      Eric M it matters what you want with a pet blue tongues are great very similar to bearded dragons if you get a northern , Indonesians need more humidity. But a Argentine need too much room and are too big if I had the room yea I would keep one . I have my bearded dragon in a Viv over the gallon size but if I could I would double it because they can and will use the room.

    It depends what you’re looking for. Easier? Leopard gecko. More interactive? Bearded dragon. Leos are cute and definitely handleable, but they don’t bond with you like a beardie.

      You may disagree but I think Turtles are easier to care for than Bearded Dragons. Only saying this because I had a Bearded Dragon who passed away suddenly at 9 years old showed no signs of sickness the day before. Unless 9 is considered the end of the lifespan for Bearded Dragons? But yea my turtles so far have outlived my Bearded Dragon as they are 15 years old.

    • @con_the_artist6823
      @con_the_artist6823 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A beardie's lifespan is 10-15 years and a turtle's is around 30 years. Either way, you're going to find it easier to take care of something you like better. I find it easier to care for dogs over cats, cause I like dogs better so I don't mind putting in that extra work it takes.

I kind of think and feel that the bearded dragon would win. Great video as always - loved your expert doctor 😂

      You're going to love them. I had them as kids and I have one now, his name is Geek. They are sweet critters and easy to care for. Well easy if you've done your research which it sounds like you have. The one thing I didn't think of with my first one is finding an exotic vet in my area, and if you don't have one in your area how long you'll have to drive if you need to. Chances are they won't need a vet if you care for them properly but anything can happen with animals(leopard geckos tend to just walk off your hands or whatever they're walking on so if you aren't careful you can end up with an injured gecko on your hands).

    I originally had my leopard gecko in a 40 gallon tank, she rarely came out from her hide, was eatting but didn’t really seem to have the best time. My brother in law found a 20 gallon front opening terrarium and I moved her there, personally I think it made her very happy as I’ll now see her exploring once in a while, I’ve got both and though I’d rather my beardie I always look forward to seeing my leo coming out at night

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend upgrading her to a 40 gallon again. As long as there’s plenty of clutter and plant coverage (and not too much open space) they should do fine in a 40 gallon. Covering three sides of the enclosure can help as well. Give her plenty of time to adjust to the change. A 20 gallon long is only the bare minimum, 40 gallons or bigger is ideal.

  • @spikezilla54

    I've had my leopards learn when it's feeding time by snapping my fingers three times rhythmically. Once I start, they all immediately spring up and come running to eat. My newest set of hatchlings are starting to pick it up as well. it's the most amazing thing to watch them process what was once an odd sound that either startled them or broke their focus to then be a sound they get excited for. Also I'll challenge them by having them chase their prey down on the floor in my room or with tongs in their enclosure. One of my females learned she can cut the chase short with a quick sudden lunge forward which covers a decent distance. Others would jump up and snatch it from the tongs is my hand which sometimes results in them trying to take my hand with them. On occasion I'll have to move them around or not snap at all because they'll get frenzied and all close in at once. When that happens, one will grab the prey before another and that would get upset and bite at the one who grabbed but so far no one gets seriously hurt but the biters aren't rewarded. Feeding aside I'll watch them just lounge around but not sleep, dig up their substrate and terraform their enclosure, make small interactions with each other touching snouts against another, tail wagging when a male gets happy with one of his girls. The list goes on, I Love my guys.

    My bearded dragon's personality makes all of the hard work worth it.
    Side note: fun and personality are worth a lot of points with humans too. That's how I ended up with my boyfriend who is also difficult to maintain. He avoids vegetables too.

    I started by wanting a bearded dragon, but ended up with a uromastyx, however, they sold me a sick one. I took him back to the place I bought him so they could take him to the vet, well he ended up dying. I then went back to get a bearded dragon, and this time I ended up with an Indonesian Blue Tongue skink, love her, she is awesome, but she just sleeps and lays around, unless it is a feeding day. I can take her out and she is fun to hold and watch. Same time I got the blue tongue skink, my 23 year old daughter got a leopard gecko, he is cool, my daughter loves her Leo! I still wanted a bearded dragon though. WELL, I finally broke down and found a baby on craigslist, I have had my baby bearded dragon, Stripesy, for just over a week. He is so much fun. I have him in a 40 gallon breeder tank, and realize I need to get him a bigger enclosure in the next year. What will I do with an empty 40 gallon? I understand now how people who own reptiles end up with so many!!

    I feel like the debate of which is better really comes down to personal priorities. If personality/ behavior is at most important and space least important, bearded dragon is a better fit. For me, it's enclosures and heating that are my biggest priorities, so Leopard geckos are my pick. I recommend getting both at some point since their care is so different. I have Leopard geckos already (4 of them, 1 wild coloring and 3 fancier morphs) but my next goal in terms of owning a reptile is the bearded dragon.

    If you want a smaller beardie (with smaller enclosure) you can get a pygmy bearded dragon (Rankins dragon).
    You can also buy pellets for bearded dragons as part of the diet.
    As for food it is an advantage that you can buy part of the food source (greens) at the supermarket. Especially as adults beardies/rankins eat a lot less insects.

I was living in a small apartment with a roommate mate and needed something that could live on top of my dresser, because that was the only space I had for a reptile. They also didn't have all the crazy heat and UVB requirements. So, yeah. 7 yrs later, I still have my leopard gecko Nessie. Still love her. But now I'm living on my own and my collection is growing. Hii! I had this question for quite a while now. I was searching for the Arcadia Mix Substrate that you use but where I livr we don’t have any of these. I use coconut fiber for my gecko, Sunny, but I am getting a new tank for her soon and I was thinking about maybe going on natural substrate. I watched your videos about the best and worst substrates and I don’t wanna use a repti carpet or paper towels. Is there a way that I can make a good substrate by myself? I found many people making natural arid substrate and I believe this might be a way to get a good looking substrate for my gecko...so my question is: can I use an arid substrate mix recipe for my gecko? Are there any risks of impaction? Is it safe? Ps: the substrate that I am looking to make is usually made of play sand, top soil, dead leaves and coconut fiber and husk.

    I think it would be great if you did a video on spider ball pythons, enigma leopard geckos, and jaguar carpet pythons to educate people about their neurological issues and why people should not give their money to people who breed them

  • @lizrasper1213
    @lizrasper1213 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I would have to agree with you that leopard geckos are the easier better first pet lizard! However I will say its nice to be able to just make my beardie a salad as opposed to keeping feeders alive and gut loading them and they cost more than a $1.50 bunch of collared greens at the store thats going to last for two weeks. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I also have an idea for another video you could do! I was hoping you'd cover these in your small snakes video, but you didn't, could you make a video about African house snakes? I am super interested in them, the are a smaller snake, come in different color varieties and are technically a colubrid but I love how their triangular heads and buggy eyes are more python like.

    Can you do a video on Angolan pythons vs ball pythons? I've always loved how bp's look, but tbh the fact that they're soo common just kinda puts me off a little bit for some reason. So would it be much harder to get/ keep an Angolan instead?

    Hello! Which would be appropriate for a classroom pet (1st grade)? We tried a bearded dragon from Petsmart and it was sick and passed :( I did my research and cared for it properly but not even medicine could save her. We miss her dearly. Time has passed and now I am considering a leopard gecko. I would just like your input/advice. thank you for making these videos!

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bearded dragons are more expensive, higher maintenance (particularly their diet), and require a much larger enclosure. Leopard geckos are lower maintenance, but can drop their tails if they’re grabbed. They can be more skittish too. Make sure they handle them gently and with supervision (although I’m sure that goes without saying). Keep in mind that there’s loads of misinformation and outdated information online. The website reptifiles has great care guides for both species. Definitely don’t buy animals from PetSmart again.

      @@WickensWickedReptiles I am two months into owning my first beardie. The care and set-up differences are pretty stark. Yet, what is lost in the objective things like lighting, enclosure and heat requirements etc are the sheer joy of owning.
      Look at your previous top 3 lists of less likely to bite, fun to hold, and fun to watch. If I'm not mistaken, the beardie topped all of those lists.

      I jump in to beardie care. My youngest wanted one and we found a local breeder at a reptile show and took a full year researching and getting a complete enclosure set up. My only regret is that I didn't start my dubia colony earlier. Love my beardie, she rides around in my purse doing errands and is a total couch potato when we hang out.
