Colin, if you ever experience a swelling like that after a sting or bite, you need to treat it like it will become anaphylaxis. You were not far from losing your airway. If you're not already carrying epinephrine, benedryl, and prednisone, get in touch with a doctor who works with sailors (I know Elayna has the contacts) and get those things on board into your kit. It may just save your life.

As an EMT, The above advice is right on. You guys a a bit too remote to experiment with reactions like that. I love that the show must go but it will go on longer with you than without. Now that you know you have reactions like that you best be keeping an epi-pen handy. I would save it for problems breathing but some Benadryl and Prednisone would not have been a miss.

Now that is some good medical advice especially travelling on a boat far from hospital treatment.

Yeah, I’d have gone for Benedryl at the first sign of swelling. That could have been life threatening.
Benedryl is otc, but there are companies that will sell emergency kits of prescription drugs to have on hand. If you don’t already have something like that, I’d suggest looking into it.

I agree with the others since I had a similar reaction years ago. I had hives, those bumps you had all over, my feet, hands and neck/face turned red. Then I started to feel like I had something caught in my throat and started to have breathing problems. All I had at home was a bottle of antihistamines. The antihistamines helped but I ended up taking three doses over a course of an hour, waiting 20 minutes between doses to see if they were starting to work. They finally did. When I finally saw my doctor a few hours later he basically told me I was an idiot for not calling an ambulance as I could easily have died. I have a friend, a fire department Captain, who said they treat people with allergic reactions all the time, and some have died from waiting too long to call for help.

It usually takes several events of exposure to development a full blown anaphylactic reaction, you are there with facial edema, this is serious as it means your airways are swollen. Low BP, tachycardia poor oxygenation and a whole raft of systemic shut down follows. With your reaction the next time may be really serious Colin. You need to put epi-pens in your medical kit, one pen will work for around 20 minutes so you need around 5, it gives you time to get to the medical facility, then you need IV antihistamine, anti inflammatory, a salbutamol inhaler for your airways Take this seriously Colin, especially if you are way off grid.
    Nest time take antihistamine ASAP.
JOHN RN A and E, ITU 40+ years
    Suggestions for your medical kit.
    Prednisolone tablets
    Corticosteroid cream
    Antihistamine
    Ephedrine injections
If you develop a wheeze, tightness in the airways a Beta 2 Antagonist inhaler, there are others medics may recommend you have around.
Like I said colin, your reaction was systemic and serious, the next time may be a lot worse as your system has been sensitized.

Someone asked how long will a pen last
Once given the effectiveness diminish over 20-30 minutes, we often have to give multiple shots until specialized care can be got to. Concerning the shelf life it depends on the maker, ingredients, anything from 18 months up to 3 years, each manufacturer has its own recommendations, saying that people have used them past these dates because they haven’t up dated their supply, they do still work. There has been research on their overall potency in using them past the recommended expiry, one study showed 70% of the ephedrine still around, 3-7 years, however there isn’t much on the outcomes they achieve. They do recommend if you have an allergic reaction and all you have is an out of date pen then use it. If it is off colored, has bits in it, risky.
Avoid storing the fridge, ice packs, too cold or too hot, 15-25 C, keep in the dark.
Make friends with ants when dealing with nuts up a tree!

@@KatieParlayRevival Thanks Katie. Have more than the one based on Colin’s reaction ( face swelling ) with all the other goodies I mentioned. A person that’s developed sensitized immune response to one thing can become allergic to things that were ok before, other bites, food, most tragically sea food and red wine! My mate had a first reaction with sand flies, then prawns. I sat with him in the AE car park whilst he ate different prawns, we found 4 types he could eat, he was a dedicated Chef. AE staff thought it hilarious

We live on the Mississippi gulf coast and we constantly battle fire ants. I've seen a couple of people have a bad reaction, but when they get me, it just leaves tiny little pus filled bumps. And, of course, it hurts like hell (fire) when they do bite you.

Here's one for when cold and you need to sleep: dig a shallow hole (the size of whoever gets to sleep there) in the sand. Fill it with a layer of glowing coals from the fire or build the fire there, spread out the coals, and then move the fire elsewhere. Cover with sand. Wait 10 minutes. Lie down where you burrowed the coals. If too hot, add sand. Will keep you warm and toasty all night. Might come in handy if the girls kick you off the boat or (like happened to me and a friend once) if your dinghy is gone when you want to get back on board at two AM in an anchorage with lot's of current... Much enjoying your channel, keep up the good work!

dig a bed in the sand out in the sun during the day so all the sand heats up. After dark take the palms and lay over the top of you to hold the heat in . it blocks the wind also. Remember cool sand in the shade will take the heat from you. The sand pit is a no go if it rains so have a back up plan, ALWAYS have a backup plan.

I got bit by like 5 red ants a few weeks ago and got super dizzy, nauseated, and hives all over my body for like 45 minutes. And I'm NOT allergic to red ants.

In all seriousness you need to familiarize yourself with Allergic reactions and how if let untreated immediately you amplify future reactions by your immune system to the point of death in the absence of an epipen. The smart move next time ,if you survive the first 5 minutes, is to get Benadryl immediately. The more the reaction is mitigated immediately the less you body can be trained to respond violently to future reactions. It goes without saying that you need to have an EPIPEN at all times from here on out if your cruising in the environments.

Oh my gosh! Watching this gave me goosebumps!recently I was stung by dozens of bees, I felt everything you did, it’s horrible. The stages of burning pain itching swelling, awful. I’m so glad you’re ok, cause that’s no fun at all. The island was beautiful.

Colin, I have Chronic Urticaria and it is triggered by food allergies. So, I have to use Benadryl almost daily and an epi-pen in severe cases and prednisone if I have to go the ER... I am screaming at the screen for you to use an epi-pen ASAP! As stated in other comments, several epi-pens is a must have item in your Trauma Kit! Any time the swelling affects my lips or tongue I use the epi-pen immediately! You can't wait or you stand the risk of it closing your airway, which is too late for the epinephrine, to take effect. This is a great ER training video and it is good to know that fire ants live in coconut trees.

I love Colin and Jamie's friendship. You're like real brothers. I never knew how important it would be to have a magnifying glass. My mouth was watering watching you eat the fresh crab and juicy coconut water. It was great to see the boys, Lindo and McFly. They held up pretty well! Great episode guys and gals!

Actually if you live in a fire 🐜 country, you get bitten and eventually your body gets used to it and there will be no swelling. Unfortunately a very few get serious life threatening conditions but highly unusual.
My first time , my arm swelled up like a sausage but after a week or so, all gone ! After that i was pretty much immune until I left the area for 10 years and then same thing happened when i came back , with same results and getting over it.

Colin. Find a pic on the net of a corpse that its owner died of anaphylactic shock. You need to be VERY aware and afraid. Take care Sam.

Antiphalatic shock . From the poison, had a buddy went to a party got a little to drunk fell asleep on the front deck of the house no hand rails or posts to stop you from rolling off and he rolled off the deck . Right on top of a huge fire ants pile . Sleeping threw the bits next morning. He was 🤏 close from kidney and liver failure. I gave him benadryl asap . And he was rushed 40 minutes to the hospital. Where they had him 2 weeks. Got very lucky . I've seen 2 people die from only 1 ant bite . Its nuts. Don't play with it next time .

Hi Colin and crew. It appears that Colin is hypersensitive to fire ants. I would make sure you have at minimum benadryl and prednisone for emergent use. If you can get epinephrine vials as well for extreme airway involvement You dodged a bullet as your lips and ears and eyelids had developed swelling, that and the hives indicate that the reaction was systemic. Next time it can involve airway swelling and that would be less than ideal. All the best ! ER RN.

Yup, Florida is almost out of hand with fireants... You had a mild anaphylactic reaction... I was repotting my Moringa, and there was a nest in the pot. well I didn't react like you did, but it wasn't fun. Cheers.
