    Whenever I damage my gear, I think "oh well, the ocean took the paycheck today for me using it" :) The most expensive paychecks were windsurfing on bigger waves and getting washed into a shore break. Mast breaks the board, breaks itself, cuts the sail in pieces and you still have to carry all this through a long walk of shame... :D
    Picking up the wing from the water is a bit like a windsurf water-start, you just already are on your knees on a board. I try to already have my arm on the front handle, then just quickly get up with the help of the wind, same as you say...

      That's a good way of looking at it! Yeah with windsurfing the gear is even more expensive! Looks like your starting technique is similar to mine.

    Hi WindAddict. Nice videos!
    I had a similar experience to yours. Moved from 110 liters to a Lemon 80 liters (I weigh 75) last November. The normal knee start was almost impossible with the size of the waves and chop in my "winter" spot in Tenerife. The first day I fell down out there and it took me more than 20 min. to get up again (I almost ended up in the rocks). Anyway, the game changer for me was what they call the stinkbug start (search for a video from "ktwo", about this. It is the best I have seen by far) The first day or two were still difficult, but now I get up immediately, no matter the size of waves or chop. I am even thinking of a 65 liters ... (as he says in the video, with a smaller board everything is way easier)

      That is why I started on 95ltr board while being 90kg weight. Couple days of struggling and on day 3 going strong! :) (I do have extensive windsurfing, kitesurfing and kitefoiling background)

      Thanks for your comment! I watched videos of the stinkbug start. I definitely want to try it. However since you are laying face-down on the board at the start, I think it's not the best for me since I always wear a harness.

    • @artvandeley2000
      @artvandeley2000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@windaddict Ah ok. I don't use a harness, so haven't noticed that problem. In any case, maybe I am wrong but I think in this version of the stinkbug start, unlike in others, you don't lay face-down on the board completely (you do not touch the board with your belly, so I guess the hook will not touch the board) at any moment. In case you want to check it out, here is a link to the video: th-cam.com/video/f-pjLPTLZLM/w-d-xo.html

    To gain more stability when on my knees and holding the wing.. if the wind lessens I try to keep my butt lower.. even on my heels. Also I lean over more.. just to keep centre of gravity lower..it feels more stable. As soon as the wind picks up I raise my butt and upper body to get going. So a little bit stink bug position to gain stability

    Nice videos, well done. I use the inst360 one X 2 on the lower end of my main strut and it seems to be a safer location, so far. I have a short string leash from the camera mount to the lower handle just in case. Keeping water drops off the lenses is my biggest annoyance, sometimes a little bit of Rain-X helps. Thanks for posting this, I am considering going from 105 litres to 95 so its interesting to see how you are doing. I'm easily 92kgs at the moment😒

    Hey neat video, you will be surprised you can go even smaller - I am 58 yrs old and ride the lethal @65l, it's like balancing on a ping pong ball :)

    • @windaddict
      @windaddict  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh for sure. I understand that you can go down to 45L even. You just have to learn to waterstart a sinker. But from what I hear this limits your ability to get up on foil in light wind a bit. Where I foil we have predominantly light wind, so I don't think I will go for a sinker anytime soon. What's your weight if I may ask?

    • @ryodeo1341

      @@windaddict 65kgs so the board sinks more in winter gear, the big difference is your larger volume board means you can stand in zero wind, once the wind drops I'm down every time

      But then your weight to volume ratio is very similar to mine. I weigh about 88kg, with wetsuit and harness probably over 90kg.

    I had both lemon the old and the new , you will enjoy the front strap Y position more centered, im usualy up in flight faster too and you can bounce better on water i noticed , i find the new lemon more challenging than the previous one , more performance oriented.
    I noticed on wave condition the lemon is hard to stay on , i hope you wont regreat your choice of going smaller but apparently you noticed it too . I do climb parallel too it's faster but with the front foot in the strap and knee already half up , but it's less stable in chop . Unfortunately with a small wing ( 4m and less ) it's even harder because the wing size help lot kind of stabilize you in chop, so when it's too choppy i have to do the front position leg bend .
    And to finish i noticed the lighter the foil the less it's act as anchor or as a stabiliser , i noticed it with my 3kg foil compared to my gong 6kilos foil, the lemon can be really wobbly now .
    I tried a 90 liter afs fire board and because of it's shape (rectangular like tomo surfboard) it's easier to get on than my lemon 120 liter ! that is crazy !
    The shape and the weigth of the board is as important as the litter , sometime it's pointless to go lower volume if you gain 200gram and you lose only 20 liters...
    I recommend you to put you some gong rail saver , mine got a lot of dent on rails and im using a board bag !

    • @windaddict
      @windaddict  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Youdig. I hope the new board will bounce better after jumps to stay up on foil. Let's see. Ok, I will try to put my front foot in the strap earlier as you suggest. Wow, I didn't know there are such big weight differences in foils!! I am always on aluminium masts so I guess my foil is on the heavier side. (which is a good thing for stability as you say). Yeah I have seen videos of rectangular boards but I can imagine that they would be hard to accelerate on and touch the waves more while riding. Such good advice about the Gong Rail Saver! I didn't know about this product! This is what I need! :-)

    • @youdigsurf
      @youdigsurf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@windaddict for the railsaver use a hairdrier to shape it step by step and start gluing it by the center of the rail. For the rectangular shape they have worked the bottom perfectly to bounce back up most of the time the bottom are not rectangular like the outline .

      Thanks for the link! He is on fairly flat water though. The waves here at my spot would immediately push me off the board with this technique. 90 degrees to the wind (and waves) straddling or kneeling just doesn't work here unfortunately.

    and yet again, you find a way to mess up your gear. Being the person that gets the MOST annoyed if your gear gets the slightestttt scratch on it. You should really just be more careful, ya know? 😄
