SEA TRIAL GOES HORRIBLY WRONG! - Episode 156

  • We sail from Shelter Bay Marina in Panama on our hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, and our buddy boat David Shih Sails also comes with us after repairing his broken bulkheads in Linton bay. But one thing leads to another for them, including them getting a fouled propeller, then losing both engines altogether. Definitely not an ideal situation...
    SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

    Just flicked through some comments, those of you asking if this was staged, you may have been watching too much below deck. This is a vlog, and the episode is WAY less dramatic than it actually was in real life, as we can’t film everything that happens when it’s that stressful. And those saying we “ditched” Dave. We were in a fking squall, and Dave said he just had to change his fan belts, which I had previously showed him how to do so knew he could do it, so we just reduced sail and held the course for hours and hours expecting him to catch up as he requested, not knowing he had wrapped a line round his prop and was actually going backwards. Regarding the footage and sound quality, don’t worry, the videographer in charge at the time is no longer with us.

      It was a great episode I would even say one of your better ones, your sailing in a ocean so I can adjust my volume and deal with the sound issues...because it was a intense episode. If your buddy boat was in life threating danger it might have seemed you ditched them but some channels I watch buddy boat no where even near eachother...but just on the same corse around a similar time. so had more time gone by without them arriving you still could have raised the alarm and helped get them help if they had infact needed it. A better way to communicate boat to boat is all I think needs improvement as you will need to be patient teaching them how to sail but that task has put new life into your channel as he was just a subscriber that felt inspired by your channel he is all of us watching and he is a blessing to really reach your subscribers so just keep bring ❤️ ING and patient as you usually are.

      Anyone who thinks this was staged was either not a sailor or has not been watching. Lol. The video quality seemed real for a squall situation, ha! As for ditching Dave? He was in good hands and there was not much you could do with no comms. I wish you had more episodes like this one but you would probably have to stage some. Lol. Couple of things that would be neat is a chart plotter picture of a passage when you’re doing one. With “predict wind” too? How about doing some drills with Dave like man over board etc.
      Thx again Colin.

      This was so not a staged episode!!! I wish I could say it was. I don’t think I realized how terrifying this passage was until watching it happen all over again. Colin and Jamie and the entire crew had our safety as their number one priority. I can’t thank them enough.

    • @aeasthouse316
      @aeasthouse316 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Best thing for Dave was a tough first passage. You can see they were very worried after that sail but it shows he has and is learning. Lots more could have gone wrong, it didn't but they have to just learn from this. Few things to add to your debrief - I don't think there was a proper pre sail briefing with both crews, especially as David is still inexperienced. Discussing communication schedules, loads of "what if scenarios" and how to respond, why no AIS to know where each other is. Both boats should have coordinated watch schedules so that you have an experienced watch on the one boat if you have a rookie on the other. That sort of thing. Daves boat does not look ready to do passage sailing, engines not properly mounted?? No compass, looks like navigation system on phone only, thats just dumb, sorry. Autopilot not working, not enough testing before ocean passage? Did not see any life jackets for the inexperienced, specially night watch on your own! You have to be clipped in and life jacket when its wet and you on your own.

    • @aeasthouse316
      @aeasthouse316 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      as I thought, 17:45 and no chart plotter on - thats just ridiculous. No AIS, no radar, nothing. Getting dark and no life jackets in sight, specially for novice sailors. Have you guys even discussed alternative sail setup for night sailing? Does David and his wife know how to reef? Was there discussions about at what wind speeds you'll reef and is there an alternative reefing strategy with and agains the wind - there should be. David got a false sense of security having had experienced people on board, thats dangerous. And the experience people did not do proper passage planning and briefing. Not good.

    • @aeasthouse316
      @aeasthouse316 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is possible to be a "noob" at sailing but have a healthy attitude to boat preparation and a willingness to learn the basics. This David character seems more interested at pointing a shaky camera at himself than he is at actually up skilling. He is a liability to his family and his whole venture has disaster written all over it, unless he has a very significant shift in mindset.

    Another great episode Colin
    A recommendation for future is to use dual frequency mode on radios when buddy boating.
    That way 16 is always monitored so as not to miss any hails but can still talk on 69.

    • @MarkGovier
      @MarkGovier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It's also an example of why DSC was added to marine VHF. Set up a "group" in the "phonebook" and you can "selectively" call them all or individuals (group call). Most people never read the manual for their radio though... even if engineers try to make their life easier. You can set up so that positions can be polled automatically such as every 1 or five minutes. The radios should ALWAYS be on and monitoring 16 whilst at sea.

    Excellent episode Colin, thanks for showing the raw reality that most would not show.
    You are 100% correct in that we all learn every day, one is never too old or knowledgeable to learn new things.
    One very important lesson that both you and David should have learned (more so David) is to have checklists developed for heading out and also a pm routine schedule documented for the boat. If David does this with the procedures as part of the checklists he will pick it up very quickly and not find himself putting him and his wife and kids in as much risk.
    The basics weren’t done before setting out, simple things like radio check etc, having a pre sail chat where both boat crews can share their knowledge where both boats are on the same page.
    Anyway, important lessons were learned without any dire impact, which is a good outcome.
    Experience doesn’t come overnight as you know and is a continuous learning process.
    🍻👍🇦🇺

    As a person with 4+ decades of sailing experience I say Colin had ever right in the world to be pissed off. The unnecessary stress was avoidable.
    Buddy boats are supposed to stay fairly close together within 2 miles at most) especially when one boat has no nav lights and other mechanical issues going on. Sorry but I blame Jamie 50% because he is the most expedience person in that crew and he should have done more to keep the two vessels closer together.
    PS: Engine mounts likely broke due to the line caught around the prop. Very bad basic seamanship skills failure not to have lines secured properly so that they can never get overboard and around the prop(s) or rudder(s). Yet, if every day was uneventful, we sailors would have few lasting memories.
    Note: Built in hardwired 5 watt VHF radios with a mast top mounted VHF radio antennas usually have a range of near 25 miles, Vs the handheld VHF radio which usually have a much shorter range of near 5 miles.

    Hey Colin, I’m a new sub that has watched your whole catalog to date. I think this was one of my favorite vids bc I love how you keep it real and show us, the viewers, what really happens on the water both good and bad. As a new boater myself, I appreciate your honesty and positivity during the tough times. Keep up the solid content mate !!!

    A little suggestion; when moving around on a boat in a squall, please have your life vests on. Great video. Thanks for sharing.

    Been watching you guys for years now, and watch Dave and his family channel along with many many other sailing/adventure channels. I'm so glad that we got to see other sides of people's abilities and personalities. Dave I was worried about if you were going to stick this out. Just because you have said that when things get hard or if you get bored you venture on to other Hobbes, lifestyles,jobs. Brother the things you all have gone through with the bulk heads during a pandemic would of made most people find that van life. You showed a different side of you and showed us that you might still have a lot to learn but fixing the mounts and props handling the situation as you did tells me your going to be just fine. Jamie fantastic just legend is all that comes to mind. This lifestyle is incredibly hard and testing and I'm glad Dave and the family got to see what there in for. However its rewarded with so much. You guys are living the dream. Dave and family just remember that ya your going to have some tough times but I promise you it's all worth it. Your kids will be so much better off having this in there life. Lessons learned. Fantastic episode. Colin thanks for what you do. I'm sure it feels great seeing Jamie tackling that passage and knowing your mentoring paid off in spades. Good on ya.

      thanks for the vote of confidence! i definitely still have a ton to learn...I definitely know more about bulkheads now than sail, but I'll figure it out! But having Jamie and Colin by my side on the 1st passage...i couldn't asked for a better team. I got way more than i deserved!

    So happy Dave & family are safe. Much MUCH respect to Jamie for just being there with all his awesomeness!
    As hard as it looked, they got through it. They'll all learn from it. What an adventure!

    I hope David learned a lesson here and that is, he still has a long way to go in the sailing/learning department especially if he wants to sail with his family. God Forbid he gets stuck in a similar situation as what played out in today's episode with no Jamie on board! I would say get your feet wet island hoping in the Caribbean first before you try to circumnavigate the globe and most importantly, know your limits.
    Great episode, Colin. You truly are a good friend and although your frustration was apparent, you held your composure really well. I hope that you continue to teach Dave a few things. Tight sails Gents!

    Radios are so important in buddy boat sailing. Always leave them on set at two agreed channels. VHFs are cheap so we can all have more than one.
    We always had a set time of quarter past the even hour to check in, it brings a valuable regimen and a sense of security knowing someone is listening.
    If there is an issue you're no more than two hours behind if by chance someone is not under way and you'll know the approximate location area to go back and search if needed.
    Good lesson for all especially when squalls drop visibility to a few hundred metres or less.
    Great video as always, fair winds and following seas for all.

    I'm so glad to see Jamie back and his expertise is what is needed. Between you Colin and Jamie there is such a bond that no verbal communication is needed. Jamie Thank You for piloting David Shih sails and knowing what to do in the situations that arose during this short test run. Ironing out these needed repairs during these failures on short sails will make David Shih a better captain and also a better sailor knowing what to do when these situations arise in longer journeys. God Bless you all and and safe travels.

      It was insightful that Jamie was already thinking about what he was going to say to Colin -- about the time David went overboard to unfoul the prop. At least he had sense enough to use a rope . . . the strongest swimmer on the planet can only do (briefly) about 2 knots. Doesn't take much of a wind to blow a boat that fast.

    Jamie basically did that whole pass by himself, with sketchy gear and a clueless offsider 😂😂

    VHF radios w AIS between Buddy boats .. also learn simple Morris code signals like SOS and use your long range hand held spotlights for that ..
    if ever I get out of sight w Buddy boat slow down speed for slower boat .. line of sight is vital especially when only linked together with handheld short range radios .. get the best radios you can find . You life may depend on it . Also light a flare on a string and sling it around in a circle ⭕️ , anything to get the other boats attention..
    but maintain a open line of communication with your Buddy boat is vital.
    Jamie has a great deal of experience and great that he went with Dave and family..
    keep the videos coming and I’ll keep watching

    This is why you set up an alternate frequency. Harder to mess it up twice. Attempt contact top of hour on one, attempt second at bottom of the hour. (Or more frequently as desired)

    Heh, batteries are bad. I know that problem ALL TOO WELL! On my Catalina, the previous owner had just installed a bunch of 6v golf cart batteries. They were terrible. I had to replace everything with 12v Renogy's. The worst problem is one that seems fine but rears its head several hours into a sail. Also, Jaime is a legend. The guy saved a family. Seriously.

    You guys need a solid comms setup other than a handheld. Starlink would also be an amazing setup for you. Get an antenna up on that mast for a marine radio. Also create a log that has a designated channel for your handhelds. A HAM setup could also save your lives as well! Awesome adventures.
