- Tim Heidecker's On Cinema at the Cinema is a web series created by Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington. Well, web series is reductive... its more like a cinematic universe... the OCU?
I love this show so much, so i made this deep dive video essay explaining why, for any other fans that are interested or people that haven't seen it yet or are unaware.
Please consider liking and subscribing if you do enjoy this, I want to make more videos like this about On Cinema at the Cinema, as well as similar subjects.

Whats everyones favorite on cinema moment that i missed in this video?
The 3d model of Tom Cruise Heidecker Jr. It tied in with the electric sun festival scam. It's dark but too funny
@@microcity1191 thats absolutely one of mine too, so great
@@microcity119130 seconds before this gregg does a bond impression and tim interrupts it, so when tim sits down to start introducing the 3d model, gregg yells 'HAAA' real loud to disrupt him. one of the most cunning displays of power throughout the entire show.
My favorite On Cinema moment is when Tim almost drifts into a vape induced coma, but Gregg name drops the film "Oh God!" and Tim wakes up with hate and abject terror in his eyes.
Paul Driver episode.
With essays like tim heidecker in them you cant go wrong

🥤🥤🥤
Is this a sentence?
“Gregg Turkington, who has a tendency to drone monotonously about movies without saying anything of substance at all”
This Tim head wouldn’t know good movie expertise if it ran him over in a car full of VHS tapes.
😂
I agree with you. It's a very lonely fandom, completely under-appreciated, and a masterpiece.
Also, what episode is it that gregg slips up and reveals the ending of Decker? I am struggling to find it, thinking it's somewhere season 4 or 5?
its season 6, ep 7
I feel this comment.
such is the life of the ronins of comedy....
I'm so glad that people are still making these KINDS of youtube videos

Quiet on set!
I haven't watched the video yet, but I can already feel this is top quality entertainment given the 49-minute runtime. 5 bags of popcorn.
Unfortunately it ended up being blown ass, may as well just walk away. :(
I give it 5 bags of popcorn and three large sodas

Hi, I have been working as the VFX artist for On Cinema since season 12 (also worked on X-Posed, Wendy Kerby Valentine, animator of Deck of Cards) and you really did a great job of encapsulating the magic of On Cinema here. Wonderful work, keep ‘em comin!
great work thats awesome!
Hey Dan! I've become a fan of your music and film work since Brick by Brick.
You do really great work!
where do we buy it soo Tim actually gets paid?
fancy seeing you here.
The idea that I’m watching the greatest comedy of all time but I can’t show it to anyone is my exact feeling. I’ve tried for years to pitch people around me to discover it but I’m still utterly alone.
Aren't we all. I'd love to see subscription stats on HEI network to know how many of us are there.
@@nebojsadurmanovic2268 until HEI INC has their IPO i think their subscriber numbers are confidential.
The Oscar livestream said 5K watching
I expect more than a rough estimate of the runtime. Gregg would have gone the distance and figure it out which is why we rely on him and the show.
I leave that stuff to the experts
It’s next to impossible to really explain and sell On Cinema to somebody. You have to just watch from the beginning, and you either get it or you don’t.
Truly brilliant and hilarious.
This video essay is the next best chance, though. A real five-bagger.
I’m gonna send it to some friends who I’m trying to indoctrinate into Hei living.
I think I speak for all On Cinema-heads when I say,
kudos and keep up the good work.

I made this for my friend since the playlist he was watching wasnt complete. I got him into it about a month ago. Truly wild.
You kinda need to be snowed-in at a cabin or traveling with someone to properly and fully subject them to enough of the show that they have to keep watching once they start to get it. It doesn’t really work if you just convince a buddy to check it out because even if they think the first couple episodes are funny they will most likely pick something else up and forget about the show before it gets its hooks in.
@@refoliationhahaha that’s the idea - keep someone captive til they get it 😂 Love your style 😂
I started with Tim & Eric and became obsessed with that brand of humor, although none of my friends ever got it. Then I saw On Cinema and realized Tim's a genius.
i started with billion dollar movie. my sister showed it to me. It was a wild experience.
I created friendships through T&E alone
I started with Tom goes to the Mayor. Then Tim and Eric. Some of my favorite comedy, until it broke my heart when Tim went w o. K e
I give this documentary 5 bags of popcorn, 5 sodas and a little TH-cam play button trinket.
When you got movies like Tom Cruise in them, you can’t lose!
I love how each season features a completely new incarnation of Tim, with a new look and personality.
Oh, God! (1977, 98 mins), this was an amazing video. Great work!
Hahaha, Thank you very much!
5 bags of popcorn and a foam hand with a thumbs up because that's what you do when you see this video, you give your thumbs up and like it.
You never feel more alone than you do when you try to get your closest friends to get into OCATC.
its always tough
Hey guy
Fantastic 5 bag essay! I'm 42 live in rural Missouri. I saw a guy last month with a VFA tshirt on and I ran and hugged him. We talked for like 20 minutes, total strangers bonding over our show
i had someone recently approach me about my pitzmans mustard shirt and asked me if i was a "timHead", needless to say we got along great
I literally stopped when you said how hard it was to get into and binged the entire series.
Thanks!
love to hear that, hope you liked it!
Usually these deep dive videos are on things I know little to nothing about. This is the first thing that I've seen almost everything about it. The whole show, the trial, decker, the other spin off movies, the Oscar specials, the Hei network website itself, the whole meta reality of this damn thing. And I gotta say, the truest thing about this video is the feeling that, this show is entirely trapped in my own head. I will never, ever be able to share this with anyone else in my actual life.
Man i feel so lucky to have seen this show unfold in real time. It's so hard to contextualize retrospectively. I'm sure there's probably licensing issues, but I've always hoped there could be some chronologic compendium release of all the associated media. My favorite moment is Greg almost killing everybody at the Oscar special/wedding. I'd love to see a dive into all the Oscar specials! Subbed for more!
as fate would have it, an oscar deep dive is the exact video im currently working on! thanks for the sub🙏
Everybody slowly dying because of car fumes is probably one of my favorite moments in any media ever.
I vividly remember watching that live, I couldn’t believe how long the stream was going with no one moving. One of my favorite moments ever too, part of me thought that’s how they were ending the show
I remember watching it at work (in a production truck doing Oscars coverage for an online outlet), and trying to keep up while cutting videos. I check out for a few minutes and next thing I know everyone is dead on the ground and I have no idea what happened 😅
It’s like a Long game comedy universe, I have such a hard time explaining this show to others while conveying how hilarious it is. You did great with this and it’s just scratching the onion.
This is awesome. I firmly believe On Cinema will go down as a pivotal piece of comedy history, but won’t be recognized as such for many years
Would love a deep dive into the lore of Dekkar and specifically Axiom and Manuel
thanks for the suggestion, i am definitely planning to do that for sure!
This video is absolutely perfect and embodies my same thoughts. Right down to the part about not bothering trying to explain it to anybody unless you can just show it to them. When they’re into it, you present them with the rest of it. Did this very thing to my brother this summer. And he loves it.
thanks so much thats awesome to hear! and glad you were able to get your bro into the show! still working on my people haha
a can’t imagine how much of a loser you are, the only funny thing about tim heidecker and his loser friends are how they look and how cringe they are
Man I've been watching and rewatching On Cinema for ages, but you were able to articulate so many things about it, what exactly it is, what makes it so special and the characters, things that I'd never fully considered - really glad to see someone this passionate about it making such a video.
Giving this video 5 bags of popcorn based off the run time along! Over 49 minutes!
About 4 minutes longer than the film Deck of Cards, based off the bestselling deck, thats a pretty cool runtime
On Cinema cult feels so small and contained and I love it. I want the show to grow more but love the cult status it has. I hope it goes on forever. Thank you for this video, I’d watch all the OCATC videos you make.
Totally agree! and thanks!!
Ocatc is a service to humanity and the greatest comedic commitment of all time.
Thabk you for this labor of love.. even though no one will watch it except for us.
That’s enough for me!
I hope Tim and Gregg have seen this. What an incredible gift you’ve given the on cinema fam with this work of art!! 😁 Thank you!!
Wow thank you! I hope so too lol
Yes! Keep making video essays about the on cinema universe. This is some valuable TH-cam scholarship.

Great video. I definitely think you need to do individual breakdowns of all the aspects of the show. The trial, Dekkar & DKR, the schemes (money zap, rio jenesis, 5 bag theater), the decker series, the VFA, all the health issues, the relationships, the Oscar specials, etc. The dense world building is what makes this show truly great.
thanks! im having alot of fun making these so ill be putting a bunch more out on those subjects for sure, theres just way too much to talk about for one video
Already been done by the On the Funny podcast. They go through every season
Already been done by the On the Funny podcast. They go through every season
I love how this video is 50 minutes long and you barely reused footage from the show. It just goes to show how many insane and memorable moments there've been over the years. Absolutely my favorite piece of comedy, and probably art, in existence
I give this video essay 5 bags and a little like button for you to click after watching it.
Mark's Calvacade of Characters - featuring his 'King of the Gremlins' performance - is peak On Cinema and so underrated.
I'm glad someone else found that funny. My brother and I almost pissed our pants, especially he flubs it in his own heilot, but also in his interview on the previous episode of On Cinema.
I watch the oscar Specials and decker over and over. I even listen at work because I know every look on every face without video
Just seeing the intro edit and all the footage over the years and how much has both happened and at the same time not happened and how much laughter all of it has brought
Dr. Wareheim and the TIm and Eric live watch-alongs are also top tier! Definitely some of my favorite comedy ever!
agreed, and same here
I used to think it would be tough to explain "On Cinema..." to anyone who hadn't watched "Time & Eric" or any of their iterations, but you've pretty much explained the long arc of the show and its concept for the uninitiated. I really don't think Heidecker is getting the credit he deserves for what he's been doing with these TH-cam series over the years (and the narrative arc of his alter ego character, which is just amazing lol).
I've never really watched Tim & Eric but am a diehard OCATC fan
I absolutely loved and was enthralled by Fielder and Safdie’s “The Curse” and I think anyone who gets sucked into that style of comedy, which feels very voyeuristic, will appreciate “On Cinema, At The Cinema.” “On Cinema” is my favorite long con; the world they’ve built throughout the years and the dedication Heidecker and Turkington to keep building it is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.
I just finished watching the curse last week actually, I loved it too and I think youre dead on. Even though on the surface the two shows are wildly different
I like the fact there’s a whole universe created in On Cinema and it feels like I’m the only one watching. Love it.
Kudos for making such a great video for my all time favorite comedy ever. I don't like when people say about On Cinema things like "people don't get real comedy" or "this has ruined other comedy for me" which I used to hear a lot and found to be a bit pompous, so I'm glad you captured the nuances of this being just great comedy that is niche but not necessarily better or worse - just so rewarding because of how much it challenges you in the way you normally only associate with great dramas that, for example, might force you to challenge your emotions to get the reward of the drama experience
high praise thanks so much!
Falling into the On Cinema rabbit hole was the best thing I've done.
I grew up with Tim and Eric Awesome show, and my friend a couple years ago told me about the Tim's Electric Sun Festival "Trial" and said it was the funniest thing he had seen in a while. I love crazy performance art and it had me rollin. Then I seen that it was connected to a web series On Cinema at the Cinema and just binged the whole thing. Watched Mister America, watched the Oscar Specials, etc. I just love the chemistry between Gregg and Tim. Masterpiece indeed.
I sincerely believe this is Tim and Gregg's magnum opus. It's so underappreciated because there is so much going on beneath the surface that people missed out on
So glad someone is covering this absolute GEM of a UNIVERSE he built
My boy LaRue always holds it down
Late to the party, but thank you for breaking this masterpiece of niche humor down!
It’s impossible to share with new people without context, but every once in awhile you meet another Decker-Head out in the wild and immediately fall in love with them.
Proud supporter of the HEI Network, brings us endless giggles. ❤
On Cinema changed my life, I can’t even think about Oscar Fever without absolutely losing it. Especially the 2nd one with the marching band
Been waiting so long for somebody to make a video like this. 5 bags of popcorn
I think I've seen every episode like 3-4 times. It gets better each time you watch it
it really does, ages like a fine wine
My favorite thing about this whole series are the live Oscar specials because it's a several hour long highly improvised show where the real Tim and Greg are desperately trying to keep in character throughout the whole thing. My favorite thing is when they do break and have to somehow hide it, and that's also when you know that eachoter's performances are getting to them. Greg especially is hard to crack, so when Tim does something that forces him to turn away from the camera it's just extra hilarious.
Tim has been one of my favorite comedic talents since I first became aware of his work on adult swim
Yeah, Tim can have some funny moments, but I just wish he would remember what the show is all about and keep it about the movies
Exactly, its on cinema not "on terrible music"
Did you know that famous actor Elvis Presley also made music? One of those crazy obscure facts😅
Here we go, riling up all the Tim heads and Greg heads.
Seriously. Gregg needs to take the reigns and just do what he’s born to do. Tim is born to be a mass murderer and he’s already fulfilled that prophecy at his little festival 😤

The concept of the show is very hard to convey, but you did an excellent job. You're an awesome writer.
i really appreciate that! and glad you liked it
Buddy, you're killing it with these On Cinema videos. This one in particular perfectly captures what I have never been able to put into words. Well done.
the quote where tim says "oh i know him that's chris delgado. i had met him before the show. and he told me this and i'll never forget it till the day i die. he said, if anything should happen to me, it's not your fault. and wow. what a prophesy."
You’re not alone. Also my favorite comedy show / series. Had a real problem with it last year. It’s all I watched.
I’m really glad someone feels the same about Tim Heidecker that I do, he is such a master of comedy.
I really liked Tim and Eric, I can’t get over the way I feel like they are “Hollywood” type of people it makes me sick, same goes for Johnny Knoxville and Stevo I will take a rambling cracked out bam over whatever Stevo has turned into any day
@@williambarringer6513eugh I agree about Steve O, he is so insufferable, I am glad he is seemingly happier but he has fallen into the trap of so many who are in recovery where they are on such a high horse and so self congratulatory that it makes people like me who are still struggling with substance abuse so turned off from the whole NA 12 step scene and actually does more harm than good. But what’s up with Tim being one of these Hollywood types? I’ve never heard a bad word about the tbh except from Sam Hyde fans 🤢( haha Nazis and school shooters so funny! 🤮) But what has he done or is he just kinda a jerk irl?

Phenomenal writing and performance. Heidecker is a genius.

Until now I have only watched Tim and Eric Awesome and Decker. Both are REALLY unique, awkward, funny, weird, etc.. Just watched this and it was amazing. So smart. Excellent video
I've been trying to get a few close friends who were big fans of Tim and Eric back in the day and pretty much everything Tim Heidecker has made since and I cannot, for the life of me, convince them that the time invested is more than justified by how brilliant On Cinema is. I just hope one day they'll get into it so I can talk about the show with them.
I watched and understood Tom Goes to the Mayor. My learning curve will be instantaneous.

Thanks for this. I too feel isolated in my appreciation of Tim and his clan's genius. It's good to know you and others are out there....somewhere. IMO the Tim and Eric Show was as revolutionary as the very first season of SNL was to TV comedy in it's day. And yes I'm that old.
Well said!
Fun fact! Mark's injury in the beginning of the 9th Oscar Special was a last minute rewrite due to Mark testing positive for COVID a couple days before the special was set to air.

This whole video though, 7/5 bags of popcorn and i'll just slide them over - gonna subscribe. Thanks for the amount of effort this must have recquired.
you cant slide bags of popcorn over... but nonetheless i really do appreciate it and thanks for the comment! Joe estevez is the best actor in his family
I can’t believe how long they’ve been running this gag
I stopped watching this at the 9m mark because you convinced me to go and watch them all again before hitting the spoilers!
I think you captured some of the best lines, but one of my favourites is: "Your son is in HELL, Delgados!" - a line that is SO beyond the pale given the backstory, only Tim could pull it off!!
glad i could convince you for a rewatch! and yes lol that is still probably the craziest line in the history of the show honestly
The most similar example to the HEI Network I've seen is Mystery Science Theater 3000's Gizmoplex, which launched around the same time, but had a massive Kickstarter and backing from Shout! Factory attached. I'm glad that a video like this was made! Great effort and some awesome editing, Gorgg, looking forward to your future projects.
Nice! i haven't checked that out but ill have to look into it. I was hoping someone in the comments would help me out with a comparison. i find the idea of independent shows setting up dedicated sites like that and essentially being funded by their fanbase so interesting and wonder how much of that we'll see going forward. thank you for the support appreciate you!

Thank you for this. Now I can go from "okay give me 3 hrs to explain On Cinema to you" to "okay just watch this 50 minute long video essay".
Glad I could help!
Whenever I try to pitch On Cinema to someone who hasn't seen it, I sound so all-over-the-place and crazy that my friends just politely nod and move on. There's no way to express what makes it so good without watching it. I don't know how to explain why a 5-hour mock trial is even watchable, let alone one of the most brilliant and layered comedic pieces ever. I don't have a quick sell about why a man in a Pinocchio costume sobbing while face-down in a pile of cake-covered VHS tapes is both obviously funny and genuinely chilling, in context.
OCATC is also my favorite comedy show ever. If I could, I'd give it 10 bags of popcorn!
That’s great but personally, I’d give it 5 bags of popcorn, since as we both know, that *is* the highest rating.

Just wanted to say I really appreciate your passion for making long form videos about such an obscure comedy you love. It reminds me of how happy I was when people were FINALLY making videos on my favorite tv show of all time, Moral Orel. It was my fave show ever since it came out but just fell into obscurity and that 3rd season became notorious for making it unapproachable, although I always disagreed. But this past year, I’ve seen so many video essays of people sharing there love for it.
Anyways, just get that same feeling from these. Great work dude

I still remember starting to plan a fan based Oscar Special when Adult Swim cancelled On Cinema and before they rolled out HEI. It would have been a shell of a proper special, but it could have been fun. Hopefully we have many more years of On Cinema via the superior HEI Network platform and we can focus on things like music, entertainment news, and an AI guest host to replace Gragg.

Great video. You missed a few favorites. 1. Anything and everything to do with Tom Cruise Heidecker Jr. 2. The importance of the Oscar Specials in general, how difficult they must be to pull off live, and 3. The many renditions & performances of Oscar Fever & Empty Bottle

OCATC is my favorite show ever, but I also don't recommend it. The most I'll do it send a clip. I got my wife into it for awhile. Imagine you said to your friends that your favorite episode of a series was the one where the main character's infant son died because it was the hardest you have ever laughed, and being absolutely genuine in your answer.
lol I'm sure many of us have had similar conversations
I am so glad you made this video. I've seen every single bit of the On Cinema universe, from Decker to Dekkar to Tim's trial and everything in between, and I've always been discouraged in knowing how difficult it would be to get anyone else into it. At least I know I'm not alone now

On Cinema is absolutely Tim and Gregg's masterpiece. I love everything they do, together and apart, but On Cinema is singularly impressive to watch unfold. And holy hell, is it funny.
