I love the simplicity of this. I'm going to use this for the spare room in our Airbnb. One word of advice though...I didn't see you using safety glasses during your construction, drilling, cutting, etc. This video was from three years ago, and so hopefully you're using them now. Listen to the voice of experience when I say that all it takes is a split second for a power tool to throw something straight into your eye and you lose the eye. PLEASE wear safety glasses when you use power tools of any kind! Great job with the bed, too!!! Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you so much this is actually a very attainable plan without needing a bunch of crazy Murphy bed hardware... I might actually use this I might actually use this this is awesome I've got to get moved into my apartment 1st but I think I want to turn my bed into a go away during the day bed
absolutely. the main difference is the added weight of the 3/4" ply. I have had my bed in 4 different locations, moved across Canada with it and reinstalled it multiple times. there have been well over 1000nights slept in it without issue. you can do it, but I don't think it is necessary. send me a message through the website, I'm happy to discuss further
Hi, Im in the UK, Is it possible to build this bed with a UK Double mattress size, As you know, the UK mattress sizes are different to US matrress sizes sadly I think I may just be able to manage this project, I have the tools, so thats a good start right ?

(Twin size bed) - can i make the depth of the desk a bit smaller? 16 to 18 instead of 20? - how much could it cost me to make the twin murphy bed? ( i live in canada) - also how much time to make the twin bed? - if you can , can you make a video on how to make it since im more visual and the twin is different than the one in this video. the twin will be very similar to build. all the parts are the same, just some are smaller. changing the depth of the desk causes some cascading issues. changing the depth, changes the balance point. best to leave the depth alone. you could make a radius cut into the center of the desk to give you more space. feel free to reach out on the website if you want to discuss further.
This is probably one of the most straightforward Murphy bed desk tutorials available... One question though- how easy would it be to modify the design so that the bed is vertical?

@@kutakkatikalfatih6858 Got ya. There isn't actually a mechanism. The bed pivots on a metal pipe and the counterweights offset some of the weight of the bed. All parts are easily found in ANY hardware/lumber store.
I want to do similat however make it so when the bed is up, there is a bench that does similar to the shelf of this one, but also a table swings down on an arm so to speak wth legs that fold out to stabilize it but act as smaller floating like shelves when bed is up ....😅 Confused myself lol

Can you make a free standing Murphy bed without the desk? Or does the desk act as counter weight yo keep it from toppling over? I want to build a free standing Murphy bed with a standing desk surface on the top
the standing desk idea is doable. but you wouldn't want it on the top of the bed, it would be too tall to use. I think most standing desks a re between 36 and 40 inches, the bed is about 5 ft high... you could modify the desk to be higher if you'd like.

Hi, I just downloaded the plans for this awesome bed. I have two questions, 1. Can I build it with MDF instead of 1/2 Ply? I'm going to paint it all anyway. 2. Can I extend one end of the bed to provide some degree of a headboard that prevents pillows from falling off? I estimate that I can make it almost 16 inches tall, and would have to curve the ends so that it didn't hit the wall.
Hey Mark, thanks for the support! The plywood is important for the structure of the bed, and it MUCH lighter than MDF. for these 2 reasons, you should not use MDF. You can make the headboard, but you will need to taper the outside corner to allow the bed to fold up. I'm excited to see what you come up with! Great work, I'm very impressed. Murphy beds are the best option (and even more so with a desk) for some of these little shoe-box sized apartments.. I've even seen some with an attached sofa.

@@TheHowtoDad whenever I cut plywood. The edged blow out and chip. I want to have the edges of the wood exposed. I've seen it before... Can look really nice if treated. But, I get chipped vaneer on the sides :(
@@doms6741 gotcha! First make sure you've got a good blade. You may need a new one, more teeth the better. If your using a circular saw, cut the plywood with the good side down. On a table saw, good side up and use a zero clearance guard if you can (min 60tooth blade 80 is better), Another tip, try using BLUE painters tape on the cut. Put the tape along the cut and press it firmly in place (both side of the ply of you want) Your best option is buy a good, new blade.

I’m trying to hire a professional to make one for me. He has the plans but is having a hard time with an estimate. How many hours would this build take for an experienced woodworker?
I would say about 8 hours not including finishing. honestly, once you get into it it's a pretty simple build. if they are experienced, they should have no trouble
I like the design. You really need to work on your audio levels though. Your voice was too quite and when I turned the volume up to hear what you were saying when the music comes back it is massively to loud.
Quick question. How deep of a mattress does this allow for? Mine is 11 inches deep. Would these plans accommodate that ? I’ve looked at lots of these videos and yours is the best I’ve seen. Thanks for all your work to provide this. It’s really appreciated.
I had to stop the video about 1/4 of the way through. You really need to learn to balance the volume of the music and your voice. A better choice of music wouldn't hurt either. OR, just don't use music at all. Thumbs down, my friend. THUMBS DOWN!

I am working on vertical plans. A few vertical queens have been built already. Lifting springs are required for the vertical orientation.

What is the thickness of the plywood for the base of the bed?
all the plywood is specd at 1/2" (12mm). the under the matress plywood could be 3/8" if glued and screwed properly to the structure of the bed

I had to stop the video about 1/4 of the way through. You really need to learn to balance the volume of the music and your voice. A better choice of music wouldn't hurt either. OR, just don't use music at all. Thumbs down, my friend. THUMBS DOWN!

Personally, I do prefer videos with more subdued or even absent music, but I know it’s hard to find a balance that works for the majority of viewers.
