  • The Trial of Tim Heidecker is just so great and so hilarious that i had to make a video about it. I started making this video as a sort of play by play through the whole trial, but I ended up wanting to talk more broad strokes so i left in only some of the specifics... so it ended up being a bit of both. Anyways, its more just an excuse to chat about some of my favorite moments and breakdown what i love about it, and what i find interesting. I do hope you enjoy and please consider subscribing!
The Trial of Tim Heidecker is a 4 hour and 48 minute long experimental comedy production set in the world of the web show On Cinema at the Cinema, that was put out by Adult Swim in 2017. - "Full coverage of The Trial of Tim Heidecker in which Tim Heidecker stood accused of 20 counts of 2nd degree felony murder against The Electric Sun 20."

So many funny bits. I agree it's one of the funniest things ever made.
      Some of my favorites:
When "Empty Bottle" is playing and Tim drums along to it at his table.
      Tim's closing statement.
      Tim's victory speech.

I sometimes wonder exactly how these random celebrities get involved. Like, were they just acquainted with someone involved with the show? Did the show reach out to them? Are they just fans and reached out because they wanted to be involved?
I always figured, with Awesome Show at least, that the comedian guests were just happy to get on a show that allowed themselves to be extra goofy. It's like the ultimate creative freedom.

I assumed it was some weird Adult Swim thing (ala The Broom Shakalaka) and found it absolutely hysterical. Happy, too, the TH-camr mentioned the aspects of Always Sunny. Being that Tim grew up and went to college in the Philadelphia area, I wonder if it had an effect. Not that one needs to be from Philly to appreciate IASIP. But when watching the Oscars episode(s), On Cinema really does feel like Always Sunny's stepson.

That took and SUV through a Christmas Parade in Wisconsin, and i swear i thought it was some sort of very elaborate sequel, so much of what Tim does, the way he reacts and the things he says is what Darrel Brooks did, from representing himself, object to nonsense, angry outbursts, stupid arguments, irrelevant questions to victims or family of them, its like insane, i recommend anyone to watch that thing.

No joke, this actually was my introduction to On Cinema. Watched all 5 days, and was delighted to find that the lore presented in the trial was an actual show. I've been a Gregghead ever since.

I love that Gregg said he'd seen a lot of medical movies, like "Panic in Needle Park".. that's a movie where Pacino plays a homeless heroin addict. It's not a medical drama. Love the running joke that Gregg doesn't know shit about movies.

I still remember stumbling across the trial on TH-cam and it being my intro to OCatC. I dropped the trial to go back and get context then started over and just was more and more amazed at this completely nuanced universe I had entered. Its still my favorite collection of comedic performance/content ever. "I'll fuck you up Mark!"

The reveal after 9 seasons that "Empty Bottle" is just an old Axiom song that's been made considerably worse is maybe my favorite moment from the whole series. Gregg's face alone while Qui Con Me is playing and Maryam and the other court attendees bopping their head. Then the contrast where everyone's disinterested except Tim and Gregg holding his head in his hand. I was cracking up for the full duration of both songs. Rossetti the Rat also has impeccable performance for the whole bit

Fantastic summary and totally agree. It's groundbreaking in a way that's quite hard to describe.
I'm only halfway through so you might mention this later in the video but the only thing that takes me out due to its absurdity is the 'hand transplant' section. Everything else is entirely believable....just about.
I also didn't know lots of it was improvised.

The Trial was my introduction to On Cinema as well. I had looked into Mark Prush's work after seeing him in Better Call Saul, and came across some video of him sitting in a courtroom in front of a flag. I was like "wtf, this guy has drama going on??" So I started watching and yeah, it took a while for me to realize it was a bit, from some thing called On Cinema. I explored further....and down the rabbit hole I went. Now I adore the whole OC universe although I have yet to meet one single person in the wild who has heard of it. 😅

I'm a big fan of Unfiction/ARG's and have been for some time. I feel like On Cinema At The Cinema goes completely unacknowledged as a fantastic work of Unfiction and can be argued to be in this same category. Multimedia, multi-faceted storytelling, active in character interactions with viewers through social media that often influence major plot points in the show, and an emphasis on creating a storytelling universe that is subversive to the point where it does feel like you are witnessing real people, and their real lives in this ongoing narrative. I think the only reason people might disagree with this is because 1) the creators probably have no clue what an ARG is, and 2) it doesn't play into a lot of the common troupes seen in ARG's like solvable puzzles, nor does it fit in the horror genre which many weirdly believe is needed to be considered one. Which is a really limiting notion imo. I think drifting away into other genres of storytelling with this type of narrative is actually kind of groundbreaking. I would love to see other people's thoughts on this idea, because it has been stuck in my mind ever since I got sucked into this several months ago.

as a long time fan of tim heidecker and gregg turkington's neil hamburger character and even saw some of decker (not knowing it was connected to on cinema) and while i knew of on cinema but it was like a whole thing and never had a jumping in point, but then for some reason--looking for something long to watch while playing ffxiv or something--i watched the trial of tim heidecker. ive been hooked and a proud gregghead ever since. also the on cinema timeline came out like a month after i much more manually trawled for everything lol rip
