Murphy Bed with Cheap $20 Hardware

- How to build a wooden Murphy wall bed with twenty dollar hardware. Save a TON of money by not buying an off the shelf Murphy bed kit for almost $300 and make your own with these simple boat seat swivel bearings.
The wall bed is made from 3/4" red oak PureBond plywood and the design is my own, which you can find plans for below, but is similar to other designs you will see. In total you will need 5 sheets of plywood to complete the bed. I skipped over the shelf build in the video as I would like to make a dedicated video for that later but you will need QTY 3 3/4" sheets and QTY 2 1/4" sheets of plywood to make the additional shelves on either side of the bed.

The quarantine brought me here. I gotta say there’s no way I can build that because I lack all the tools and space to put it together but I enjoyed the video. And the kiddo helping around 🙂
I'm going to find the macguyver version
I bought the plans for a double and queen Murray bed and didn't get them
I’ve built one with a hand saw. Anything is possible.
I want to thank Tyler for answering my question about the depth of outer frame .I built this bed using thong and groove 1x5 knotty pine. This was much cheaper than using plywood because of the pandemic raising the prices of big box lumber. It came out just great a little heavy for folding . I also added 3 in. to the outer shell as suggested by Peter Lowe because my mattress is 17 in. thick I also added a extra 5 in to the top of bed box. When we first folded it shut the open the mattress stuck nothing a strap did not fix you just have to take strap off before sleeping. It only took me a week to build thanks to the great plans and some helpful hints. Also my wife helped and her help was greatly appreciated!
I am so impressed with your young assistant: he will ask for a bigger paycheck at the end of this project! I look at him and remembered my son when he was his age. Now he is graduating from engineering at Penn State U. Thanks for this awesome video. A real inspiration for many.
I love that your son was working right along with you. Looks like he just loves to be around Dad!
Great build. I loved how your little assistant was so helpful. It's hard to get grown folks to do this kinda work nowadays. Great parenting, keep it up.
you could probably just drill 4 holes through each mounting plate and screw them in, no need for bolts. 8 screws can hold a lot of combined weight. I've seen other people add in gas struts for car boots and other mechanisms to offset the bed weight. Looks like an easy enough addition to your project. Great job.
Great project. Keep the younger helper engaged!!! It's the same way I learned
the little helper made this vid awesome. look at him vacuuming.
You are so talented in woodworking and instructing. I could never build anything like this, but it was interesting and fun to watch and I came away with a couple of clever tips, namely mixing stain with topcoat and removing excess glue with a straw. Thanks for this very nicely done video!
Can you include where you put the screws, etc in the plans? It isn’t very beginner friendly. I have to watch the video over and over to see exactly how you did everything. It be nice to see that on the plans that I purchased
Bought the plans for Full and Queen. Just finished the Full and it’s a breeze. Thanks
The STAR handles the Efficient Clean-up Shop Vac! 🏆
Hey, Tyler. I thought the shelves were overkill or unnecessary until I realized you built them to serve as the legs when the bed is down. Nice design and great solution.
+Mike Dixon Nice and sturdy this way. Thanks for watching!
Just what I'm looking for....thanks Tyler beautiful craftsmanship!!!
Really Nice. I'm a carpenter too. I have not really ever done furniture work but would have liked too. Don't know if I ever will ? You are Lucky you have a workshop. Good Luck
Nice job..My first table saw was a circular saw bolted from underneath. Now THAT made me nervous. :)
The little "mistake" didn't even show in the end, came out awesome..
+Path in AZ That would be terrifying! Thanks for watching!
They call that the suicide saw for a reason.
Nice job. I agree that's a nice quick finish. The little Tyler sunglasses. 👍
Nice. I like the style, the efficiency of it all. We're building a Net Zero house (smaller) starting in a few months, by November I'll need someone to do all the built--ins, cabinetry and there are a bunch of windows to build. (44) I couldn't afford you but your style is what I'm looking for.
Remove the mounting screws for the pivots and add a washer between pivot and wood, then screw them back in.
If the unit will be used every day you might want to use threaded inserts to mount the lazy Susan hardware
Man you have one of the coolest and cleanest shops i have eve seen. Major Envy :)
Your little boy totally makes the video. I'll be buying these plans. thanks
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought to myself, What a good finish. Haha you had the little guy help you. Nice video.
Great project brother, and you have a cute helper there who likes to look cool 😎 when he works.
Cool bed ... but the part that got me the most was you having your son there in the shop with you ... when I was a stay at home dad I always my kids around to reach them what I do.... this was before my ex stole our kids and moved in with another guy... in another state ... so far it's been 15 months and not so much as a phone call from my kids at all. I miss my kids ... anyways this is a cool build ...thanks
Nice work, and nice explanations. thanks for sharing!
Love the shelf design for the legs! Great idea!
Hey, lets see what your little boy is making! Love it!
Great build! Watch out for those long sleeves on the table saw 8-0
Nice job. It's a relatively simple build, but looks really good. Thanks for the vid.
Are you able to close this with a completely made bed with pillows? That is the only flaw I can see. This is beautiful, practical, and very functional piece otherwise. Your son is adorable. Nice parenting. :) Thanks for the video.
Interesting idea. not sure about the worthless shelves. I'd probably just go with the one for the support.
You can sleep on your design on your own.
THIS was, what I was looking for 😁
Thanks 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the 'alternative' mechanism. I love it!
The little assistant is adorable
I would rather have pneumatics in a murphy bed due to safety but this was a great tutorial for those on a budget. Thanks!.
I like the looks of the bed, however I need a fold out desk area as well. And hidden storage areas.
I love your little slave doing chores! LOL So cute! :)
Fantastic workshop.
I would have made a shallow cabinet to put stuff inside instead of floating shelves. I'm a lazy guy. I'd hate to have to take stuff off the shelves to use the bed. Great video.
Very nice build and what a great finishing..?
+Stamatis T Thanks man, super pleased with the finish!
Jesus Saves ! Great job guys !
Looks great and seems to work great as well!
I'm planning to build a Murphys bed and your video is an awesome inspiration. Just have two questions, that I hope you can help me with.
1: Did the Swivel Brackets hold the weight? Because the Swivel Brackets are supposed to be mounted horizontal (flat)
2: Would you have done anything different?
Best regards
This is what i want to know. I have a feeling they will eventually break
I’m getting my own place, and would like to make a Murphy Bed for each room.
I'm planning to build a hybrid between a Storage bed & a Murphy bed with an inline couch...
Loved seeing your pint-size helper using the vacuum while dad drilled holes in the side boards. Teach 'em early and they'll have good work habits for a lifetime. And wonderful memories of helping daddy.
That's so funny. I had the same exact idea using boat seat swivels...
Congrats my friend. Thats a great job.
Awesome job Tyler! 👍👊
+Fred McIntyre Thanks Fred!
Very cool. Great explanation and video overall.
Thank you!
In your opinion, would a set of, let's say 11 magnets, to hold the head of the bed in place instead of the bolt, work? I've been thinking about this possibility, but I'm not sure if this way would make the bed a little harder to pull down and therefore wear the shelves out... Awesome video!!!! Thank you so much!!! :D
Nice shop dude!
An easy design and excellent job, but would like to know the weight of the bed i.e. base and mattress?
Great build! Thanks!
What a great project! Thanks for sharing
Very nice
Will this work for a twin bunk bed? It won't be that big, just needs to hold 200 lbs.
next time i would put the L brakets on top of the closet. so you never see them... the closet is high enough to hide them that way... otherwise a very nice build!!!
Hi I just wanted to know if the wood glue is necessary I want to be able to separate when I move. I also don’t have the pocket screw can I use just regular screw I know they will show but I don’t mind
It's a very nice idea. I like it but I don't see the purpose of the shelves when you're going to pull it down for the night...
Tank you. Exelent tutorials.
Cool build.
Does it squeak at all?
Beautiful!
I'm organising materials to make this, but on the plans materials list it just says 3/4" thick solid oak which is then cut down for the cabinet edging. Anyone know the actual dimensions of the solid oak edging we apply? So far this is my only questions after the video and plans, well done :) Also has anyone added a fold down desk?
Great video! How thick does the outer frame have to be in order to support the weight of the bed when stored vertically?
What a great concept and video, awesome work! How much would you guess the bed weighs? Is it worth adding pistons for a lift assist?
train your biceps curls
Nice build! I love your Little Assistant :) Subscribed.
Excelente trabajo
I just bought your plans but I have a few questions...as to the floating shelves in the plans it says 2x4 material (only in the diagram, not the shopping list) but in the video, it says you use 2x 6? It seems like the shopping list isn't super complete how much 2x4 or 2x6 should I need? I think just an 8 foot board? Also, it says 3/4 solid oak but no measurement of how much I need and where exactly that goes. I could tell in the video where you put it but I thought it interfered with the brackets and it would be changed in the plans?
The supervisor/inspector is sporting Safety Chic....all the rage you know.
Omg I need this because the legs to my daughter's bed broke and her bed is sloping. I need 9 inches to make it even with the bed attached to the frame
Hello, Who is that mini hero working with you?
Marvelous!!
Great quality work!.. just subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
excellent. thank you
Just downloaded your plans then realized I needed to use a single mattress. And I will turn the whole frame sideways as my room is configured where pulling down long way wont fit. Do you have plans for a single size frame? My husband seems to think we can modify without any problems. I'm more of a plan person myself.
In the PDF it says 3/4 thick solid oak.... But don't say how much is needed.... Also on the legs/shelves it says 2×4 material but that isn't listed on material list? Please help. Just bought plans.
Do you have plans for a single bed version or would I just need to adjust sizes according to the size of the mattress being used? Thanks
I love it
Excellent
will you do a horizontal bunk bed one?
I have a question/request. I would love a murphy bed in my extra bedroom for guests, however, I need space as well. I like when furniture can serve two functions. I would like the sliding shelf doors in front of the murphy bed, so I can store DVDs. The DVD rack would slide to the sides to reveal and pull down the murphy bed. There would be shelves/cabinet/nightstand on each side of the murphy in which the DVD rack would slide in front of. Do you know or could to create plans to make something like this? Thank you!
i need something like this
Maybe a safety chain somewhere to be certain you don't drop it on an unseen little one.
Good stuff!
I check Amazon for the hardware item is not in stock do you know were else they sell the same set up
I love this! Do you have plans for a queen size bed?
Hey Tyler do you ever have trouble with the 2x4s twisting after ripping and or cutting them? Seems to happen to me all the time... Would love to hear your tips! I plan to start on this project tomorrow. I just bought the plans this evening
What thicknes is the wood that holds the mattress (the frame around the mattress)? I have wood from tearing out a deck last summer...
Good Morning!
Do you have the measurements
Could these plans be applied to a twin size bed?
any recommendation where to put gas pistons? and how much force? thanks. just bought the plan for full size and planning to make then in following days
Beğenerek izledim ve like attım :)
hi tyler... i just bought your plans... i have a question about the shelves/legs... do you think that it is it necessary for support for them the be that thick... or can i make them around 2" thick
Hi Tyler, Great build. Did you add any more coats of finish after the stain/finish mix first coat? or was the one coat enough?
I sprayed two coats with the tint and a third clear coat over the top.
How much of a gap did you leave for on top and bottom to close the bed?
Do you have a set of plans that would include having a drop down table when the bed is in the cabinet?
I do not, sorry.
Wouldn't round swivel plates work better?
Hi Tyler. Does it matter if I use CRX boards instead of Red Oak?
Hey Tyler, really excellent video. Just wanted to clarify...your blend is 95% top coat and 5% stain? And does this ratio work with various coats/stains? Thank you.
I believe I mixed at 5% but with general finishes you can pix up to about 15%. You have to have a water based stain or due with a water based topcoat. Oils will not work.
@@DIYTyler is it safe to say if I mix up to 15% the darker the stain will be? I am wanting a nice dark Espresso.
