2017 Ford Focus RS - Maybe the best Ford EVER ! (HOT HATCH SERIES)

  • When you put 350BHP in a Ford Focus and give it four wheel drive the results are very dramatic ! The RS is an out and out drivers car and in this video I put it through it's paces and fall head over heels in love with it !
    A huge thanks to Todd and the guys at Hendy Ford Portsmouth for letting me drive and film the car. Your support is very much appreciated. They are both an RS and Mountune dealer so the perfect place to buy and then tune your Focus RS !

    Great report. I own an RS and I have had Focus and Fiesta STs. I have loved them all but, the RS is absolutely brilliant. I cannot find the words to do it justice and I cannot imagine driving any other car. The Focus RS is the best car I have ever owned. Long may it and me, continue!

    Totally agree with you on the heel/toe, with the top mounted gas pedal and the fact that it is mounted too far forward - heel/toe is very, very difficult. Nice review, as an owner of an RS, your points were all valid and I will add that after the break-in period (about 800 miles) the RS does get faster so your 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds was pretty good for a car with only 161 miles on it. Man, I really wish US models had those automatic door protectors... so cool!!!

    Nice video! Just a few pointers. I believe the Mountune 375 warranty friendly upgrade was only £899 last time I checked. Excellent value for what you get. It seems a lot more than 25bhp increase, as the torque figure has been increased massively - the difference is like night and day apparently. Also, for an extra £320, you can buy the 5 year extended warranty which covers everything that isn't a consumable. My magnetic grey RS is due in March, and I will be going for both of those. Watch the shell seats though, as you cannot have them heated, and they are not as comfortable or height adjustable - I am sticking to the normal seats for comfort. One last point. If you get another drive, you can put it into track/race mode, then manually set the suspension to the normal road setting. That is supposed to give the best feel/performance without shaking you to bits! A lot of people prefer that mode - by far the best apparently. Watch one of Fezza's latest videos where he tries this out. Thanks once again for an enlightening review!

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert. Thanks for such constructive feedback. £899 is a bargain ! I was told £1100 by the dealer so sorry about that. Good point about the shell seats. I believe they don't have the same height adjustment either.
      I've seen the Fezza video you are talking about but when I was with the car I couldn't remember how to do it. Hopefully Fezza and I are going to do a collaboration soon :-)
      Enjoy your new car. Good colour choice by the way :-)

    I'd love one of these cars Peter, all the power and fun of a hot hatch and all the reliability and practicality of a Ford Focus, a great all rounder and now with the very much needed all wheel drive. If I had around £35,000 to spend on a hot hatch it would be a tough choice between the RS and a top specced Mini Cooper JCW although on straight line speed the RS has the JCW licked on all counts is a Mini JCW more fun, what do you think Peter. Love this video look forward to the next one.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love my Mini Rob, and I love driving it...but for me the Focus is on another level in terms of performance and usability. That said, the Mini has a much better interior and maybe a bit more character. If I were to choose between the two I'd have a Focus and then take it to Mountune for the 385 BHP upgrade !!!

    Peter, you're a talented reviewer and as such, I benefited by watching. You were able to take us on an intro tour of the car's "meat," the axle and sport adjustments. Whereas Chris Harris just opens up with the car sideways (almost) in a ditch. :-). Can you describe your opinion on driving dynamics of the RS vs the 16-17 Golf R, what I have?

    I just test drove one! I agree 100% with your opinions. The speed at which an amateur like me can drive it confidently is ludicrous. Your comment on your i30N video about the Focus RS being "too fast" is spot on. I don't think there would be too many cars with significantly bigger price tags that could outrun it on twisty B roads in the wet. I have question marks about it's practicality and every day livability, but you don't really buy a car like this just to go to the shops.

    Oh yeah - Post Script: If you're going to drive hard on British A or B roads and you're undergoing a lot of direction changes, normal is NOT the way forward. You need a damped, heavier feel to the steering that you only get in Sport and track. Fezza did a good vid on the Phantom mode. Or mode 5. All the benefits of Track mode without the ultimate shock firmness. Check it out.

    Hi there really enjoyed the review. I see you have since driven both Honda Civic Type Rs the FK2 and the FK8. Apart from the advantage the Ford has with the 4 wheel drive how do these compare and which one would you pick. Thanks Richard.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough question that. The latest Type R is in a different league to the car it replaced so it's easy to choose between them. The Honda is a superb drive with a great feel and properly brilliant gearbox. It's looks are a bit full on and although I like them and have no problem driving a car that looks like that I'm not sure Mrs Petrol Ped would ! The Focus is a very good car, slightly more understated and it's performance is certainly more available thanks to the 4 wheel drive. I admit I would be a little worried about the engine problems that have been experienced by some owners. I would still probably go for the Focus though :-)

    For long journeys and everyday use is the suspension to hard? Does it need a comfort setting?
    A pity the suspension and traction settings cannot be individually changed.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In normal mode the suspension is firmer than a standard Focus but still compliant and very usable. Sport firms it up a bit but it's still OK. I like a firmly sprung car anyway so for me I could easily drive it in that mode all the time because you get the better noise from the exhaust. Race mode was very firm indeed. OK if you wanted a blast down a B road or on track but not for every day.
      You can still turn traction control off. It's just not possible to separate them in the pre-determined modes.

    You should hold off on final opinions until you can drive a car with more than 1,000 miles on it. The ecu limits boost and power output until the engine is completely broken in. Mine now has just under 6,000 miles and is faster by the day. The biggest challenge so far is to hit the gas in corners rather than letting off to let the system show you what it can do. You must drive it differently than your other cars to get the most out of it. Enjoy

      David Bouldin it doesn't say that. Just says drive slower for the first 1000

      My american Rs states only 75% available in the first 700 to 1000 miles.
      Since I put 1300 miles on it in the first 2 days bringing it home from Texas to Michigan I noticed a substantial improvement at both mile markers. Maybe yours are different. We had to wait more than 30 days for a reflash at port of entry stateside.

    Overrated imo. Took one for test drive. Incredibly sure footed but I did not feel it was that quick. A mechanic at local Ford dealer said there was some serious power train losses.
    Supposedly 350bhp at the flywheel but by the time it gets through to the wheels its more like 280hp. A well driven ST would keep up with it.
    I never did order one, went for the M140i instead. Nice.

    Fezza and Petrol Ped on the same page!! Yay. To be fair, it is a very unspecced car. No drop forged rims, no shell seats. Still looks lovely though. And naturally, it is a TOTALLY berserk daily driver. I love mine. Buy one. Now.

    Good video mate. Not sure about best Ford ever though, that's a big claim. I'm not a massive fan of the styling to be honest. Think it looks shit compared to the MK2 RS, I respect the new RS but I wouldn't buy one. I'd take a tuned MK2 over the MK3 anyday of the week

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matthew Parker Glad you liked the vid. A big claim to stimulate debate 😜 What about the RS500 Sierra Coworth or the Escort RS2000 ?! There is no doubt it is a very good car. It certainly has its lovers and its haters !!

      Yeah lol. Escort Cosworth is probably my fave followed by the MK2 RS. My cousin used to have a dream science tuned MK2 with over 450bhp was a monster and that 5 cylinder noise was awesome as well. I wouldn't say no to a new rs but don't think I'd buy one with my own money lol. Think they messed up by making it 5 door only and it doesn't stand out enough from the st for me. I bet it's great fun to drive though with the 4x4 now etc.
