We love a human who has no problem admitting he was wrong about something in the past. Opinion is often fluid and it's okay to change your mind.
I know a lot of people start out with beardies though and I'm glad you've talked so much about the potential down side for those considering one as a first reptile.

You literally are probably one of the only people that I have watched or read about etc. that actually explains the details about beardie care and it's not just simple beginner pet like the others you have mentioned but also they are a pretty easy reptile to keep as long as you are fully aware of their care that is necessary for their health it's not just extra stuff that they will be okay without. Honestly, I really appreciated your criticism of beardies. They're amazing animals and definitely worth it, but there aren't enough reptile personalities warning people about the potential drawbacks. They're worth the care if you can handle it, but there's a learning curve with these guys and for most beginner reptile keepers, there's a general consensus that its not a big commitment and so many don't bother to look into it. The result is a lot of semi-neglected dragons because a lot of people don't know any better. In addition, there are so many inbred animals that are susceptible to succumbing to Adenovirus and that can end up being a HUGE burden in vet bills and daily care. I think they're wonderful, but having dealt with several poorly bred and severely ill beardies, I'm pretty jaded over the issue and glad to be caring for my new Hognose 😊. My wonderful beardie and I are hanging in there but I spend all of my time caring for him rather than enjoying him, which is a shame.

From what I’ve heard in my beardie groups, the issue with mealworms is the keratin levels are higher compared to other typical feeders and they have trouble digesting it. I just avoid them as a just in case, but that’s what I’ve been told by people that know way more than I about them

6:22 It’s correct that mealworms won’t eat out the inside of the beardie, that’s extremely unrealistic, however mealworms have a lot of chitin in their exoskeleton, which is hard for beardies to digest. It’s not recommended to feed mealworms to young bearded dragons, and they should only be fed to adults occasionally

Great video mate may I suggest that either in the proposed beardie care guide OR a separate vid you explain the importance of the UV strength particularly with reference to Ferguson zones which I have found invaluable regarding keeping my beardie as it has proved to me that it's best to swap even the Arcadia 14% dragon lamp 6 monthly (recommended yearly) and the difference in the beardies behaviour is clear by which I mean it explains the need for the correct UV index at different heights within the vivarium keep up the great work 👍

I found a super cool trick with the Bearded Dragon food! I use the small food processor like you but I put the food into ice cube trays and freeze them! I pop one out in the morning, run lukewarm water over it at bam! Put it on top of his lettuce with his calcium and vitamin powder.... you can make bunch in advance, make separate fruit cubes, veggie cubes AND you can even freeze lettuce! I had some lettuce that was starting to wilt a little so I stuck it in the freezer and it worked like a charm! It works even better with fresh lettuce 🥬 that way you can stock up and not worry it’s going to go bad! And before any haters say anything about the freezing process, my Bearded Dragon care... I worked for Dr. Doug Mader for 15 years (any reptile person should know who he is!) And my Bearded Dragon is in perfect health. These aren’t shortcuts! But they do work!

I've always heard these sets of figures when it comes to feeding frequency of Bearded Dragons:
      Hatchling: 100% insects 5 times a day *or* 100% insects 3 times a day
Juvenile: Gradually add veggies, feed 3 times a day *or* Gradually add veggies, feed twice a day
Adult: Always give veggies first, then insects, once a day, occasionally a rodent(like once a month or less), and *if* you give them a rodent, don't feed them the next day to avoid getting an obese beardie.

I have a few reptiles, my first was Speedy, my red ear/ yellow belly slider turtle hybrid. He recently turned 8 years old, I got him as a hatchling. I've been hesitant about beardies... Have heard alotta cons... After watching this video I'm going to do a little more research, I'm seriously reconsidering. They aren't just cute but those lil guys are so smart!

Question; would you ever consider doing a list of Australian reptiles? I know that the folks down under have a strict exotic reptile ban and so only have access to some natives.

Dandelion greens! Grow them yourself in a bag or box on a windowsill. Seriously, hardly anything could be easier to grow, and a lot of dragons that turn their noses up at mustard and collard greens will LOVE dandelion greens which make a great staple green for them!

  • @naou4030

Great video, but Kale is actually a good staple green, the calcium binding thing is a myth; i wholly agree though that variety is key- but i think sometimes dragons get picky too haha it's very hard but definitely worth it

We've had two dragons for a couple years now. Wouldn't trade them for the world. Amazing little creatures.
They have completely different personalities. They are very curious and do not like being stuck in their tanks all day. They have learned their way around the house and each has their favorite napping spots and window viewing spots, which is their favorite thing to do, they like to see what's going on around them. Of course I can't keep them out nearly as much as I'd like because they really do need their light. We built them an outdoor enclosure for summer and they love it.
Way more work then I ever thought but really not that bad at all.
The worst thing about them is that they can not be together as they will almost instantly go into full battle mode... Both are large males.
If you ever get one please do not just drop it in a tank and leave it. They need interaction and stimulation, some form of enrichment.
Like we don't just give them a super worm we make them hunt down and run for their treat. They have amazing eye sight and will see a little worm 20+ feet down the hall. They rush up and they go into stalker mode like a cat and then pounce. It's so cool. Love em.

I got a beardie named Monster when I was 10 and she passed away when I was 22. She was my absolute favourite animal I've ever had. I loved her so much and will always adore beardies because of her.
She would follow me around the house and always wanted to curl up and sleep in my lap. ❤️❤️

Beardies are absolutely on the list of reptiles we'll be adding to our collection. We just added a male dumerils, (so now we have a pair!!), and a hognose. Fingers crossed a bearded dragon will be here soon too! And I mean, I'm already making salads for my redfoot tortoise every day, so what's one more mouth to feed?!

I just watched an older video of yours and every time you talk about size of enclosures I think to myself: "man that is tiny." Is it just me or are terrariums in Germany generally bigger? E.g. I keep my colubrids in terrariums 1.2m x 0.6m x 0.8m that's about 150gallon. What sizes do you (community) keep your reptiles in?

So I really really want to get one. I have had an Iguana in the past and it lived a very long time and got really really big. I'm kind of experienced. I think I'm going to get one of the 110 gallon tanks you recommended from reprile kages. Also looking into getting a red or sunburst beardie. Really excited!

Dandelion greens- Best calcium to phosphorus ratio and free if you don't use pesticides in your yard. The flowers are ok to give to them to or any omnivorous/ herbavorus reptile. Also Arcadia t5 uvb bulbs, they last 12 to 14 months. Worthwhile and great uv output, i use the dragon 14% at a distance of 16 inches. Works great for me, hope this helps others as well

You are completely right, they can be amazing! My main problem with them is not really about the beardies (because they are great) but about the general view of them as really easy beginner reptiles. It just makes me so sad to see all the malnourished bearded dragon with metabolic bone disease, all because their keepers were told that they are super easy to care for...

I Love my bearded dragon Leviathan , he’s 9 years old and 2 feet long . He started out the size of my pinky , he loves it when I play flute and swim in our bath tub . My single biggest complication was feeding him when he was so small , the crickets would chew on him 😳 ! He eats BokChoy , Romane lettuce , dried meal worms , earth worms , horn worms and lots of other greens . UVB lights tend to last about 9 months to a year . When there uvb lights are depleted their skin tends to mound up or climb to acquire more light , similar to a succulent or cactus that doesn’t get enough sunlight , they get leggie . Safe Substrate is a small list , I decided to go with plain tile in the end , he also loves his stuffed puppy dog to sleep on at night .

Dude, I feel ya! My wife and I were splitting up during this BS COVID19 thing....well, 1 week into it...she says my son wants a bearded dragon. I begged her not to bcuz I was being left with not only a bearded dragon (2 month old juvenile). But 2 min pins (dogs) and 1 cat while they were responsible for “themselves”. And since I’m an animal lover. I wasn’t gonna let Sub go waste (SUB saddam Usain Bolt) his full name lol.
It’s been a ride let me tell ya. But since my wife and son doesn’t seem to need me anymore. This little guy does. And he has been a godsend. I call him my mini alligator bcuz he’s a typical dark green/grey color.
I rock him to sleep each nite. He’s gone from gut loaded crickets to an addiction for super worms. And he went from eating three meals a day of greens (collard) to barely eating any right now. I’ve introduced kale, turnip, red cabbage. And finally went back to collards and he seems to eat a piece here and there. At one time he was even eating a piece of red papaya 3 times a week. They are very difficult as a first pet. As are min pins for a first dog. So I’m up to the challenge. He’s very sweet. I have tons of pics that would melt your heart. But the fact that I spend time with him is the most important. You can “keep them alive” by doing the bare minimum but I Love my animals and this guy, Sub, is no exception. Find what works for u...and roll with it, like the guy says. It’s nice to foster the growth of something so fragile. Especially these days
