Funny thing is, even if most creepypasta-type hacks are equally boring and pointless to play/watch, I'm just happy when they actually manage to creep me out somewhat for a few seconds - that timer starting out of nowhere was surprisingly unsettling even though I could already predict it'd end with some spooky demon showing up.
It wasn’t the demon, it was that cheery tune in that desolate landscape with the limited vision that got me
Honestly, the fact that after the timer was up you don't immediately lose but instead have to deal with the anxiety of escaping from some unknown threat that just appeared within the level is what gets me most. Roguelikes that spawn a super-enemy that hunts you down after a certain time spent in a level have that same effect on me.
That thing was just weird enough to be spoopy
When I heard the race starting sound effect I was expecting something to chase him from spawn but that whole part was a good spook. I liked the crusty glitchtrap Mario.

Vinny repeatedly failing to jump the ledge as the static sound in the background gets louder is pure anxiety juice
That's the kind of thing that can genuinely scare me in horror games, no sound, a giant map with nothing in it, just a sound like a screech or static coming closer and closer to you is actually something that makes me panic, I'm like: "Run Run Run Run *I see the thing* RUN RUN RUN RUN AAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"
Every copy of Mario 64 is found in an abandoned Rubber-Caulk-Asbestos factory.
The real fun is figuring out if its a real ghost demon in the game or if its the asbestos filling your lungs

I like the subtle detail of the Bob-omb Battlefield music being ever so slightly slowed down. It adds to the unsettling nature of the empty world

Yes literally someone has to rip the ending music so we can listen to it alone, literally Vinny's is the only footage I can find of the entire thing as others cut it off, and even then it has his commentary

Honestly this is one of the best creepypasta hacks imo. No forced and unnecessary gore and no lame jumpscares. It's reserved in its unsettling elements, and sticks to only stuff that can actually happen in game. No weird demon ghost alternate dimension crap.

The thing that chases you at the end is inspired by the effects of cartridge tilting SM64, and is meant to be an error within the code! It has no thought process and is merely there to take, and take, and take, and take, and take
@@jefftastic Kudos on the entire thing. Your restraint with the creepy aspects make it all the more believable and as such wayyyy more spooky than other video game creepypasta stuff. This romhack is a golden example of "less is more" when it comes to horror.

Imagine if someone made a hack like this but it just alters things like geometry and enemy size/behavior subtly. You try to flip up to a ledge and it's just a bit higher than it should be, or there's some Goombas in a Bowser fight
The slight changes to the way the character controls are would be very anxiety inducing. The "is my controller broken" bit.
People have remade Doom and Mario levels from memory, which might give you the feeling of everything being a little bit off

I'll be honest, this gives me heavy "early-2010s creepypasta game" vibes, just with a lack of immensely horrifying imagery and jumpscares (like what Sonic.exe and the Luna Games brought)
Honestly, the romhacks that are just weird unsettling and slightly tweaked to feel creepy are my favourites, these games that go all out with the bloody imagery and stuff are just boring.

I really like this. Everytime you restart, you notice something is missing or wrong. The timer and cheerful tune starting out of nowhere at the last part made my skin crawl.
I liked this hack a lot actually. It may not be that original, or even very scary, but it's simple and well executed. It makes me nostalgic for the old creepypastas of the early 2010s. And the gimmick of the game changing every time is actually pretty impressive for a Mario 64 ROM hack.
I figured this was pretty short going off the runtime of the video and thought I'd give it a go before spoiling the experience. The race fanfare kicking in and the timer counting down with the lighting going red made me feel dread in a way I haven't felt it in a long time; scared me much more than the bugged Mario zooming my way lol
I think the signs pointing at the flowers is actually pointing at the entity’s spawn point
I played the game myself, The entity actually spawns close to the bridge at the beginning of the level. Have absolutely no clue what the signs next to the flower bed are pointing to

i think it's a visual metaphor to go "under the flowers" as in , buried underneath them like when you're dead
I never understand why the smallest changes to this game is super nerve wracking lol.
For me personally, the discomfort it gave me when I played it blind was having locations I'm very much familiar be similar enough to identify it as Peach's Castle or Bob-omb Battlefield, but changed in substantial ways that drastically alter the mood. Even on the first boot where everything seems the most normal outside the castle, seeing the trees missing along with the stone platform for the 120 star cannon was very early sign that things were gonna go wrong

Just like that Courage The Cowardly Dog supposed canceled Play Station One Game these crashes are intentional for some unknown reason and just like that third Scarecrow Nightmare in Batman Arkham Asylum it’s just supposed to trick The Player into thinking that there is something horribly wrong with The Game. The sound effect before the timer started actually scared me.
This was an alright creepypasta game; however, this was the first creepypasta that freaked me out a bit after watching this playthrough. A short time after watching it I had to go somewhere, and once I stepped outside… the sky was bright white and everything looked faded exactly how it is right here 8:20. That gave me the straight shivers!

i think the kicker for me on this hack is the cold “Everything is better off without you.”, like yeah it’s just a silly hack that someone made, but accompanied with the melancholic music, and the visual of the world returning to its former glory with you, the player nonexistent, it really makes you think if the world would be better off without you after your dozens upon dozens of attempts in making your way through life, and in making your loved ones happy.

I'd like to see it attempted but I have a hunch that the star is either not there or too high to reach given that it was shifted upward on the 2nd-to-last restart.

From the looks of it the game pulled an infinite staircase and simply either teleported mario to a lower point at the slope as he kept turning, or unloaded what was behind him only to reload it in front of him, thus the grabbable ledge can never be reached.

Honestly that was a pretty good normal super mario 64 game developed by nintendo, short and sweet, no jumpscares, the timer was good at building anxiety (especially as there's no immediate difference when it hits 0, other than the warning sign, which was another good touch)

9:09 Levels covered in black fog with no sky are just the most ominous thing. Also the countdown music is just PERFECT with that last note. I don't really know what that sound is called in music, but on my first time watching I was fully expecting a cheap jumpscare at the last second as I heard 10:02.
