    Great job with the bed!
    One thought i had for someone else attempthing this build: @ 3:47 when you were worried about lining the hinges up correctly, you could have actually drilled those holes before assembling the frame. Take the two end boards, gang them together and drill the holes completely through both boards at once like you did when you were lining up the holes for the nightstand. That way you have exactly the same positioning without having to measure at all. As Chris Schwarz said on the Woodwright's Shop "Measurement is the enemy of accuracy..."

    Lol... I had just watched Glenn's build on my pc before dinner. I wanted to show my wife, so I went to look it up on my phone so I could cast it to our TV downstairs. I came across yours instead. I think between your video and Glenn's, I should have enough info to attempt this project. We've been wanting to do a murphy bed for some time, and I think these two videos are the best I've seen, and I've been looking around quite a bit!

    Nice job! Pro Tip: When you're cutting through a board, don't support it on both sides of the cut. (1:27)
    The board will flex, pinching the blade. This causes burning of your stock and increases the likelihood of a kickback. For better and safer results, let the piece you're cutting off fall to the floor.

    • @donmiller4501
      @donmiller4501 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @themonkeydrunken Was wondering how you protect from the weight of the board cracking off before you get to the end of the cut if you don't support both sides.

    • @themonkeydrunken
      @themonkeydrunken 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good question. If the piece is narrow enough to go on the miter saw, that's ideal. But if it's too wide, or the miter saw isn't handy, I'll usually hold that piece with my left hand while operating the saw with my right. (Make sure no fingers are in the path of the saw! Your hand should be about a foot away from the blade.)
      Holding it by hand allows you to support it just right - not too high so it binds, not to low so it cracks off. Really just taking a bit of the weight out of the equation. Practice on a couple of scrap boards, and I bet you'll get a feel for it right away.

      I have height adjustable stands with a "L" that leans away a bit that the wood falls onto. Best way is to get the long side of the "L" (which is horizontal) level with the surface your stock is being clamped to, then it just kind of tips out. I am thinking of making this a permanent, fixed part of the bench but I have the stands and I a lazy ass.

    • @baconneggs2406
      @baconneggs2406 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@themonkeydrunken does the miter saw not support the wood on both sides?

    • @themonkeydrunken
      @themonkeydrunken 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brad R, you're right, a miter saw does support both sides, but it works out because the board can't flex and pinch the blade.

    Hey Justin, nice build on the Murphy bed i also watched that video of Glens a while ago ad liked the build i have a couple of tip fo you too i was a professional Woodworker for over 20 years as well as it being a passion and my hobby so i saw a couple of things that i thought will make you life easier and perhaps safer if you built yourself 2 plywood boxes simple pocket screw construction to hold your mitre saw and table saw off the floor you can stand and use them instead of kneeling or leaning over them on the floor that not only makes it. Easier on your back but it gives you a way better position to “site” your cuts and or move out of the way for a kickback or some other harmful possibility it also keeps your face and mostly eyes in a much safer position one other thing that you would be amazed at is to replace your air hose with a silicone one from Home Depot. Or Amazon so that you aren’t constantly fighting the springing Of the coil hose those are excellent in the right application but. You will find its so much better having just a plain hose get one like a 50 footer and you could trim out a house or whatever without. Needing to move the compressor so much plus ive seen guys put so. Much tension on the coil ones they get the nail gun flying out of their hands oh and be extra careful when having the lumberyard or box store cutting your material because their saws are very often badly calibrated and /or the person doing the cutting just doesn’t give a crap i know we use the service to make it easier to haul or recut when we get it to our shop etc if you want to get fancy on your saw cabinets you could add doors and drawers and even add lockable casters to move them around ? The height is really up to whatever you feel comfortable and safe at 34 inches off the floor is a standard countertop height that the majority of kitchen counters and work stations are usually set at overall i was pretty impressed with your build most guys using pocket. Screw construction mess up a couple of parts in the first few builds or simply forget a side you look like you have a natural talent on seeing the project thru all of the steps one more tid bit is Woodworking i general is all about repetitive joinery and construction if you take the time to analyze your completed project and figure out what you can do the next time to possibly correct them or minimize at least you wi progress very quickly dont bash yourself and keep in mind you should be doing it as a hobby for enjoyment because you Ike it not very many people can sa they. Slept in a bed that they knew who built it so thats kind of cool I slept and my children slept in beds i made for all of us my son had a set of bunk beds that the top bunk had a electric garage door opener attached to it to open and close mine had enough storage under it to hide and store all my Holiday decorations And a 12 gauge shotgun ! That most people didnt realize was there but i could easily access my next design has hand gun storage !

    Have to admit you did a great job and did it without any expensive tools and made it on a budget. The only thing I would do different is to put 2 supports or a longer piece to support the side that you cut that falls off. This prevents the wood cutoff piece from scarring when it falls off so you can save for another project possibly. Love the blooper clips. I usually measure 3 times and cut once. lol Other than that nice job!

    Many are asking the cost of something like this. Just looking up the cost of 3/4 sanded plywood at HD - $35 a sheet. That's plain pine. If you want the premium 3/4 with maple or oak finish ply, then the price jumps to $53. So maybe three sheets of the good stuff and two sheets of regular for the bottom and places you don't need the primo finish adds up to around $250. The you need the solid wood facing, hardware, and finishing products (stain, conditioner, sandpaper, etc.). Total cost will vary according to design and materials used, but figure at least $350 - $450 on up. That would be my rough guess.

    I just found your video this morning and instantly knew I wanted to watch!!! Thank you for the amazing job you accomplished in putting this video together! You so a very excellent job of narrating, giving appropriate info and instruction at right spots and the camera is placed well so we can understand easily what you are doing! I realize there is experience in all of that but still, I know praise is few and far between, people get too busy and somtimes forget so job very very well done!!!
    That is one very very well built piece of furniture that from the looks of it, one that will last you a life time and can even pass down through many generations if well maintained and moved if need be from one home to another if there is a move practically in the same way one would any other bed so, YES Sir make sure you move that with you should you move!!!! The reason I am pointing this out is because you made that with plywood which means you basically negate the risk of damage and or it disintegrating practically before your eyes just in if it were to get wet!!! That is one of the biggest problems the elite have created for us to keep their capitalist market going to keep us all in this enslaved do all of the work and barely get by while we sit on the hill tell you what to do and watch and take all of the profit from all of your hard labor!!! Amazing!! They have encouraged upgrading in with the new and out with the old crap!!! And thus out goes the well built furniture to buy the new styles of furniture so one can keep up with the times, stay in fashion, etc., etc., etc...and in the process we end up with crap peices of furniture that bubble up, bow out, warp and even just fall literally all apart almost before your eyse into a little pile of saw dust, because that is furniture now as well as most cabnetry and once it absorbs much water at all it is at minimum lumpy. And then instead of upgrading or keeping up one is actually having to throw out and replace/repair!!! And thus we NEED money and thus they keep us in this viscious cycle of needing money to buy and thus they have us and we must work usually for them even self employed one works more than even GOD entended!!!
    The rest is off subject but a way to fix the world if enough of us demand change!!!
    We are only supposed to have to labor to obtain food, erect a shelter and furniture, create clothing and care for one another! That is not supposed to mean 40 + hours a week and barely making it paycheck to paycheck! But we do so for the furniture reason but also all of the hype they have created and made holidays more elaborate and involved every year! They even put the stuff out months in advance to entice extra buying of unneeded, unnecessary things! A holiday to say i love you, independance day, memorial day, veterans day...a good one we should not even have because we should have never been at war which the elite also continually force so money is spent and circulated and for population control! If the men can cease fire on Christmas day and meet in the middle of a cold field and shake hands and share food and stories of families, friends and fiances waiting for them back home, for 24 hours, that tells you if not for the mad men calling the shots 95% of the time being directed via the pope, the queen, the president and a few others says and tells us who must be exiled or hung, how our systems need to be changed and how to make every man woman and child truly free, and truly taken care of day in and day out and never be left out in the cold again!!! Anyway they have given open subliminal messaging that we should buy and decorate and celebrate by spending more and on and on keepping us buying, buying, buying, making their system appear to work, whereas they villanize socialism to keep us away from it because then jthey are no longer in control! Not true socialism which would be like living as native americans have all of their lives!! Everyone who can work does work and everything goes together for the benifit of all! If you slack you miss out!!! Not much slacking after one eats bread and water if they even get that.!!
    Trump is doing an excellent job, but what if, we all had a home and the utilities were always on, either because it was delivered as it is now or independantly at each dwelling and or just globally similar to how Tesla said it could be done! Everyone were able to do water catchment and or well water, even cable and what not but here wouod be the thing! We only perform the jobs that are essential, no more digging for stuff we do not need! Put everyone to work who can in making everyone a home, making clothing, making cookware growing food, etc. And then everything is shared everwhere much as it is now but because everyone does their part no one needs money and no onoe works the long hours. Even if everything were the same as now, but no new jobs, just put everyone who can work alongside another person who already has a job and train them to do that job as well! I know world wide there is at minimum one more person not working for everyone who is, so if they work those peoples jobs as well then that would mean only working half the time! But they will not do that because, that means either paycut for the original worker and they basically split the wage...nope!!! Other choice is pay them both the same amount as in a 40 hour pay but then the business doubles how much they pay employees, nope again! So, do away with money everyone works what is needed and have everything that is available! If someone refuses to work, ie"pitch in" then they can have bread and water until they decide they will work or they can go live outside of society on complete self!

    Hey man, a little safety tip, NEVER cut in between saw horses (or anything you're using to take their place). When you cut in between two supports, the cuts start bending downwards, which will pinch the blade, possibly causing you or your surrounding helpers serious harm that could end fatally.
    Remember, cut outside the supports, not inside.

      @Elispicion 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bro, I did that a few times and the blade did pinch, but it thought, "Meh, what's the worse that could happen?".
      Still, thanks for the warning, I won't do it again.

    Very nice! It was good to see a whole project using pocket screws. I’ve not yet made the investment in the jigs, though I have watched several of the Kreg videos. I was taught old-school methods by my dad and spent a lot of time doing dowel joinery. I do have a small biscuit joiner, but haven’t used it much. It just doesn’t seem as sturdy as dowelled and glued construction.
