- Truly extraordinary! Swedish pilot lands Gripen fighter jet at full speed on public road
A road provides a runway for the Swedish Air Force's Gripen fighter jets. Swedish Air Force Gripen fighters practice the art of landing on a civil highway during a training exercise near Gothenburg, Sweden. Swedish fighter pilots learned how to land on civilian roads to give them extra flexibility in the event of a crisis. If an air base, airport or additional landing strip is damaged or unavailable, the JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft can land on roads specifically designed to accommodate fighter jet landings. Once landed, the Gripen uses a mobile forward arming and refueling point (FARP), which will release gas within minutes before taking off again. The Gripen is Sweden's premier multirole fighter, with reinforced landing gear that supports the aircraft high enough above the tarmac to prevent debris from being sucked into the jet's intake tract.

The problem with Gripen is that they don’t have a lot they’re very few Gripen’s in their inventory. Meanwhile they have thousands of F-16s throughout the world.

Road bases has been used since the 50s. The first was called Bas 60, and the most recent Bas 90. Was used all over Sweden up until the they were decomissioned around 2000.

This is a translation issue from "full fart" to english... "full fart" in Swedish means many things, but in the context of the video, it is about landing the plane as quickly as possible and has nothing to do with the speed of the aircraft... as a pilot you need to nail that to perfection so that all the re-arm/refuel etc goes as quickly as possible.

They will not land at full speed but at the above minimum landing speed, because if they land at full speed I doubt if that landing gear can hold, it will break upon touching the ground. Nice aircraft by the way, this is one aspect of Gripen that I admire, it can land on roads without the need of drag chute or portable arresting gear system, it only needs 600-800 meters length to land which is quite a feat.

Both the roads and the Jets are designed for this. The roads in Sweden are usually not straight, High Speed Roads have less tight curves, but still aren't straight, except for portions of them being dead straight so that they can be used by the Jets. And the Jets are relatively small, simplifying things. One can in ways compare it to Aircraft Carriers and the planes they carry.
And it's been like this since at least the 70ies, true and tested.
There are pretty many emergency roads all over Sweden for use in wartime. Since the 1960ies ..peacetime they only train to land on the big safe roads

I have regularly driven on Swedish roads since the late fifties, and many stretches of straight roads are set up for airplane use. They have depots along these roads to service their planes. There are no posts or high structures along these roads and the forests are cut back to make very wide open shoulders.
@roarsand1930 I drove past them back in 1988 north of Piteo in my grandfather's brothers VW polo. They need to bring them to the Chicago air & water show & than up to Oshkosh Wisconsin for there airshow.

Nada tem de extraordinário. As estradas são excelentes e planas e eles vivem treinando esse tipo de coisa. Alemanha, Suécia etc E provavelmente as estradas foram construídas já prevendo essa possibilidade. Suécia tem quase o tamanho de Minas e Bahia e só 36 aeroportos. Precisava mesmo de alternativas

Att man landar ett plan i "full fart" kan ju också betyda att man landar det så snabbt det går... det vill säga vara så tidseffektiv som möjligt... och då har det inte med planets hastighet att göra utan snarare tiden det tar att landa planet. Die Landegeschwindigkeit des Gripen ist ca. 200km/h. Man kann nicht langsamer landen, sonst gibt es einen Absturz.

@@bjorreb7487 Lol, what I never said it did. Obviously the Draken and Viggen also were developed for the road base system (Bas 60 that then turned into Bas 90) but they are not in service anymore which the Gripen is (hence the comparison with the aircraft Finland has today).

@@henrikjorgensen1614 Bas 90 är avvecklat även om man återtar viss kapacitet nu. Ett antal baser sålda och mängder av kortbanorna är nu obrukbara (mitträcke och borttagna/övergivna flygplansplatser). Men att man börjat öva igen är strålande.
