      Interesting, I’ve been wondering about that recently as I had to pull out of art school after a few months and always regretted that. I have wondered if it was a good thing in that I didn’t get programmed into a way of thinking that could have quenched my spirit.

    One of the great lies of our Western Society is that you have to make a career from your calling. If you don’t, you’re a failure. Thank you Rick for bringing this false mindset into the light. I spent 40 years working as a graphic designer: it was a non-onerous way to support myself while I wrote songs. Career: graphic design. Calling: songwriting. Two different things.

    • @nikita.kapustin
      @nikita.kapustin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      How did you felt/feel about splitting the two? does it work for you to split money/career and soul/passion?
      I am in the same boat with graphics as an income and music and some other things as a passion with which I don't want to earn money. But I am still struggling because in me is that voice that I have fully utilize what I am good at and monetize it etc...
      Somehow I can't just create for the sake of creation. It feels like wasted time in which I could grow my business or do something monetary productive.. How did you deal with this?
      Thanks

    • @mdmorris6193
      @mdmorris6193 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@nikita.kapustin Nikita, it was never easy. Took me a long time to realise that society was, in effect, selling us a lie. That I wasn’t a failure because I had a career. The thing I came to is that unless you become independently wealthy (from a lottery win or something), you will always be beholden to someone. With music, that someone might be a record company, an advertising firm or a film director. And that someone will almost always want to have input into what you’re doing. If you have a day job, you are totally free to make whatever music you want to make!

      @@rigelb9025 I could write a book explaining, it's complicated for many factors and reasons. Music is the love of my life; I trust with all my heart that my voice is strong enough to be a successful artist; and my imagination would lead to create dope music videos that millions of people around the world would love. But... I was born poor. That's the main reason I always have a hard time to create what I thought in my mind; and second, where I live there aren't too many options to create, because it is a small city.

    THIS IS A GOOD ONE. I can totally relate as a comedian that's been "grinding" for 8 years. The progress (as an artist and person) and sheer amount of creative material I've amassed impresses myself and reminds me that it hasn't been for nothing, but the fact that my "career" has barely changed constantly toys with my head. This video helped me rememember that I'm not doing this for anyone else; it's between me and God/the universe. My best material is stuff that makes ME laugh or things that I enjoy to re-read, and this is my beacon, not the critics. Trying to make art FOR specific people is a recipe for disaster, because you still might not make money, but you also just sold out on yourself.

I’ve also learned through this, that disappointment will follow. But what you fail at isn’t for you, those who are against you aren’t for you. I just want to continue learning and making my art and hope that it helps someone ❤

      This is not true. Jobs always created a product first, and then spend billions in marketing to manipulate people to like it.
      There are many products superior to Apple engineered in China.
      Apple still is able to throw the fan base sand into the eyes. And people are hooked by this manipulation.
      They stand in rows for days in front of Apple stores to be the first ones to get the newest iPhone.
      This is for me the definition of stupidity because there is no true new innovation in a mobile phones. Apple didn’t made anything groundbreaking new in the past 15 years. But yet people buy it like crazy.
      Jobs is dead and Apple is running on old ideas. Same is true for fake Engineers like Musk, who lies as soon he opens his mouth.
      No, true success comes from humility. Sadly we life in a time where the biggest narcissists gets all the admirers.
      If you love yourself its truly easy to recognize how insecure people like Trump, Musk etc. are.

    Amazing advice. External, physical things don't fill that hole, because it's spiritual.

      Your art should be a gift to God because you are responding to gifts from God. It goes both ways. It's give and take. And it goes beyond that dynamic, too.

    Make your work a gift to God and a response to gifts from God. If you don't like word God, try Nature, Reality, the universe, or whatever term you understand and are comfortable with.
