    We just had a 2001 bmw 525i come in with this same issue. On top of the engine, under the cover, the wires were broken. Looks like people didn't know how to put the cover back on and broke them. Customer went to another repair shop and spent over $400 to replace the oxygen sensor. Found your video and repaired the wires in 10 minutes. Customer is so happy I happened to see your video. Thanks!

    @Nathan's DIY Garage I have a 1998 e38 740il. I've been tuning it up a little here a little there. I've owned it for about 2 months now. When I bought it it would have a little shake every now and again. Eventually it became constant. Recently I put 8 new NGK-R plugs in it and it ran perfect for about 10 mins. Then it started to have a little engine shake again but worse than before. I checked the codes and they were for the 2 postcat o2 sensors and the passenger side precat sensor. I got 4 working oem sensors off of a wrecked but running 98 740il. Installed them all and reset the codes. I pulled the plugs out and the drivers side were lightly frosted and the passenger side were fouled and black. I now have p0130 as the only code and I put my old bosch platinum +4's back in it. It runs smoother than the single prong ngk-r's but the mpg's are worse. Should I just swap one of my old precat o2 sensors back in it? And lastly is there anything else that would cause one side of the plugs to be fouled that wouldn't affect the other side other than the o2 sensor? Thanks. Love your videos.

    When I saw the country local and the gravel pad just like my work area I said "I guess it isn't just me". I have a two car garage but it's full of tool chests and engines. Both my sensor #2 wire harnesses had the strange cuts in them with broken wires and I see everyday who is doing it. Squirrels and other rodents. Nice clear video.

    I also see small exhaust leaks or intake leaks that aren't properly diagnosed. Scanner will automatically tell you o2 sensor circuit. But I've fixed so many leaks because of customers or there mechanics going by what there snap on scanner says. When I can see the engine stumbles. Hear exhaust leak or tiny intake leaks BMW is notoriously doing this

    Great video. Yet I have an issue .
    I've done a tuneup and also changed the o2 sensor in my 94 cadillac deville and the check engine light still comes on. Sometimes after a mile or so while driving other times after several miles.
    I have no clue as to what it could be sense it's an older model car and uses the OBD1 tester which no one seems to have anymore.
    I've done the manual service check and all that comes up is the a/c as current .

    light maybe on for very different codes if its a sensor code you have to find out which one, car may have more than 2 . Some have a lot of those things. especially huge engines with lots of cylinders .make sure its a code for same sensor. Installing just 1 brand new sensor may trigger codes for other sensors . But if you keep getting code for same sensor it maybe bad or you contaminated entrance with some chemicals .
    There are lots of cheap aftermarket sensors that simply not good right from the start due to failure in manufacturing process. I would stay away from them. buy only OEM sensor from reputable source. Check your manual.

    When connecting those 4 color coded engine wiring harness into the O2 sensor connector, does it matter where each color wire goes in which terminal? If it does matter, then how can I find out where each color wire specifically goes into which terminal? Thanks!

    • @kurtwm2010
      @kurtwm2010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes it does!!!!! Find a wiring diagram for your car. The heater element uses two wires of the same color, white or black. The signal wire and signal ground are two different colors. Sometimes blue or blue striped. You should not be able to plug the sensor to the harness wrong, it goes in only one way... the correct way.

      Reading codes is where you start. Did you replace all of them? Both upper and lower. 4 if it is a V6 and 2 for the 2.7 4 cylinder. Upper sensors are A/F sensors and lower are oxygen sensors. 2 sensors per bank.
      If these codes are even for the sensors. Could be something totally different but still emissions related.
      Start by getting codes read and go from there.

    Just started video and you replaced a bank 2 o2 sensor prior and it still comes up? master GM tech for 35 plus years and you NEVER ever replace a rear o2 sensor because they serve no other purpose then to rat on you if there is an issue with the cats they are not used to run the vehicle at all simply a tattle tale sensor nothing more. They go off not because the sensor is bad but because the cat is bad or front o2 sensor as it compares the value of the front sensor and if there is a variance beyond specs it goes off. usually because front sensor is fouled or defective .. Always replace a front sensor and clear the code because it is a wear item and affects drivability and economy . never ever replace rear one as it only costs money. if customers vehicle and you want to be done in one service replace them in pairs with same brand as different brands have different values and cheap knock off china new front sensor can throw a code in rear simply because they don't match. rear sensors are a waste of money and with a tune can be removed altogether

    • @ytfeverguy8367
      @ytfeverguy8367 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this analysis. Like an idiot I replaced the downstream bank two rear o2 on my BMW x3 e83 with a china (ebay) unit. Had a bitch of a time getting the sensor out (needed a special extractor bit). Now the sensor circuit is not recognized or the heater circuit codes p0160 P0056. 150k mile car O2s could be replaced as per maintenance schedule but I am wondering if I had left the bank 2 rear alone and just done the upstream, if my code would have gone away (bank 2 lean 0174). I think I now I need to de-install the Chinese junk sensor and start fresh I guess? This can also be a wiring issue in the harness, a fuse perhaps. Could also be a vacuum leak completely unrelated to bad O2. Still guessing at this problem.
