    Ryūkyūyamagame (琉球山亀、Geoemyda japonica)
Geoemyda japonicais a terrestrial black-breasted turtle that is only found on Okinawa Island, Tokashiki Island, and Kume Island in the Okinawa Islands. Similar species are known from the southeastern part of mainland China to Vietnam, but they are not distributed in the Nansei Islands or Taiwan. It is designated as a natural monument.
The carapace is 70-150 mm long, and the ground color of the back of the carapace is dark brown with three ridges, each of which has black streaks. The ventral surface is black to dark brown with a yellow rim all over.
It is found in natural forests of evergreen broad-leaved trees and moist forest floors in well-recovered secondary forests, and prefers to live along mountain streams. Even in the same forest, it is rarely seen in dry environments. Field sightings are concentrated from April to September, but detailed ecology and life history are unknown. It is omnivorous and feeds on plant nuts, earthworms, insects, and land snails.
Due to lack of data, the exact number of individuals on each of the three islands where it is distributed is unknown, but in the 1970s and 1980s, there were sightings on the Motobu Peninsula, including southern Nago City and Nakijin Village, on Okinawa Island. However, since the 2000s, it has been limited to the area from the northern part of Nago City to the area north of Ogimi Village, and the distribution range is considered to be clearly shrinking. The main cause of the decline is the shrinkage of habitat due to deforestation and river development, and the fragmentation of habitat due to forest road development and death from falling into gutters are also having a major impact. Furthermore, due to the opening of forest roads on Okinawa Island, natural predators such as mongooses and feral wild dogs and feral cats can easily invade their habitat, posing a major threat to the survival of Geoemyda japonica(Ryūkyūyamagame).
