Ugh I just LOVE this era of music, the early 90's. You could hear a bit of the 80's but still hear and see distinct sound of the 90's. And this message is so genuine.
I sometimes play this song 🎧 to motivate myself because the only person I could count on was just me. Even family can let you down. But not music. This song and a few others were my anthems to keep going through school, through infantry school, Iraq/Afghanistan, divorce, thoughts of ending it all, and even through raising my son alone. It’s a very endearing song for me. It holds its value and meaning decades later.
On mornings before kindergarten I would change into my uniform in front of the TV in my mom's bedroom. She always had VH1 on and I swear I saw this video every morning for a year straight. Nostalgia.
"The song is in two distinct parts. The first part is about the things I've lost faith in. It's quite easy to be precise about the things I've lost faith in - politics, media, science, technology, the things that everybody has, and yet I along with most other people have a great deal of hope, and a feeling that things will and can get better. So what do we place our faith in I can't define that as easily as I can define what I don't believe in anymore. So I haven't defined it, I've just said if I ever lose my faith in you, and "You" could be my producer, it could be faith in God, it could be faith in myself, or it could be faith in romantic love. It could be all of those things, I don't define it. I think it's important not to define it, because once you can define something it evaporates. I think it's important in this day and age when we are dictated to by music television what a particular song is about, that the old ambiguity that songs had can be retained." Sting was a schoolteacher for three years. During this time, he played in bands nights and weekends. His real name is Gordon Sumner. Concurring anecdotes have it that he got his stage name from a yellow-and-black-striped sweater he wore while playing jazz gigs during his early days in Cramlington, England, which made him look like a bumble bee. One bandleader started calling him "Sting" and it stuck. Sting has six children: two with his first wife, Frances Tomelty, four with his next wife, Trudie Styler.
Thank you so Much for the background info on Sting & your explanation of the song is pretty close to what I thought back in the day. I've always LOVED this song & Sting, sometimes this song makes me cry 🥰. Love & Light 🤗
Yeah, I've read this interview quote before. The statement that stands out to me is this: "Once you can define something, it evaporates." Um, what? I think Sting knows exactly what he meant by "you" and doesn't want to reveal it because it will alienate those who interpret the song differently.
These lyrics are amazing. Sting was brilliant here. For me, this speaks of faith in God. If I ever lost my faith in God there would be nothing left for me to do. I literally could not go on, and that is the truth. These lyrics have captured my truth.
You've totally missed the meaning of the song due to your religious hysteria (sorry, vehement Atheist). The line, "you could say I lost my belief in the holy church." He professes that he has lost his faith in everything, including god. So, if he loses his faith in his love, he has nothing left to lose, because that's the ONLY thing he still believes in. It's a love song and religious faith is used to conjure "blind faith" in this instance, not for god, but for his love.
@@rasoodocks880 He said Holy church not God. The video is pretty self explanatory alot of hidden messages if you watch close. He also showed disdain in his lyrics about everything in this world including relationships. I think its about God.
@@stephenvalastro5678 and where else but the holy church speaks of a Devine creator of the universe that just happens to be intimately connected to us humans above all else??!?!?! You really buy that story? The church is the only institution that mentions God. The world has moved on, 18th century stories don't fly anymore.
If the 1990s was the decade you are most familiar with, than you are likely to enjoy it the most. I felt the same way with the 1980s because I was born in 1982.
Few of the good from the 90'es - I dream of 90'es not music wise, because after the Berlin Wall and Sovjet collapse - music became beat driven and not by the lyric.. simple refrains took over..

Sting is one of the coolest artists in my generation 80s and 90s how can you not understand what music like this means to your soul and life that's memories.
Yes indeed, the cord progression is very well orchestrated in this gifted song. Gives me goosebumps and a couple of joyful tears. Without Jesus we become lost.
A couple of months ago, I use to like only The Police's songs, and I hadn't given to myself the chance of listening to Sting's ones as a solo artist. However, in a sunny Sunday afternoon, l listen to this song on the radio while driving, and it caught me since the first seconds. The mix of the arrangements and the lyrics was so beautiful that even made me cry. Then, I began listening to Sting's solo songs, and I recently had the chance to see him playing on live in my own country, Mexico 😆. Sting hadn't come to Mexico in several years, so I was present in a unique venue. I'm amazed to get caught by Sting's solo songs just before he came back to Mexico. I think it's not simple coincidence.
Awesome song to listen to with a young 20something year old woman with a bottle of Merlot Red wine and pizza! I am 60 now and beginning to enjoy life, as it feels this song is about what I just said! As well as more songs by genesis "Phil Collins" and smooth jazz fit in romantic mood!
God I love this song to death. When I first heard it in 93 I went absolutely bonkers. There's something about Sting and his style of singing combine that with the beat and you got a recipe for a master piece.
totally agree I was 16 at the time this song came out i kept playing it constantly I drove my parents and sister crazy with this song. I love it a lot childhood song of mine oh the memories
Yes, yes. I was in a laundromat once and this was playing on the television overhead. It must have been MTV. But the combination of the incredible music and the visuals put me in such a focused state of mind that I completely forgot I was in a laundromat.
Have been a decades fan of Sting, I look at this song differently now with maturity. He's saying he has no faith in Science, progress, the Church, no sense of direction, no belief in the political system, or military. Essentially a lost, faithless man, except for the "you"/significant other he puts his faith in. Being that "you", is a very heavy burden to put on someone you love, when you're a totally faithless, lost man. It's unfair. No 1 person is meant to shoulder the burden of a faithless, lost man. Just a thought/different perspective.
You cannot trust or put your faith in any other than Jesus Christ. He accepts everything -- all sins, sorrows and burdens. And you don't have to do anything in return but believe he died on the cross for your sins and was resurrected. Religion is evil.
Hard to believe this masterpiece never went to #1 on either the Pop (Top 40) or Adult Contemporary charts. March-April 1993. Best it ever did was #5 on both charts. If it were released today (2021), I don't think it would get any radio airplay at all. That's how much music has changed in 28 years.
Life "changes" with each passing time... People can change and may even fail or disappoint you... But, know that there is no shadow of turning in the Lord (James 1:17 KJV). He is the same yesterday, today, and forever more. Always put your Trust in the Everlasting God & pray for strength -- to show His Love to others, that they may know Him also.... as a Faithful & merciful God 🙏🏾
Con artistas como Sting nunca perderé la fé en la música. La letra de esta cancion es una auténtica maravilla del realismo social. Se puede perder la fé en muchas cosas pero en lo auténtico nunca.
I was born in 92' and this was the 1st MTV music video I remember seeing. This takes me back almost further than I can remember. This is probably the first song I really remember hearing.
This video is steeped in the esoteric symbolism and archetypes of the tarot. If you know, you know. Not only a phenomenal piece of songwriting and composition, it is multi-layered with the resonance of the video imagery. Absolute legend. ❤️
I heard this in CVS the other night. I thought the song was perfect for a late night cvs shopping visit. Nothing like hearing sting belt out high notes while strolling through the oral anesthetic isle 10 minutes before the store closes
Sting is warning, for what we are trusting now, it is realy or a fantansy: we need to query our selfs about that; one thing that we can trust for sure, it is to be certain, which we can trust in GOD; any men or women can fail, but Him does not fail: this is true!
I think these poetic lyrics describe how trust is the most is the most important thing in a relationship and if that's gone, the relationship is over. I especially love the line "every time I close my eyes I see your face" as it describes how you feel someone you love in "inside" your soul. Musically it's too. It's a magical song.
Agreed. He wrote it about his wife. The world could go insane with lies and manipulation and deception all around him, but as long as he can trust her, he'll be OK. Amazing that the lyrics are even more true today (2024) than they were in 1993.
I can listen to this song over and over. In 2024.

Ugh I just LOVE this era of music, the early 90's. You could hear a bit of the 80's but still hear and see distinct sound of the 90's. And this message is so genuine.

Jarski J. I'm somewhat of a music nerd so I try, lol! Thanks~
same here, some of this music made so much sense
I sometimes play this song 🎧 to motivate myself because the only person I could count on was just me.
Even family can let you down. But not music. This song and a few others were my anthems to keep going through school, through infantry school, Iraq/Afghanistan, divorce, thoughts of ending it all, and even through raising my son alone. It’s a very endearing song for me. It holds its value and meaning decades later.
I'm so in love with this song loved the police and sting
You got that right
Brave man ! Sweet too. My respect to you.
A truly motivation song in the deepest of times.
100% correct about music! Thank you for your service, and keep pushing on!
Still listening on my birthday 2nd September 2024 🎉
❤ happy belated birthday to you
On mornings before kindergarten I would change into my uniform in front of the TV in my mom's bedroom. She always had VH1 on and I swear I saw this video every morning for a year straight. Nostalgia.
My son still in the belly of me listened alternately Sting and Enya. Today is 17 years old and loves music. Maybe that's why? My nostalgia too.

That's a beautiful message.
Such a sweet story!

..I miss these times.
music was actually good!

I think it's important in this day and age when we are dictated to by music television what a particular song is about, that the old ambiguity that songs had can be retained."
Sting was a schoolteacher for three years.
This song will stand the test of time. They don’t make them like this anymore.
I always liked Sting. Grew up and 20 year later I think I have a crush on him and love this song, even more. Awesome song...
The chord progression is so unique and ingenious. A song from my childhood; it's so much fun transcribing it to rediscover its greatness.
Yes!
it really is an awesome chord progression

Check out Luther Vandross' "Believe In The Power of Love" another song with a beautiful unique chord progression with a climax at the end.
I just learned how to play this song. Yes the chord progressions are truly awesome and moving!
These lyrics are amazing. Sting was brilliant here. For me, this speaks of faith in God. If I ever lost my faith in God there would be nothing left for me to do. I literally could not go on, and that is the truth. These lyrics have captured my truth.
My thoughts exactly
@@stephenvalastro5678 sweet Music
You've totally missed the meaning of the song due to your religious hysteria (sorry, vehement Atheist). The line, "you could say I lost my belief in the holy church." He professes that he has lost his faith in everything, including god. So, if he loses his faith in his love, he has nothing left to lose, because that's the ONLY thing he still believes in. It's a love song and religious faith is used to conjure "blind faith" in this instance, not for god, but for his love.
@@rasoodocks880
He said Holy church not God.

The glorious 90s! Wish I could go back and just stay in that decade

J Thomas I don't think so
If the 1990s was the decade you are most familiar with, than you are likely to enjoy it the most. I felt the same way with the 1980s because I was born in 1982.
Me too.
Few of the good from the 90'es - I dream of 90'es not music wise, because after the Berlin Wall and Sovjet collapse - music became beat driven and not by the lyric.. simple refrains took over..
God is pleased by this song.
Always wondered if he was a believer...

Jesus my Savior King, my Love if I lose my faith in you there is nothing left to do.
... I woke up this morning thinking about how I would rather the simple life, don't need the fancy cars, luxury home, or multiple shoes of fashion... would search all over just to find that one pair that I choose & love over again and again. Lol.
Then while lying in my bed, I said to God - But if I ever Lose my faith in You... I would have nothing. 🙏🏾
Instantly, i remembered this song and searched for it. (Haven't heard this song in more than 20 years) 💜
➡ To be honest, instantly the song played in my head... Once I said those words unto the Lord.

He’s absolutely brilliant and exquisitely talented! What a combo!
As well as more songs by genesis "Phil Collins" and smooth jazz fit in romantic mood!
despite whatever folks think of Sting, the guy had a knack for writing great pop tunes, and unfortunately that torch has not been passed down.

There'd be absolutely nothing left for me to do if I ever lost my faith in my Lord and Savior....
Every GODDAMN time
God I love this song to death. When I first heard it in 93 I went absolutely bonkers. There's something about Sting and his style of singing combine that with the beat and you got a recipe for a master piece.

Yes, yes. I was in a laundromat once and this was playing on the television overhead. It must have been MTV. But the combination of the incredible music and the visuals put me in such a focused state of mind that I completely forgot I was in a laundromat.
Sting If I Ever Lose My Faith In You 1993
1993
I was 7 when this song came out and I loved it then but not as much as I love it now. A timeless piece of music history.
@@snarknado7469 Exactly.
Quite possibly the best mixed and engineered song EVER. Never fails to give me goosebumps...

OKAY
not true, you've lost faith
Hard to believe this masterpiece never went to #1 on either the Pop (Top 40) or Adult Contemporary charts. March-April 1993. Best it ever did was #5 on both charts. If it were released today (2021), I don't think it would get any radio airplay at all. That's how much music has changed in 28 years.
you mean gone downhill
God can Never let you down Ever but your children and spouse and family always do
Life "changes" with each passing time...
Beautiful
Con artistas como Sting nunca perderé la fé en la música. La letra de esta cancion es una auténtica maravilla del realismo social. Se puede perder la fé en muchas cosas pero en lo auténtico nunca.
