How to replace a 2015 Buick Verano cabin air filter

  • Here's my very unprofessionally recorded and edited tutorial video showing how to change your cabin air filter in a 2015 Buick Verano (or Chevy Cruze).
Please forgive the bad audio and video quality, as I shot the video with my phone in one hand, and tools doing the work in the other. Also, I'm not a mechanic, so please excuse my weak verbiage.

A couple of people have mentioned in the comments, but I would like to take the time to emphasize: any time you have any concern of electrical danger while working on your vehicle, you should disconnect the negative wire from your battery terminal BEFORE any following steps are taken. This tutorial requires you to remove and set aside (but not disconnect) the airbag from beneath the glovebox. While this will not inherently cause the airbag to deploy, the risk is far less if your battery is disconnected.

My passenger side airbag is off/ disabled. Not sure if that's because I ride solo or it was never engaged. I've never had to remove airbags in the past so thinking there must be a way around this. GM seems to have made this model quite difficult for owners to perform routine maintenence. My battery was a bear to get off but every piece is crucial and necessary for vehicle operation.

So stupid that automakers make something like this difficult. Taking out an airbag to change out a cabin air filter?!? It literally takes 30 seconds to change one on a Honda Civic. Don’t get me started about the oil filter. Thanks for the video! It was needed!

I've been putting off replacing mine. When I turn on the AC is smells horrible. Thanks for the step by step instructions. This really looks like another fine example of the engineers hating on the mechanics that have to maintain the vehicle.

I really appreciate this instructional video. I'm not mechanically inclined but you did a great job of laying out the step-by-step process and I was able to get the job done. This was probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my whole life, I'm a big guy, and I heeded your warning, but I was super proud of myself when the job was completed. Thank you so much. This is by far the best video on this topic (even 4 years later). I have had to refer to this a couple times. Surprisingly, the Regal from the same year as my Verano (2015) takes half the time and is easily half as complex.
    Notes:
    - Always disconnect the battery (negative cable); You may have to run through the window down/window up security routine afterwards but much better than eating an airbag while you are bent over backwards under the dash
    - Long socket extensions are really helpful for the 7 mm glove box hex head screws
    - Find the deepest 10 mm socket you have for the two airbag nuts
    - Depending on your build or VIN, you may need T15 Torx screwdriver for the screws under the glove box (vs. T20)

@bammerbiff1621 wished I had read your comment before doing it. I did remove negative cable. Got the window message. Was hoping it was security. Google showed it was low voltage issue but people had it as ongoing issue. I checked battery voltage and it was 12.15 after starting and few minutes running. Running shows it's charging at 14.6. I put the charger on it for a bit and will check in the morning. My policy is to replace battery every 4-5 years. Checking records this one is 7 years.

Aaron, thanks a million. I had a similar experience with my girlfriend's 2014 Buick Verano. She took it to Canadian Tire in Quebec to have the cabin air filter replaced and they said, "sure thing!" After fiddling around with it for 10 minutes they buttoned it back up and gave it back to her with the old cabin filter intact and said they couldn't do it because it was too complicated. So I now have the daunting task of being a hero amid a flock of goats. Your video will help me avoid being another "goat".

Those torx are not t10 on my 2013 but rather t15. Possibly academic for me. I did remove them. Then I found the 3 clips that they screw into on the floor. The shop that did it first time didn't look up the procedure. Never removed the air bag. He removed the 4 7mm head bolts and just yanked the box until he broke the plastic off that those clips mounted onto.

@@prescher13 I agree. When I pulled out the glovebox after removing the 10mm nuts, the 3 torx screws, and then the 7mm bolts, I found that someone (presumably a careless/ignorant tech at the Buick dealer where this was purchased as a certified used vehicle!) apparently failed to do that. It was clear that the glovebox assembly had been yanked out after removing only the four 7mm bolts. The 3 plastic flanges at the base of the box that hold the clip nuts for the torx screws were completely broken off the base of the glovebox assembly. On top of that, the damper on the right side of the box was broken off from its attachment point. Luckily, that's only an $11 part on eBay, and I think the glovebox assembly is held in adequately by the four 7mm bolts.

I'm glad it's held in adequately. If anything, (probably) the worst that could happen would be an annoying vibration sound at higher speeds.

So my AC isnt blowing at all, it will blow once in awhile, and it is cold. Could this be a cabin air filter issue

Hmm. I'm not a mechanic, but that doesn't seem like an air filter issue. It could be something in the climate control switches, possibly even a loose connection somewhere in the a/c circuit itself. Hope this helps!

Well I dont need to replace my filter, at least not right now. I was was wondering though if these instructions would help me retrieve a necklace that has fallen down the vent of my dashboard. It went down the center vent but slightly more on the passenger side. I'm desperately searching for a video that can show me how to get in there. Yours was the closest one. I just dont want to do it and I'm not even in the right area. I've got a 2013 buick verano. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated. Have a blessed day.

I wish I had an answer for you. Unfortunately, this is as far as I've gotten in dashboard disassembly in this vehicle. I have since traded this car in and no longer have it. Best of luck to you, though!

My 2015 sinks so bad when the heat comes on. Prior owners had a little dog in it. I ask the local GM dealer to change it when they changed they oil. They had not seen this before 🤦‍♀️ Now I have to schedule an appointment so a “tech” can do it, because of the air bags having to be dropped out.🤷‍♀️ They could not quote me a price. 🤨 They did say the dash board has to come off. 😡 I’m wondering if I should try this on my own 🧐

      Thanks for the comment!
The thing is, I don't know that the thing I called an "airbag" is actually an airbag. I clarified that in a footnote during the video. It may be an airbag, or it may be something less crucial. I don't recommend you perform this replacement if you're not confident in yourself, but I know that it was not a very difficult task, despite having to remove that component.

And I thought removing the computer to get to the battery on my Equinox was dumb. I mean it is but at least it’s fairly easy to do.

Does this work on a Buick Verano Sport touring? Or should I go in under the hood not glovebox.

Hi! Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to that question. I'm not certified through any auto dealer or garage. I just needed to change it on my own vehicle and thought I'd record the "how-to."
