- This time I make a Murphy bed with a stay level desk! The desk turns the room into a true multifunction space, and with the stay level feature I don't have to clear it off before pulling the bed down. I also flanked the bed with cabinets and shelves for lots of storage!

@@YouCanMakeThisToo Built this recently and haven't figure out how to get the stay-level bars to work right. It seems to require a shorter length when it's down than when it's up. Any chance you can share the math on that, or what your measurements were?
@@jaredh4183 I've been doing some brainstorming, and I think I figured it out. The relationship between the shelf hinge and the shelf's bar mounting point needs to be the same as the relationship between the bed hinge and the cabinet's bar mounting point. So, if you mount the bar to the shelf 10 inches down and 8 inches in front of the shelf hinge, then you need to mount the other end of the bar to the bed cabinet 10 inches down and 8 inches in front of the bed hinge.
To visualize why, imagine the arc drawn in the air by the shelf hinge as the bed opens and closes. It's essentially a circle centered around the bed hinge. For the shelf to remain level, the shelf's bar mounting point needs to draw the same arc, so it'll be the same size circle, but the edge is on the shelf's bar mounting point, which is "shifted" down and forward of the shelf hinge, so the center of that circle (i.e.: the cabinet's bar mounting point) is shifted down and forward by the same amount.
@@ReverendTed Thanks for the response! Your way makes more sense, but here's my solution in case anyone is interested. To figure it out, I ended up getting mathematical. There are basically two different graphs we need to use. One in the up position, and one in the down position. I call the bar that goes from the desk to the base of the bed the radius, and I treat it like a circle, where the centerpoint of the circle is where the support connects to the side of the desk.
This will make way more sense if you graph these out. I used www.geogebra.org/graphing?lang=en
The first equation is when the bed is up, desk is in use.
(x - [length parallel to floor from where the bed pivots to screw in desk])^2 + (y - [height from bed pivot to screw in desk])^2 = [length of support]^2
Second equation is the same, but when the bed is down/in use. My initial situation was a problem. My two equations were:
(x-19)^(2)+(y-30)^(2)=39^(2)
(x-39)^(2)+(y-0.5)^(2)=39^(2)
Where the two circles intersect is where the bottom support needs to be anchored for the desk to stay level while the bed descends. Just like you pointed out they need to draw the same arc. Graphing mine, you will see that how it was originally situated, there was no solution unless it was anchored about 4" below the floor. I used the graphs to change my support length, desk height, and how far out it was anchored on the desk until I found something that worked. It was a lot easier on a graphing calculator than it would have been to keep cutting lengths and drilling holes. Sadly, I did not save the equations I finished with, but hopefully this helps people. I may update this post later when I have the opportunity to measure again.
Your way really sounds like we used the same concept, but I had to see it on paper before it clicked in my head.

@@ReverendTed Final graphs that worked, using the formula in the previous comment were:
(x-9)^(2)+(y-30)^(2)=29^(2) for desk up
(x-29)^(2)+(y-0.5)^(2)=29^(2) for bed down. So I shortened the bar to 29" (30, but 29 from screw to screw) and moved it to only be 9" out from the bed when it's in the up position. The bottom screw ended up 2.5" above the pivot of the bed.
Hopefully this helps others solve.
The math for a stay level desk is actually very simple once I drew it out and tested everything. I'll identify four "swivel points":
1- Bed Swivel
2- Desk to Bed Swivel
3- Frame to Brace Swivel
4- Desk to Brace Swivel
I think these are pretty self explanatory. Anyways, whatever the *horizontal* and *vertical* distance is between the swivels 1 & 2 is, the horizontal and vertical distances between 3 & 4 should be the exact same. If you "connect the dots", you'll find that they form a parallelogram where you can fix two points, and move two points, and keep the distances equal

That's a great take on the stay-level desk concept! A piano hinge on the back upper edge, and pressurized struts to keep it level through its arc. The DeskBed design has the desk hanging from brackets, without struts (just struts on the bed to help lift it), and I thought about trying to reverse engineer that without plans, but it seemed a bit advanced. This seems much simpler, but it depends on those struts not failing. Still, I may give this one a go at some point. Thanks for sharing!
The desk doesn't use pressurized struts. It's a rigid bar affixed to the shelf and the cabinet. Any struts here are part of the Murphy bed mechanism itself (and even then I think this one might be springs only?)

Hi Patrick - I am also looking t build one and have worked this out as follows - with the bed in the upright position and the leveling arm hanging scribe an arc on the frame around the bed - then with the bed in the down position use the leveling arm to scribe another arc to intersect the first one this would then be the piviot point for the leveling arm

I’ve watched this video about 20 times because I recently bought the Murphy bed kit and I’m wondering as to how you make the stay level desk and also a quick guide for the cabinets! If I could get more info on that I’d appreciate it! I want my build to be as great as yours!
Thanks! I haven’t done details on the desk, but it’s in my list because so many people have asked. As far as the cabinets.. I don’t have plans but they are dead simple. Do a google image search for cabinet construction and you should get a diagram if my walk through isn’t helping. Then just size your pieces to whatever dimensions you want.
YouCanMakeThisToo I’ll do a search on google for the cabinets! I know you used 4 feet piano hinge for the desk, but for the sides did you just use metal rods?
Yeah, the sides are just 1” flat bar from a home improvement warehouse. Nothing fancy. One of these days I’ll spend some hours messing with it and find the right position.

It looks pretty good. I have very limited space, basically an 8' x 10' room and only 66 inches of space behind the door on the only available wall with out windows or closet doors. Can this be assembled off sit and then installed on site?
Sort of, it won't fit through a door but the way I did it may work for you. Prepare and assembly what you can offsite then put that together in the room.

I'd say someone real handy could do the whole thing in two weekends. Not sure it'd be much faster the second time for me because it's still a lot of instruction checking. It's hard for me to give times, because recording a build makes it take like 3x longer. Always hard to judge how long something would take if my mind was just in making the thing, and not making a video.

Just some regular off the shelf stuff, nothing special. I painted it once all the pieces were done, but before assembling them in the room

it doesn't.. I cobbled it together and it only works so so. Apparently the folks I found don't sell them anymore.

There used to be. Not anymore unfortunately. I just used some steel bars and kept adjusting until it worked well enough
What'd you figure out about the stay-level geometry? My hunch is that two pivot points need to be in the horizontal plane. I've been trying to figure it out on the whiteboard for days now.
I just kept repositioning the screws until it worked well enough

My gut feeling is you need to match the relationship between the desk hinge and the desk pivot mount to the relationship between the main bed hinge and the frame pivot mount, though I may be mistaken. That is, if the desk pivot mount is 8 inches down and 10 inches forward from the desk hinge, then the frame pivot mount will need to be 8 inches down and 10 inches forward from the bed hinge. Again, I'm not sure this is actually correct, but the more I think about it the more convinced I am that this is correct.
Alternatively (as I'm brainstorming): the frame pivot mount should be the same distance from the floor as the desk pivot mount (when the bed is lowered) AND they should be the same distance apart as the bed hinge is from the desk hinge. That said, I know for a fact that based on other videos I've seen that this is possible without the two pivots being the same distance from the floor.
_Edit: I did some more thinking, and it's the first one, I'm nearly positive. Imagine the arc drawn by the shelf hinge as the bed opens and closes - it's essentially a circle centered around the bed hinge. Now picture the shelf moving level with it at the same time - specifically the point where you mount the stay-level bar to the shelf. It helped me to hold a pair of fingers up in that orientation and watch as I moved, but what I noticed is that in order to stay level, the bar mounting point on the shelf must make the same circle, just shifted down and forward based on how far that mounting point is from the shelf hinge. So...wherever you attach the stay-level bar to the shelf relative to the shelf hinge, the cabinet mounting point for the stay-level bar must be in that same relative orientation to the bed hinge_ .
Great video!! I want to use only 6 inch mattress, can this be made a little shallow e.g. 7 inch depth so it will not take too much space when folded?
Probably, but it might throw off the pivot points and stuff.

@@YouCanMakeThisToo I have ideas, and they are simple enough, but somewhat clunky... basically, they involve a hinged swinging shelf that becomes an additional bed support when the bed is down. the parts that still puzzle me are: would the shelves need to be weighted on the bottom to help them be stable? and/or: does some kind of pivot system with bearings exist, to stabililise the swinging motion?
I saw another video from WWBeds Custom Furniture about a stay-level vanity Murphy bed that used a slightly different connector to rotate the shelf (though the physics is the same) - it was a rectangular piece of metal (which was nice because it was a little less visible than the diagonal strap). When watching that one in action, I didn't see any reason you couldn't simply add another leg to it for another shelf higher up. In fact, my gut feeling that the frame pivot point TCMT2 used for this desk could be used for a second shelf, as long as the shelf had the same functional dimensions - specifically the relationship of the shelf hinge to the shelf pivot point that the desk has. (E.g.: The previous shelf pivot is mounted 6 inches down and 7 inches forward from the shelf hinge, or whatever.)
More brainstorming - I think the reason you don't see them with multiple shelves is probably that the more shelving you add and the further (higher up) it is from the bed hinge, the heavier and more complicated to balance\calibrate the whole apparatus becomes. Maybe?
I just made this same project before Thanksgiving. I made my side pieces too long . . . (&&#$!!) AND I had to work alone too (except for your munchkin I had an elf (wife)). Not easy but can be done. Nice job!
Ah man! Mistakes can be a real pain. Working alone is tough, but definitely possible! Working on some bunk beds solo now.
How many hours did it take, including painting? And what was the cost?

I don't, recording everything would screw up any time logs and trying to account for the difference would only take... more time. And I'm already slow enough to get projects out with all the designing, filming, editing, writing..

If you look up more diy murphy bed ideas, you'll find plenty that don't use this kit. Some people use conduit for the hinges and some use boat seat swivels. Some videos also offer their version of templates. I'm opting to go that route because the kit is way too expensive in my opinion. Sorry I couldn't exactly point you in a direction. I'm just taking bits and pieces from videos that I like. Hopefully it all comes together well. It'll be a good challenge. Have fun!

Me and the hubby are thinking about making a Murphy Bed, and have no idea where to start. XD But you're video looks like something we want to do! I'm a digital freelance artist, and so is he in his off time. So having a small desk built into the bed frame would really work out for him since he's always just sitting on the bed. How long do you think it took you to make this entire murphy bed?
It could probably be done in a weekend or two. I can never know for sure because the camera slows me down so much.

Screw the desk arm into side and mark where it is up, then mark where it is down. Try the middle, it'll be wrong. Then keep trying. There won't be a right spot. Estimate how you need to the move the one side you did screw, and start over. Eventually you'll get close enough.

I was looking for a diy self leveling desk for a murphy bed and I though your was the easiest until I actually put the desk together and well the piano hinge doesn't really do the job it does look great it just doesn't do the self leveling adjustment like it doesn't level out as the bed is coming dow down

OK you have a stay level desk. How do you set up the two brackets on the bottom. I make these Create a Bed's for a living and I was sent this link by Arron at Create a Bed. We both want to know how you did this ?
Shoot me an email and I can send you some pics, but it’s not anything special. It’s just a piece of bar stock screwed to the cabinet and then into the desk. The trick is getting the length and locations correct.
But you also mentioned in your video that it would be easier to buy and install self levelling desk hardware. I have not been able to source anything so far. Any leads or suggestions? I called Create-a-bed and they don't know anyone. Funny because there are lots of them out there on manufactured folding bed/desk units.

If you buy a king size kit. They come sized for the mattress. Problem with a larger mattress is the pistons wouldn’t be calibrated for the weight.

It doesn’t make sense... unless you means you follow what makes sense. But if that’s the case I would say if you buy hardware designed to work in a certain way.. it makes the most sense to follow the plans to build the thing that hardware was designed to operate.
I know there is alot to cover but would be nice to have in a bit more detail.

I know :( It's long since been sold. But if you think the sawdust is shameful, you shoulda seen what that cheapo sprayer did to it with it's massive overspray. It's a wonder I didn't just stomp it pieces right then.

I think the build itself was awesome, but I think it was a waste to use expensive hardwood veneered plywood just to paint it white. It looks like melamine.
It’s just that Lowe’s sanded ply, it’s the cheapest plywood I can get that’s actually flat and not full of voids.
Like the video but the choice of music really triggered my misophonia. 😩
