I return, decided to try out some Fallout video ideas - let me know what you think! My comprehension of the lore, like with the Elder Scrolls, I'm sure will grow with time. Please enjoy!
The fact that the Stranger's son has a moustache and then a different game then Stranger gets one makes me think there's something passed down during the generations, and when one body gives out, the Stranger entity passes on to the next in line
16:15 The word “eldritch” is almost universally associated with H. P. Lovecraft and his works wherein he writes about supernatural gods of unfathomable evil and power. And given that there’s more than a few Lovecraftian references in Fallout 3 and 4, I think the guide is implying that the Stranger is either one of, or associated with, the supernatural elements of the Fallout universe like we find in the Dunwich building in 3 or The Secret of Cabot House quest in 4.
I don't like a lot of what Bethesda did with the lore, but I do like that they turned a goofy perk into an actually interesting character with lore and mystery. He has a son in New Vegas, and he has a connection with Nick Valentine that never really gets spelled out. Personally, I think he's the human Nick Valentine, or he's connected to him somehow. Something made Nick immortal, or maybe he trained a gang of killers.
I like the idea that the Mysterious Stranger is a mantle. Someone else suggested this, and it seems perfect. That would explain why it can be a man or woman in the original Fallout.
I like how in the past year or two you've spread out your content more and more not saying I don't love all the content but it's really cool to see you talk about different games
My theory for the mysterious stranger is they are a branch apart of vault tec for asset protection for their experiments and only the lucky get protection. When Cooper Howard is dropping his wife off at vault tec the 3 people see leaving the building wear a similar outfit to the stranger/savior. The Courier is just lucky to get Miss Fortune just like he's lucky to survive that bullet to the head. I'm hoping they reveal more information about them in fallout 5 or season 2, Lucy and Howard canonically have the mysterious savior perk too. Apparent leaks for season 2 is supposed to have the mysterious stranger/savior.
The two main camps on the MS seem to be that it’s either a title which gets passed on to different people down the centuries, or an immortal supernatural entity who is always “the same” in each game. There are variations on the theories for people who want to be more detailed, and evidence for both of those general perspectives, and against it. I personally tend towards the former and believe each MS in each game is a different person, but I do think there’s a supernatural component to him. The best analogy I can draw is the Gray Cowl in Oblivion when it was cursed, because the cowl would then cause its wearer to disappear from the historical record and be a complete enigma, even to their own loved ones. I don’t know whether that universally recognisable fedora is what causes this hypothetical curse, but there are definitely stranger things in Fallout lore to be sure. And if that was the case, it would explain why an otherwise ordinary father from the middle of nowhere was one of the Strangers in New Vegas, that he came into possession of the title - or the hat - and it caused him to disappear and assume the mantle of the MS, as it makes considerably less sense why an immortal being of unknown power would chose to become a deadbeat father at a random point for no discernible reason. On his origins at least, I feel very certain that’s the explanation. But how did he acquire the mantle, hoe was he chosen and why do the Strangers protect the player characters to the exclusion of everyone else? These are questions I can’t even begin to answer.
Well the answer to the player character thing probably goes about as far as we just simply have the perk, and fallout lore can be pretty meta and fourth wall breaking so I'd bet that's the actual in universe reason.
Mini theory: The Stranger is the actual personification of Death (he strikes randomly, those he touch die instantly, see what I mean?) and he chose the many protagonists to attach to because they should all have died several times
@@Fizhy Thanks! It's a thought I've had in the back of my head for a while, and considering everything we see the stranger do through all the games it sorta makes sense
@@Longshanks1690 maybe the Stranger (Death) killed the Drifter's father in the hospital at the same time he was born, and as such the baby Drifter saw the Stranger and thought he was his dad
@@AngelOfDC But the Drifter talks about his dad as someone who was present in his life for a few years and then left, even talking about how strained his parents marriage was. That doesn’t sound like someone he saw once and misinterpreted as his father.
My headcannon is, the mysterious stranger is a men in black type character. Although I find his style of dress eerily similar to that of the vault tec rep you meet in the opening, and later in goodneighbor. Perhaps he is the product of vault tec making some kind of super soldier, outfitted with advanced stealth technology similar to what the Chinese were able to create with the stealth suit. Perhaps vault tec is just the front facing cover for the true world government, poking the leaders of various countries into nuclear war in order to cause the breakdown of society. That would certainly explain the strange fixation the stranger has with only assisting the player character who always comes from a vault. They have a need to keep us alive by subtly helping us and intervening when nescesary because the vault dwellers of fallout in their canon decisions are unknowingly paving the way for vault tec to return from wherever they went.
This is pretty much identical to my headcanon in every way, right down to the Vault-Tec shadow government. Glad to meet someone else with similar ideas on the subjects! :D
I love Fallout lore and theories, so thank you! One of my favourite ever channels is ThenThapple, but he doesn't upload terribly often, so I'm always hungry for more Fallout mysteries lol
It's the distant far-future Nick Valentine from an age where a united manikind have discovered time travel, looking out for player for nostalgic reasons.
Would love to see you tackle the eldritch aspects of the Fallout universe. As for MS I hope Bethesda never gives us any concrete lore. It's pretty fun to speculate his existence and what or who he may be and why the hell he cares to help out some rando in the wastes.
Thank you for another phenomenal video! Your time, story telling and dedication to these mysteries and different lore stories have been nothing short of amazing. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there!
I always thought there was something a little off when traversing the desert to get to new vagas (in fallout new vagas duh) but especially the deathclaws, plus the old Erie music. Ugh gives me chills just thinking about it.
But that's literally not how Dr.Who works... Like yeah the actors change, but within the cannon of the show, he "Regenerates" basically healing himself into a different persona. It's like, how in a person pretty much every cell in our body has been replaced at least every seven years, we learn new things, our mannerisms and appearance and interests might change, but we're still the same person. He just does it all in an instant, and without our physical limitations.
I most definitely shall aim to do so, I like a good bit of Fallout on occasion. Need to figure out what's making New Vegas so laggy for me (I presume there's a mod if not a setting that fixes it but I am yet to apply my brain to that just yet)
I think in fallout 5 they should give us a quest to help someone capture him, aim at someone tied up and try to summon him. But when wr do he just shoots the quest giver and disappears
Either way, eldritch being with immense powers, long lived mortal man with powers or advanced tech, or a group of men. my headcanon is that he’s real, carries his magnum, and at least FO 3, NV, and FO 4 ones are the same guy, who before FO3 knocked up a chick in Montana making the Drifter, and at some point left him with a Magnum of his own and a guitar. MS then shows up to protect individuals like the players, people of importance, either with some higher sense or just a good judge of telling who’ll be historically important. And Miss Fortune is his Mojave counterpart.
I didn’t know about the Mark Twain thing and personally I gotta say I’m kinda glad that he didn’t go through with that story, my people would’ve torn that story to shreds because by definition the word Satan implies moral opposition so to say that it (referring specifically to the one known as “Satan”) or spirits like it lack morality are inaccurate to the source lore where the whole reason Satan loses his name and becomes well Satan is because of a lack of moral perfection. But I’m babbling at the end of the day a story is just a story I just had the thought and wanted to share.

The greatest mystery of all…
Why did H.P. Lovecraft choose such a poor name for his cat?
egregious racism even considering the time period
