cs/w-d-xo.html
      This will probably get rid of it too:
      th-cam.com/video/syZXIyJNH-Y/w-d-xo.html
      Do this drill:
      th-cam.com/video/tHipoVuEzI4/w-d-xo.html
      Might as well video yourself do that too while hitting a ball. No way you can do that with tight wrists.
      Let me know.

      Thanks again for recommendation. The irons are without chicken-wing. After solving that, I moved to practicing with driver. My initial swings at the ball 2 months or so ago were horrendous. Even though my practice swings are more or less perfect, as I have noted repeatedly so far, as soon as I stand up to hit the ball, some level of chicken swing. Absurd, but this is what happens. My best guess is too much arm on downswing. I keep trying to leave arms completely flaccid on downswing, but my automatic response is to tighten, then chicken wing. Every week or so, I have been reducing the level of the chicken swing at least, so some progress. I practiced today with driver. Swing felt good when hitting ball, but who knows until I look at the video in slow motion. Sorry, as usual, to take up your time, but I prefer to at least let you know that every one of your videos on TH-cam is excellent!

    • @paulwilsongolf

      @@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the 10th time! I have not video-recorded myself the last few times practicing on the range. I have been hitting perhaps 40 balls per session the last few times, with many practice swings. Without recording myself, I can never be certain whether I still have a chicken wing with the driver when everything seems perfect. Distance when hitting the ball perfectly seems to be 250 yards rather than 230 yards. Too hard to judge whether the ball ends up within 10 yards or so from the range end, which is somewhere between 265 to 270 yards. My best guess continues to be that my arms are still not fully loose - close! - on the downswing when hitting a ball. Yes, I will do the drill daily that you recommend. I will arrive where I need to be, but so far absurd that I am not there already two months ago! FYI, I have recommended your videos to at least one friend. Whether he or others follow up, I do not know. You recommendations, as I have noted endlessly, are superb.

      Take an athletic stance. Short stop position. Not all bent over. Then measure the butt of the club to your belt buckle at 6" inches. The chicken wing is you hitting with your arms. This tightens your wrists. Do this drill and video your swing first and you will see it will be gone:

    Paul, as you know Ive been watching and replying to your videos. I practice a lot of these techniques. TODAY however, I had my first lesson and I was very frustrated. I had CHICKEN WING GALORE! I had never videoed myself so I had no idea. I did not rotate as I struck the ball but instead followed through AFTER the ball was struck. I was flat footed..the chicken wing caused my club to pull too soon towards the 11 o'clock position in the arc instead of continuing through (circular arc instead of elliptical). I had mixed emotions. I was glad that your videos address so many of my issues, but then again frustrated that I have not learned from them. This is not criticizing you, this is just venting that Im having a hard time "getting" it, even though Im understanding it very well. Can you please point me to your top 2-3 videos/drills other than this one to help me get back on track. I am so desparately wanting to enjoy this game and play on the same course with my 8-handicap neighbor (just play with him, not beat him.) Thanks again.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully, your instructor is on the same page as me. Most aren't so if you are taking lessons and trying to do things that don't mesh it's not going to work.
      Most people are flat footed so I would be working on this first. You can also work on the chicken wing in practice swings at home. It take you getting used to the feeling of letting go and allowing the club to fully extend. As you work on it you may hit fat shots. This tells you the arc is getting wider (which is a good thing). Make the shift to stop the fat shots into the future.
      So you need to understand this stuff takes time. You try to fix everything you will get nothing. So anyone who comes to me for lessons I am going to work grip and set up. Then I will get them hinging and rehinging early so they hook every shot. This tells us it is working. Yes, it is on the wrong direction but I am only working spin. You get it hooking and you are releasing it and delofting it. Both of these things will get you power. This is a great confidence booster. Once you can do that you keep the feeling of releasing it as you make the switch to body to straighten it out. If you start putting slice spin on it you back up and roll the wrists again to loosen them up. Then you go back to body to hit the ball. When adding body you watch the ball. Pull/pull hooks means quicker body. Push/push fades means you are driving too hard so slow down. So think about what I just said. You are working on the pieces. Arm unit or body. To get perfect contact turn off the arms completely.
      Do these daily:
      Wrist Release Drills

      @@paulwilsongolf Thanks for the long thought-out reply. I did not tell him that I am "watching videos" but I am really glad Im watching yours. I can consider all the input and process it without conflicting. I am REALLY glad I watched so many of your first for a couple reasons: 1. I understood what he said because you exposed me to the info and 2. He did not even mention my grip which he might have had to do if I didnt follow your instructions on that. I met a young, strong athletic guy there last week that said his whole first lesson was about grip, alignment and addressing the ball. Im sure if this guy is a teaching pro, he observed those with me but since we didnt have to address these points, Im chalking it up to my following your instruction on this. He also said that he saw a few other things but they looked "minor" and by addressing the "Chicken wing" we can definitely get rid of the 10* offline hits and the distance. He said my club faced looked pretty squared at impact, and that was confirmed by my "pull" hit when I got the arm straightened out. My next lesson is Monday, and I have some drills to help me with the straight arm (cover head under left arm pit, 7" ball between the arms, left arm only swing while keeping back of right hand under left elbow). Your instruction on "letting the club go" to straighten the arms makes a lot of sense, but when I think I AM doing that, I record another video and still see the chicken wing. I THINK I am feeling it but I guess I am not. I am being patient though as nobody ever gained 50 yards per club or hit a perfectly straight ball after 1 lesson and a couple weeks of drills. My goal is to see progress. I am continuing to watch your instruction. Thanks again!

      Oh, I forgot about your comment in the beginning...YES, I am flat-footed..I didnt know that either but my turn is coming after striking the ball. Im going to work on your drills regarding getting that right foot flipped to the inner side, then rotating to the tip and observe the timing of that in reference to striking the ball ( a couple inches up as point out with irons) Thanks

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad the grip and alignment are good. I assume the set up to. It all starts with that. I don't think any of those things are going to fix the chicken wing. You need to secure your grip and loosen your wrists to do it. None of those things address that. I would be focusing more on firing the lower body. Even with the chicken wing you can still hit great shots if you use the body. Once you get that working then go back to the chicken wing.

      @@paulwilsongolf Yes Sir. I had lesson 2 today and the chicken wing improved immensely, and the body turn was better but still not there. We worked on the wrist firing today and the body firing. The body firing is difficult because I feel like I AM FIRING but when we looked at my vs pro, I am way behind. At a lost now on how to get that "feeling". When I watch you it looks so easy but IDK what the "mental block" is on this. Ill keep trying but Luckily everything Im learning live is corresponding to your instructions. Thanks

      Glad you are getting back on track. I did that swing too many years ago. It hurt my arms. I grew up 10 mins from Moe. Met him many times over the years. Minimal hip rotation though. Not big on that. You need the hips for power.

    This is what I was dealing with when I loosened up. Not just hitting behind it but grounding it…almost not getting to the ball.

      Right. You were seeing that as a bad shot when really it was telling you that you were fixing it. Just get off the back foot more to clear the arc. You've got this. Here are some more:

    This is what I was doing when I loosened up. I got very frustrated, not knowing why. Could not figure it out. I was not just hitting behind. I was digging in so bad I almost didn’t make it to the ball.

    A lot of explanation of how it happens but very little on any drills to fix.

      Well, if I give you 5 things to work on you won't work on anything so why not work on what I explained in the tip> I do have other chicken wing tips too.

    I've tried it. My brain won't accept the information. My slight chicken wing has trained my mind and it's telling my mind that this motion will allow you to hit straight balls. Because of it I have a hard time drawing the ball. I hit 95% of my balls straight and 4% fades. 1% draws.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure if there is a question here or not. Pretty easy to draw it if you just do what I call the "fake" draw. Not sure why you would want to draw it unless you absolutely had to. Watch: th-cam.com/video/UelTA7btZg8/w-d-xo.html

      @@paulwilsongolf It's just when I try to release and rotate my wrists through extension that thing is going unwantedly left. My left arm stabilizes my club face's path. I think my body rotation slows down at impact to create my desired ball flight and that actually is the cause of my chicken wing. When I try to extend the club past the ball like you were showing I lose all feel of the club.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are seeing left as bad. I am seeing it as half right. See the confusion. If it is going left left then you are actually releasing the club. This would mean the arm unit is working. Once you can consistently do that you switch to body to straighten it out. wrists = spin body = direction.
