Since I was a kid, I have loved A-10's. This is a great illustration of why: Wheels not fully retracted, horrible aerodynamics with a huge vent, armored belly, zero stealth, THAT GUN, and just loaded down with ordinance and still able to blow a million dollars in explosives 50 yrs later with no problem and catching it all on a GoPro just bolted on the bottom.. What a Beast!

I didn't know that was how the SDB racks worked. I thought they just gravity dropped like everything else. Wasn't aware that they actually eject the munitions then slowly retract to reduce drag. That is kind of cool. For those wondering this is part of the Nellis Test and Training Range(NTTR) and this is just north of Creech AFB outside of Las Vegas.

Unless it launches off a rail, everything needs to be ejected from ejector racks due to aerodynamic potential for munition collision with other munitions, pylons, wings, or the airframe. Give me a break... The F-35 nor the F-16 can replace the A-10 after watching this. No one has the payload, the hitting power, the loiter time and the mix of ordinance than the A-10; plus, those 30mm spent uranium slugs it spits out are compelling. Sure... it's not going out first wave. But as a mop up crew with the troops as a support (God knows the troops love and trust this machine {There's something to be said for troop morale}), we still need it in those eventualities and in lesser conflicts. Once we establish air dominance then the A-10s can come in and do what the others can't do. Period End. They keep trying to get rid of this jet, here is the proof it needs to stay.

Moreover, this platform can carry new advanced longer range weapons in development now.

This was not designed to survive a war of attrition even in its heyday.
The _daily_ losses were projected in the HUNDREDS in a conventional Seven Days to the Rhine Scenario against the Warsaw Pact.
In actual service it was the most shot down Coalition aircraft of the Gulf war.. many by shoulder-launched MANPADS and light anti-aircraft. Many that “survived” were write-offs.
In the face of such heavy losses they suspended A-10 operations until complete air supremacy was achieved. The F-16 flew more strike missions. The F-111 destroyed more tanks.

It won’t have that in a near peer conflict where airbases will be targeted by long range missiles constantly. And what I’m talking about is not the traditional CAS mission. I’m talking about leveraging and employing this weapons system in new ways with new weapons like longer range decoys or cruise missiles etc. You don’t know as much as you think you do Ivan.

The plane is rugged and doesn’t need perfect runways. It’s cheaper to operate and maintain while able to carry a ton of weapons. It won’t be fighting all by itself but should be used in combined air ops once all the enemy air defenses are toast.

I asked them what they thought about the AF retiring the A-10, thought I was about get my butt kicked. They all expressed the A-10 saved countless troops. Make no mistake, the A-10’s capabilities against ground targets make it indispensable in theatres like the Middle East. But if the use of small drones by both sides in Ukraine is teaching us anything, it’s that the A-10 needs massive upgrades or replacement to be able to counter those kinds of threats going forward. The ability to jam short range electronic signals, as well as hardening against attack for enemy jamming devices will be crucial in whatever they come up with.
    Also, dual Vulcans.

    • @michealdrake3421

The problem with dual vulcans is they'd need to add a third engine to the plane. The A-10 has two jet engines because that's what it takes to overcome the recoil from the Vulcan. If it only had one engine, the gun would push it backwards while firing.

The A-10 just needs to be replaced, it's sad because it's such a badass plane. But, the Russian and Ukraine war just shows us low and slow gets ya shot down. The A10 was built to fight cold war, technology lacking Russians. Frogfoots and Alligator attack helicopters have been getting shot down quite considerably. I personally think the F-15 is the only current serving plane that can replace the A-10, it has durability, and payload, and the speed to get out once it's done. The F-16 could nearly do the job, but I think it would be better to have more than one engine. Now if the F-16XL program was revived and up armored that would be a replacement.

3:54 Had no idea the small domb racks did a forced ejection like that. How slowly they retract is almost comical. 5:04 And I find myself wondering how often weapons knock into eachother on release, because that came pretty close to the JDAM

I’ve always heard the A10 is a plane mounted to a gun. They say the pilots have to fire in bursts because the recoil can stall the aircraft.

I love the A-10. It has awesome firepower and is still an asset to the military. However, it requires air superiority to do its job. Like in the Middle East. Once air superiority is accomplished, it sends one hell of a message to both sides of the conflict. It's pretty much over.
