"She loves like sleep to the freezing" hits me hard. If you're suffering from hypothermia and fall asleep, the odds are good that you won't wake up. In other words, her love is slowly killing him.
Oh wow okay I actually thought it the other way. Like when you're freezing and get in a bed to sleep is the best feeling. Thanks I didn't know that. Maybe its double sense? She is killing him, but its also comfortable? Idk maybe?
This song is so interesting and written so brilliantly...he's singing about being abused and cheated on by this woman, but he's still so drawn to her and tries to justify it. You don't often hear about men being abused by women and I think this is really eye-opening. How many men are abused by women but are too proud or too afraid to lose the woman to admit it? Such a great song, and Hozier is an amazing songwriter. Can't wait to hear more from him in the future.
What i found even more interesting was the fact that in the music video, he had a man abusing a woman too. So the gender norms were reversed again, to show that abuse is abuse regardless of the gender, and that is can be equally as enticing/traumatizing at the same time.
I was one of those guys alright she never cheated on me but I was her mental and physical punching bag and then cut a long story short she realised I was pulling away because I was sick of being treated the way I was she accused me of the things she done to me but luckily the police realised I was innocent and she had zero proof of anything ever happening, I however had photos of black eyes, scratches to my face and neck, strangle marks, clumps of hair that was pulled from my head and now it’s currently being investigated after I spoke out during the interview over all her bs allegations which were dropped against me but my kids however were taken into care and now I’m fighting in family court for custody of them it’s heartbreaking but all 1000% truth and hoping that soon it will all be out there for everyone to see that men do and can be domestically abused sexually, physically and mentally and I’m the living proof of it! The more people realise it happens the better because it’s a horrible experience coming forward not only do you feel like you’ve lost everything but you get dismissed and mocked and interrogated and generally treated like absolute shit and it’s wrong we need a change of system in investigating domestic abuse against men!
if you do not understand what I mean by that then you probably are shit in bed and do not know that foreplay with a woman has more to do with our other senses than touch. david beckham is a prime example of the opposite of sex in a voice. notice women agreed with the comment - so if you are into pleasing a woman perhaps you should try to learn something instead of trying to be clever! #NoPussy4You
This song is actually extremely beautiful and sad. It's fairly obvious that this song is about the abuse he is suffering in a relationship, but the way that he writes it is so amazing in addressing gender roles of how he's feeling it can't truly be abuse because he's male, and It shouldn't hurt him. And the fact that he still loves her "Her fight and fury's fiery, oh but she loves like sleep to the freezing." makes it all the more tragic. Some of the lyrics are just so well written and full of so much emotion they sent me into a mini existential crisis.
+Abby Other I agree with you but I think you're reading into the gender roles part. When listening to, and even reading his lyrics, he doesn't say anything to suggest that he feels that as a man, he should not be affected by the abuse. He draws emphasis on the fact that he loves her despite the way she treats him. This is evident in the way he describes her so delicately. The way you see it as him thinking he shouldn't be hurt could just be from the bias of our view and interpretation of men being the victims in an abusive relationship. The song may lead the listener to assess the double standard of men who are abused by women but his lyrics don't explicitly address this.
***** I had to say hello ,Thoth. :) Hello. my ears are open, my head is clear, I am hearing your words, your wisdom, in my mind, saturating my heart, manifesting through my actions, they guide me, as I extract myself from the causes of suffering... Peace
@Green Space obviously very late, but three years ago, you said ... "Sounds like a familiar story, but only a tragic one when the gender roles are flipped." why is that? it's not tragic when a woman is abused? i understand that there's a lot of toxic masculinity that comes in to play when a man is physically abused by a woman, but i don't think it's a matter of being more or less tragic; it's just a different kind of tragedy.
Watching Hozier play live sessions is hypnotic. I can't take my eyes off him; the way he keeps his eyes closed most of the time, so lost in the music and the feeling of it, the way his pitches and guitar are so melodious and perfect, makes my whole self feel buzzed with happiness and peace. And the live sessions are, in my opinion, just as good or even better than the studio recordings. There's just something about hearing the raw, unchanged sound of Hozier's voice live that is completely mesmerizing.
Victim or not, he is dealing with it through the most beautiful way, art=music. Plus, if you listen to the lyrics, you'd see that she is cheating on him, "staining the sheets of another". And... "the way she shows me I'm hers and she's mine, open hand or closed fist, will be fine", clearly means that she has the upper hand. This is pure beauty, no matter what anyone says. That is what is so great about art; it is open to interpretation. Nobody shares the same perspective or hears the same song, or feels the same sunlight.
Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry As she can be I walk my days on a wire. It looks ugly, but it's clean, Oh momma, don't fuss over me. Forgive me if I'm over thinking this. But this guy has such poetic genius that he flipped the temperature in relation to the good and bad side of her. At first the icy marking her bad and the burn juxtaposing it. At the end fiery being her bad and freezing being the soothing. It just feels like more emphasis of this not just being a beaten man, but someone with straight up Stockholm.
I recently just discovered Hozier for a little over a year now. I'm turning 23 in two days. Hozier is 33 years old, and this video is from 10 years ago. He probably recorded this song the same age as me now. If I could say something to this man when he uploaded this masterpiece is: "you've made it. you created songs that not only inspires but make people feel a little less lonely. Don't worry about being a college drop out because you've used that to become a great poet, lyricist, and musician. ohh and your guitar, you've taken good care of it. you still use it in performing and recording songs." with life full of possibilities and uncertainties. I still get teary eyed over Jeff Buckley when i listen to him. Such talent taken at such a young age. Hozier though has that same raw, powerful type of sound to him that he did, so maybe it will fill the void I have over jeff buckley being gone.

His voice is immaculatel. He is only 24 going on 25 but has such a rich, soulful and just amazing voice mixed with Gospel, Blues, Folk and soul. His lyrics are always just gorgeous and his whole album blew me away. I don't even know how...he really is just something special I'm glad I've come across. Beautiful beautiful voice and just how he carries himself too! Of course he's a little awkward and shy in front if cameras but he doesn't let that from stop him from putting his message out there.
Not only is this one of the best performances I have ever heard, its also one of the best lyrical songs i have ever listened to. This song can be perceived as physical or emotional abuse but i believe it is emotional. What makes this song so great is his use of positive connotation, even if the song is negative. How can something be so dark and so beautiful at the same time! So many of your songs are like this, and i can't get enough! My son though says, "Stop it! Stop liking all the artists I like!" 😂
I don't know why but the first time i hear this song I cry a lot. There is something in his voice that bring me peace. I can't believe I'm going to see him in a concert. I love him.
It's cool that he has this amazing range and that his voice is unique to him in the way that it goes from an indie artist to almost a bluesy sound. I seriously love his voice.
Pov: You’re on an early morning walk in the woods, cardinals and finches sing in the distance as you venture deeper. As you walk, you see a stream. Trees and bushes flourish from the water. Fish swim longingly in the water, content in their home. But, something catches your eye. A large stone beside the river. A perfect spot to sit. There was a man. A man with long, brunette hair holding a guitar. He strung his music, singing a story on love and tragedy. He sings with a longing to someone. Alone. Alone he must be to sing his sorrows of love. This man, allowing himself to become vulnerable to the earth once more.
I've listened to so many people cover this song, but no one can make it as heartfelt as the original. I didn't know I'd cry when I heard it LIVE in concert.
It was 7am and we were on the roof of an abandoned hotel looking at the sun rise over the Irish Sea listening to the birds sing. Hard to be anything but relaxed.
That's not a tuner. That is a Capo and is used to raise the pitch of the guitar, so he can play in completely different keys on the same guitar versus wide open sans capo.
There isn't a song on the album that I don't like. Each one is a vivid snapshot of the subject's life. Passion, love, hate, struggle. As a survivor, this song touched me deeply.
I'm literally addicted to this song. It relaxes me. His talent is incredible. He deserves every last bit of praise for his beautiful work. So glad he's grown so much recently.
Did he really shoot arguably his best track in one take? Arguably one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard... in one take?

Hozier is such a phenomenal artist. I wish I would write songs this beautiful.
How can one human be this beautiful ? God really got his shit together when he created Hozier.
How can something be so dark and so beautiful at the same time! So many of your songs are like this, and i can't get enough! My son though says, "Stop it! Stop liking all the artists I like!" 😂
I heard "Take me to church" and by the first line I was in love with his voice. "Cherry wine" is now my favorite Hozier song.
This song feels like a warm fire on a clear winter night.
Type of voice that makes you fall in love even before seeing the singer :3
In my eyes hozier cant do any wrong hope he keeps blowing up totally deserves it
I think this is my favorite way for him to wear his hair.
His voice is mesmerizing, what a writer, too, you can really feel the lyrics.
seven years later and this is still my SHIT. this song will never ever get old.
the concept of this song is fucking me over from how it’s recorded, the darkness of the lyrics but the peacefulness of the guitar.. i’m blown away
I don't know why but the first time i hear this song I cry a lot.
There is something in his voice that bring me peace. I can't believe I'm going to see him in a concert. I love him.
Who can believe that this is LIVE? OMG he is adorable, i'm melting.
2019 and I'm still listening to all of your songs. I love you, Andrew.
He is such a gorgeous artist. So happy to have been around to see him blow up like this.
I literally listen to his album at least once a day. Such an amazing songwriter and beautiful voice.
I could sit there and listen to him sing all day.
music equivalent of laying in long grass near a stream and daydreaming. Utter heaven
He has a voice of an angel ♡
Hozier has the voice of an angel, but you met the real deal, you met Ginger-Jesus, i would give both my legs to meet Ed! ♥
Yes it's true Ed is .... i don't have word to describe him ♡
There is no word to describe him...
when the lyrics burns your flesh but the warmth of his voice cradles your soul
exactly how i feel
"I now award Andrew Hozier-Byrne with the first ever Hozier Award!"
What an inspiring combination of vocals and guitar.
been here since 2014, never gonna leave. this man deserves the world ❤️
i could listen to this song for hours and it doesnt get old
I've listened to so many people cover this song, but no one can make it as heartfelt as the original. I didn't know I'd cry when I heard it LIVE in concert.
Freakin amazing.... love how his tuner on the guitar is on, and it totally doesn't matter.... so relaxed peaceful! Legendary!
Amazed that you picked that up... At least we know it's in tune :-)
David Novin :) no dude, not the capo on the neck of his guitar, the built in tuner on the preamp cut into the body work. Capo's are great though!
That's an EQ. not a tuner
I love the singing birds at the background noise... So peaceful and serene... Beautiful lyrics and that voice .... Paradise?
100% real too. Everything you hear is coming through that single microphone live.
I so hope he has more in him to share with the world. Every song I heard from this guy is beautiful and so easy on my ears.
Hozier literally makes me sob his music is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard, true talent.
Whenever i feel troubled, i come here.
Thank you hozier
I hope music like this is around for a very long time.
This is the definition of awesome.
He has a gorgeous soulful voice and a gorgeous exterior to match it.
Best Irish Artist EVER! Proud to be Irish!
Hozier can do anything!! This beautiful man & beautiful song blow me away ❤
Am thanking my friend for telling me about Hozier, he's amazing. I love this.
What a beautiful man. In so many ways.
I think he had his on board tuner on the whole song. Proof that no one is perfect.
he does lol !
Ah his voice and guitar playing is so relaxing! And his hair here! :O I love it!
He's like an angel
The purest expression of grief
Gives me chills everytime
Never has so beautiful a voice sung such beautiful words and been paired with such beautiful acoustics
Wow ive only just heard this. Today I discovered Hozier "Cherry Wine" and Noah Clouds - Love is not enough. It's been a great day.
Lucy Ren cool

Lucy Ren Two great song writers
Lucy Ren had a look at Noah Clouds song and its actually really good wasnt expecting that
There isn't a song on the album that I don't like. Each one is a vivid snapshot of the subject's life. Passion, love, hate, struggle. As a survivor, this song touched me deeply.
Birds singing along with an angel...
I'm literally addicted to this song. It relaxes me. His talent is incredible. He deserves every last bit of praise for his beautiful work. So glad he's grown so much recently.
