Someone help me, I've just spent about 2 hours on youtube watching videos of Hozier singing live acoustic and covers :O Not that I haven't enjoyed every second of it...
So glad he decided to include this song on the album as a "bonus" ... this song moves me to the core... this song has stuck with me from the first moment I heard it and I'm pretty sure it will stay with me for a very long time
Love his description of this song and the process. I never realized how tragic this song is, but now that I know, it just has that much more of an effect on me. The fact that he recorded the official track on a rooftop and that he stayed away from excessive production on this song just makes it more perfect. It doesn't need anything else. Just the beautiful guitar melody and the poetic, heartbreaking lyrics.
He is one of my all time favourite artist, his way of weaving in religion and social issues in lovely composed music is amazing! And the raspiness of his voice is just a plus.
I first listened to this album last year in the wake of TMTC's success but i didn't think much of it. When he was nominated for a Grammy, I was rooting for him to win so badly not only because TMTC was one of my fav songs in the past year but I honestly think it was the most deserving and this is coming from a massive Sam Smith fan. I revisited the album after his performance at the Grammys and I haven't gone a day without playing it from start to finish since then. It's an absolute masterpiece!! It's interesting to hear his interpretation of the tracks, I like how layered and intricate his lyrics are. My favourite songs are It will come back ( I love that "Jesus Christ" yelp lol) and Jackie and Wilson. I should mention the modern classic, TMTC but it's not fair on the other tracks ha OT: First time hearing his speaking voice btw, so much calmness and humility contained within such great talent. I hope to see you live this summer Hozier and ready for the next offering :)
Honestly love your music. It's just inspiring to me. It's made all the better knowing you're a fellow Irish man. I've never encountered anything that consistently makes me feel so much. Thank you.
Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry As she can be I walk my days on a wire It looks ugly, but it's clean Oh mamma, don't fuss over me [Chorus:] The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Calls of guilty thrown at me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother But I want it, it's a crime That she's not around most of the time [Chorus:] Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing And it's worth it, it's divine I have this some of the time [Chorus:] Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Carol D. This is awfully late (but I just saw the video today and decided to read the comments, so you'll have to forgive me), but I managed to transcribe what he's saying about the song. See below. Cherry Wine was recorded on a hotel roof, an abandoned hotel roof, at five in the morning, in Greystones. I don't want to incriminate myself, so I didn't -- I wasn't trespassing, I'd say. I swear. To me, it's about -- again, it's open to interpretation -- but the sentiment behind that song was also captured in a song that Carole King wrote called "He Hit Me and It Felt Like a Kiss", and that's kind of what Cherry Wine is about. I think we kept the live version... I think it worked. We filmed it at the same time. I was doing a photoshoot with a photographer and I asked him the night before 'can you record audio' or 'can you record film', I should say. 'Cause I'm gonna bring a microphone and we're gonna try and do a session to see if it works.' And I think there was something nice about that recording, there was -- again, it was five in the morning, and dawn was breaking, so there's like a dawn chorus there, and there's just a nice atmosphere to it. You can hear birds singing and stuff like that. I was very tired when it was done, but I think there's an atmosphere to it, and I didn't want to look into arranging -- to me, melodically, there's other songs -- I don't know, it just worked. I didn't feel the need to explore more production for it, I suppose. Simple as that. It's kind of on the album as a bit of a bonus, you know what I mean. Just to tie it all up.
I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things
Katie Lane Just like a beautiful woman doing terrible things to a man.
Not to be dramatic but I would die for this man
Sounds very dramatic. He literally doesn’t know you exist
some songs are better with no production but in simplest form, this is one of them

Both his singing and talking voice are so relaxing
I could listen to him talk and sing all day
I can't get over how much I love him and his music, he creates such insanely brilliant pieces of art
I am so happy that hozier's music found me. Love the birds in the backround of this beautiful melody.
His accent really shows through in this song. I love it
He is one of my all time favourite artist, his way of weaving in religion and social issues in lovely composed music is amazing! And the raspiness of his voice is just a plus.
I love that it was recorded in this way and put on the album as is. So happy it's on there.
This song is so beautiful and peaceful. My favorite song.
His eyes are so green
Bonus? Hell its the best one for me
This is just beautiful thank you for sharing your talent with us.

his hair is so short in the video!!
Haha that was the first thing I noticed he reminds me of John Morrison
Why didn't I watch this like 3 years ago when I first fell in love with your music?!?!?
i could hear him talk and sing all day
This is perfection
This is probably the best thing I have heard
Raw, is beautiful.
Beautiful song.
HOZIER PLEASE ADD MORE DATES IN THE UK
the short hair
I think that Carol King's song was based on the reassuring line in Carousel by Rodgers and Hammerstein.
A song inspired by a song inspired by a song
I love this man
Interesting, on the album as a, "bit of a bonus" yet to me it's his best piece.
You don't know how much I admire you, and how much I wish to meet you one day ...
LOVE HOZJER
Love it and you!
Maybe he could give the dudes from Everything Everything schoolin on how to falsetto.

About the song.
Please!
Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns
Like rum on the fire
Hot and fast and angry
As she can be
I walk my days on a wire
It looks ugly, but it's clean
Oh mamma, don't fuss over me
[Chorus:]
The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Calls of guilty thrown at me
All while she stains
The sheets of some other
Thrown at me so powerfully
Just like she throws with the arm of her brother
But I want it, it's a crime
That she's not around most of the time
[Chorus:]
Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Her fight and fury is fiery
Oh but she loves
Like sleep to the freezing
Sweet and right and merciful
I'm all but washed
In the tide of her breathing
And it's worth it, it's divine
I have this some of the time
[Chorus:]
Way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Thank you, but I'd like the other part out the music letter. What he are saying about the music.
Anyway, Thank you.
