This is a great illustration of why: Wheels not fully retracted, horrible aerodynamics with a huge vent, armored belly, zero stealth, THAT GUN, and just loaded down with ordinance and still able to blow a million dollars in explosives 50 yrs later with no problem and catching it all on a GoPro just bolted on the bottom.. What a Beast!
With the way inflation is these days they couldn't afford harnesses, so they duck taped him to the belly of the plane, it seems to have worked quite well.

I didn't know that was how the SDB racks worked. I thought they just gravity dropped like everything else. Wasn't aware that they actually eject the munitions then slowly retract to reduce drag. That is kind of cool. For those wondering this is part of the Nellis Test and Training Range(NTTR) and this is just north of Creech AFB outside of Las Vegas.
Spoilers: JDAMs and the laser-guided munitions are also "pushed" off. You can't really see them, but the bomb racks have a metal slug that push the bomb away from the rack, and are actuated by a shotgun blank!
Unless it launches off a rail, everything needs to be ejected from ejector racks due to aerodynamic potential for munition collision with other munitions, pylons, wings, or the airframe. My first reaction was that’s NTTR. Have been through there many times, as well as Edwards AFB ranges and UTTR.

This was back in the 80s when they were doing carriage and separation testing on the Hornet. We went to China Lake all the time, as well as Nellis, White Sands, and Eglin.

Give me a break... The F-35 nor the F-16 can replace the A-10 after watching this. No one has the payload, the hitting power, the loiter time and the mix of ordinance than the A-10; plus, those 30mm spent uranium slugs it spits out are compelling. But as a mop up crew with the troops as a support (God knows the troops love and trust this machine {There's something to be said for troop morale}), we still need it in those eventualities and in lesser conflicts. We've got several stationed at the military base near us (Gowen Field). They're constantly cruising to and from that base over our house, so it's always landing or just after takeoff, definitely not booking though. They always travel in pairs, often multiple pairs. When I hear them thundering overhead (they're much louder than commercial jets) I always try to take a peek and spot the second one or the next pair.
The A-10 absolutely has a place in a near peer conflict because after the first week of slinging all the silver bullets available, it becomes a conventional war of attrition. When all the Air Defenses have been vaporized, you need a weapons truck that’s is easy to fix and can fly from dirt roads. Moreover, this platform can carry new advanced longer range weapons in development now.
Everybody just likes how it looks and make up arguments to justify their love for a machine. The time has come. There are just so many flight hours you can put on an air frame.
This was not designed to survive a war of attrition even in its heyday. The _daily_ losses were projected in the HUNDREDS in a conventional Seven Days to the Rhine Scenario against the Warsaw Pact. In actual service it was the most shot down Coalition aircraft of the Gulf war.. many by shoulder-launched MANPADS and light anti-aircraft. Many that “survived” were write-offs. In the face of such heavy losses they suspended A-10 operations until complete air supremacy was achieved. The F-16 flew more strike missions. The F-111 destroyed more tanks.

It won’t have that in a near peer conflict where airbases will be targeted by long range missiles constantly. And what I’m talking about is not the traditional CAS mission. The plane is rugged and doesn’t need perfect runways. It’s cheaper to operate and maintain while able to carry a ton of weapons. It won’t be fighting all by itself but should be used in combined air ops once all the enemy air defenses are toast.
During some training i remember seeing and hearing a10s doing some training not too far from us. I love hearing that 30mm gun. I can sleep to that beautiful sound!

The AF has been talking of retiring the A-10 and replacing it with the F-16 or later the F-35, they are wanting the next shiny flying thing so the A-10 and the boots on the ground are paying the cost. A few years ago I was at a wedding attend by several veterans or active duty and a large number were Army or Marine. I asked them what they thought about the AF retiring the A-10, thought I was about get my butt kicked. They all expressed the A-10 saved countless troops. The AF just doesn’t care, they just want to spend money. BTW, I’m prior AF and loved every minute of my time on active duty, and I love the soldiers and devil dogs who go through hell and hope they always have the best CAS possible.
No multi-roll aircraft will ever beat this purpose built aircraft at what it was designed to do. Multi-roll aircraft can do lots of different things but will never excel at any of them. It would be like building a Formula 1 race car that could also haul semi trailers when needed. Long live the amazing and ground troop saving A-10 Thunderbolt!!!

Make no mistake, the A-10’s capabilities against ground targets make it indispensable in theatres like the Middle East. But if the use of small drones by both sides in Ukraine is teaching us anything, it’s that the A-10 needs massive upgrades or replacement to be able to counter those kinds of threats going forward. The ability to jam short range electronic signals, as well as hardening against attack for enemy jamming devices will be crucial in whatever they come up with. Also, dual Vulcans.
The problem with dual vulcans is they'd need to add a third engine to the plane. The A-10 has two jet engines because that's what it takes to overcome the recoil from the Vulcan. If it only had one engine, the gun would push it backwards while firing.
The GAU-8 is useless for almost anything other than killing friendly troops. The absolute last thing you want in a close support aircraft is unwieldy unguided munitions and something that will bounce off tank armour that’s designed to withstand 100+mm rounds.
The A-10 just needs to be replaced, it's sad because it's such a badass plane. But, the Russian and Ukraine war just shows us low and slow gets ya shot down. The A10 was built to fight cold war, technology lacking Russians. Frogfoots and Alligator attack helicopters have been getting shot down quite considerably. I personally think the F-15 is the only current serving plane that can replace the A-10, it has durability, and payload, and the speed to get out once it's done. The F-16 could nearly do the job, but I think it would be better to have more than one engine. Now if the F-16XL program was revived and up armored that would be a replacement.
Yes, they stay with the rack. Not really any other way to do it, as any retraction or cutting system could fail, and it really doesn't affect anything either way. Why introduce complexity where it is not needed.
I’m a weapons troop who loads those munitions on the a-10. The arming wire stays on the rack and we remove it once we do our bomb rack EOF (End of firing) inspection.
Reminds me of what I used to do in Kerbal Space Program. I used to attempt to destroy the entirety of the KSC with an A-10 and the BDArmory mod. Would also use some other mod to make it where I could see from the under belly of the A-10, much like in the video. It looked very similar to this! It's tons of fun! God bless the USA! 🇺🇸

I love the A-10. It has awesome firepower and is still an asset to the military. However, it requires air superiority to do its job. Like in the Middle East. Once air superiority is accomplished, it sends one hell of a message to both sides of the conflict. It's pretty much over.

Can think of very few scenarios these days where cluster bombs would be part of a load out, they all involve very sparsely populated mountain terrain.
Can you imagine if you could travel back in time and had one Warthog in WW2? Even if you deleted the JDAMs and Mavericks it would have changed everything.

I love the A-10. It has awesome firepower and is still an asset to the military. However, it requires air superiority to do its job. Like in the Middle East. Once air superiority is accomplished, it sends one hell of a message to both sides of the conflict. It's pretty much over.

That's nothing. Some of those pylons can carry 3 x bombs or 3 x missiles each when they're really loaded out.
