In Hinduism, the concept of the "soul" is intricate, with different terms highlighting various spiritual ideas. While Atman, Jiva, and Jivatma are often translated as "soul," they each carry specific meanings. Atman: The true Self, eternal and unchanging, identical with Brahman. There is only one Atman, the ultimate reality. Jiva: The conditioned Atman, representing individual souls. Jivas are infinite in number and bound by karma, experiencing the cycle of birth and death (samsara). Jivatma: Another term for Jiva, emphasizing the individual soul’s consciousness within the cycle of rebirth. Jiva and Jivatma are the same.
There is not such thing as rebirth. Also there is no soul present in a human body. Soul is nothing but the state of self knowing. When you are capable of understanding yourself, you tend to become equal to your 'soul' or attain brahman. Not a single upanishad claims that there are individual metaphysical souls present in the body. We should remove these pauranic concepts from vedanta concepts when understanding these things.
@@NoThing-ec9km I got that but the whole concept of rebirth, cycle of life and death is not much supported by upanishads. They are primarily pauranic concepts, and has nothing to do with self realization.

Excellent summary! You have captured the essence of chapter 2 very well. You are right, chapter 2 is an overview of the teaching. Another summary comes in chapter 18 (the final chapter). In between, various aspects of the philosophy/ teaching are explained. Incidentally, your choice of Eknath Easwaran's book is an excellent one. He does (or rather did, as he passed a few years ago) write with clarity and can explain in terms that westerners can understand. I would suggest a few of his other books - like Passage Meditation, and the Mantram Handbook. Keep te Gita journey going! All the best!
Going well so far. You will form your own interpretation and the text will talk to you personally based on your own life circumstances, current knowledge and understanding. I will share some of my own insights on chapter 2 . Somebody shared a brilliant insight earlier on the difference between Atman, Jiva and Jivatman. When you say 'cultivate' the soul you are referring to Jivatman, the small self or little soul if you like. Atman, is the Higher Self or Supreme Soul. It cannot be cultivated, because it is already perfect and complete. The source of all being (sat) consciousness (chit) and bliss and joy (Ananda). The Jiva that transmigrates between lives cultivating virtue and wisdom is really the Atman in essence, so it is not the case that the Jiva is trying to obtain something that it doesn't have, but rather it is a case of realising what it already has. Krishna will later use the analogy of a dirty mirror, when the mirror is dirty the reflection seen in the mirror is murky. When we clean the mirror, the reflection is clear and distinct. Similarly, the journey of the Jiva through lifetimes of cultivating virtue is cleaning the mirror, bit by bit, until the true self or Atman is reflected. This is called purification of the mind (chitta suddhi) so essentially Jiva is just mind and purification and cultivation of mind is called yoga. Hence why Krishna talks about yoga as the means to realize the Self. Now let us talk about attachment. This is the most misunderstood concept in Indian/Eastern spirituality. We hear attachment is a bad thing and we must not let ourselves become attached to anything because everything is temporal and transient. This is also used to justify the concept of no effort. You cannot live a practical life like this. If you are not attached to your work and study, you won't get a promotion and good grades. If you are not attached to your spouse or partner, they will soon leave you. In the present context if Arjuna is not attached to fighting to win, he could lose this war. The real meaning here is further explained by distinguishing between the types of attachments based on their quality(guna) covered by Krishna later. An attachment can be tamasic, in the mode of ignorance and hate; rajasic, in the mode of passion; or sattvic, in the mode of virtue. The first two will produce binding karma and cause you to be reborn perpetually, but the last kind of the sattvic kind will liberate you from karma and eventually cause liberation. Being attached to virtue is not a bad thing. Reading spiritual scriptures, following your dharma, cultivating the sense and intellect, worship of the divine, meditation, mindfulness and positive thinking and habit etc are good things to be attached too because they contribute to purifying the mind. The mind is made of sattva and to reach 100% sattva is to achieve a 100% pure mind which reflects divinity. This is why Hindus aspire to live a sattvic lifestyle. In all contexts, daily life, work, career and relationships, strive for sattva.
This chapter reminds me of a good cricket or football match where each players plays the game incredibly well and shows good sportsmanship in the end and the prize money becomes less important, but the action of playing itself becomes more like a gem. and in the end . So the prize becomes less important but the action itself becomes awesome. I think we should all try to do awesome work wherever we go whatever field we work in. We should always push the boundary. Just like you are doing :)
Samadhi/ Moksha or Mukthi means liberation from the continues cycle of birth and death. One who abandon all his meterial desires and engaged in austerity will attain knowledge. Knowledge that he is more than his temperory material body and senses. He is a eternal soul and part of God/paramatma ( super soul ). Then when he left his mortal body his soul attains liberation. His soul will never be reborn again in the mortal world. Instead his soul will be merged with paramatma or super soul ( God ). And he will enjoy enternal blissfulness. Hare krishna 🙏
8:24 Vey important line here: Our understanding of this line is - Yoga (meditating on the self) is essential in breaking bonds of karma and truly becoming free. No effort on this path goes in vain. Even small amounts of regular practice of Yoga protects us from the greatest fear (here the greatest fear is us Not getting a human birth in next life thus being not able to continue our spiritual journey further - its like nature's feedback loop pushing us back down in the evolution ladder and not getting a human birth in next life(s) in case we've led an unconscious life). Getting a human birth is kind of winning a lottery which shouldn't be wasted and be made full use to spiritually advance. Animal births are not fruitful in that regard.

Yo bro please check out the Bhagwat Geeta explained by Dharma Speaks. He explains it all in English so you will be able to fully understand what it means.
In think best way to read and understand Bhagwat Geeta is to put oneself in Arjun place i.e 'Imagine you have to fight your Father, Mother and Siblings'. Think what you will do, what question will come to your mind. I believe you will ask the same question what Arjun asked and see if you are satisfied with the answers.
I think its not right to simply replace the Kaurava army before Arjuna with your own family members, since the Kurukshetra has its own context, which is fighting against ADHARMA. That wouldnt be the case with most of our near and dear ones, so yeah context is essential!

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita in literal sense, has the answer to all of one's questions. If ever in your life, you have a problem that you just can't figure out how to solve. You can read the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and you will find your answer. Every time I hear the words of Lord Krishna, even though I have heard it many times, I learn something new. Every single time. That's because once you read/hear the words, you always try to associate it with what's going on in your own life. And every time you are re-reading it, something new is happening in your life which you can associate to the learnings of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.
Elder persons says..... If you are facing any problem in your life just open geeta from any random point.... Read the page that opens you will get the solution

As someone who was born in India has been reading the Hindu scriptures for the past 12 years I can vouch that 🕉Bhagavad Gita is the penultimate of all kinds of knowledge. But sadly🙃 it is also true it is way beyond most people's comprehension as they lack the solid foundation to understand the text's complete essence. It is like trying to self study the Post doctoral research stuff with the knowledge base of a 3rd grade student. I would suggest you rather build foundation first which is mandatory to understand the nuances in Hinduism. Hope you take this criticism in a positive light. 😇
What foundation you ask? First try and have basic knowledge of Sanskrit language. Don’t depend on translations especially not the English ones. Translations in Indian languages are much better but cannot be 100% accurate. Second try to start with Ithihasas like Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana and Maharishi Ved Vyasa’s Mahabharata. Since these are in story format it is much easier to begin with these and later understand the deep nuances of these texts from the Commentaries of Great Scholars and Guru lineages of India. After that you can read on your own. After mastering these entirely then gradually move on to the 18 Puranas which are going to give you a much more deeper insight into all the paraphernalia of Sanantana Dharma under one umbrella. The above is more than enough for most people. But if you still want to dig deeper then touch upon the 6 different Darshana Shastras and study them in detail. Bhagavad-Gita seems overkill for someone who has no idea of all the above knowledge. Upanishads, Brahmasutras and Bhagavad-Gita together constitute Prasthaana thraya. These are the top most of the knowledge available to mankind . If basic Sanskrit is Kindargarten then understanding Bhagavad-Gita would much beyond PhD. Many act as if they understand it but most do not. If one has expereintially understood the knowledge in the Gita then one is known as a Jeevan Muktha. If only Liberation (Mukthi) were as easy as buying a book and reading it all by yourself then there would be many enlightened people roaming around by now. This is it when I mean by foundation.
Sri KRISHNA IS THE ALMIGHTY LORD . This was proven by great SAGES LIKE NARADA MUNI AND OTHERS . SRI KRISHNA is the CREATOR , PROPRIETOR, BHAGWAN, HIGEST AUTHORITY ETC
7:54 I'd like to know if it explicitly states that a warrior's duty or dharma is to fight against "evil," because, based on my understanding, the focus is more on the act of fighting itself, regardless of which side of the conflict one is on. The concept of "evil" is subjective. For instance, a tiger killing its prey might be viewed as "evil" from one perspective, yet it aligns with the tiger's dharma, which is essential for maintaining the balance of the forest ecosystem.
Arjuna and Krsna are best friends btw So one commentary on this chapter by Vedic Scholars, is that Krishna let Arjuna talk for the whole 1st chapter. And the first words of the 2nd chapter are from Krishna. But notice how Krishna doesnt dive deep into the philosophy until Arjuna asks to be his disciple. So in this way for us humans, its up to us to realise where our intelligence gives up and seek shelter and guidance to the Divine. Bc he will since hears all and sees all. And if you're open to change and he can reveal much more.

The Mahabharata War: The story unfolds on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, where two factions of the Kuru dynasty-the Pandavas (the rightful heirs) and the Kauravas (their cousins who wrongfully seized the throne)-are about to engage in a great war. The Pandavas: Led by Yudhishthira, they represent dharma (righteousness). They include Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva, each with unique skills. The Kauravas: Led by Duryodhana, they symbolize adharma (unrighteousness) and refuse to return the kingdom to the Pandavas despite peaceful efforts. Arjuna’s Dilemma: At the start of the battle, Arjuna is overcome with doubt and moral confusion. He is reluctant to fight against his own family, teachers, and friends on the opposing side. He questions the purpose of war, the nature of duty, and the consequences of his actions. The Gita’s Teachings: In response to Arjuna's despair, Lord Krishna imparts profound spiritual wisdom: Duty and Dharma: Krishna emphasizes performing one’s duty without attachment to the outcomes (Karma Yoga). Paths to Liberation: He describes different paths to self-realization, including devotion (Bhakti Yoga), knowledge (Jnana Yoga), and disciplined action (Karma Yoga). The Eternal Self: Krishna explains the immortality of the soul, encouraging Arjuna to see beyond physical existence. Surrender to the Divine: Krishna advises surrendering to God’s will as the ultimate way to peace and liberation. The Bhagavad Gita serves as a guide for living a meaningful, balanced, and spiritually focused life while addressing universal human challenges like doubt, fear, and purpose.
Keep yourself in present, and you will free from attachments. Or vive versa. When all attachments end, you will be thrown in present.😊 Couple of verses in the last are fire 🔥🔥
One cannot live anywhere else but in present. The past or the future are only relevant in the present. But if the past or the future are not bothering you in the present, then you are able to enjoy the present.
You will have more and more Aww moments as you get deeper. I'm just loving it the way you are trying to understand and expressing it. May be you can read the book Bhagavad Geeta Unravelled by AMI GANATRA to understand the whole family tree and history or incidents that lead to this war along with facts with differences between the original (written by Vyasa Maharshi who lived and part of the family of Kauravas and Pandavas) and other versions who rewritten the geeta based on the original version.
In the Upanishads(as well as in Advaita Vedanta), the soul is interpreted as a kind of "entropy" or "information" that is part of Brahman or the universe. I tried to look at Krishna's explanation in chapter 2 in that context, and what Krishna means is that your soul is the consequences of your actions on your surroundings. And consequences of one's action far outlives one's body in the form of universal entropy (therefore making the soul outlive your body). So, it's one's duty to make a positive impact by upholding their Dharma. I mean, I might be way off base here, but it made sense to me.
As someone who never read Bhagwat Gita because I had rough idea what it was about since my mum used to tell me puranic and itihas based scriptures story when I was a kid, but seeing you this excited has made me want to start it too :)
It's so important to reflect on each chapter- indeed to take time on a daily basis to think about each verse. Whenever I'm going though a difficult time or wrestling with a dilemma I pick a verse at random and read and reflect. It truly is God (Krishna) talking to us as a friend and advisor who loves us and wants the best for us. All he asks for, in return is devotion
To me, Chapter 2 feels like practical advice for life. It teaches me to focus on my actions and not get attached to the results, which helps me stay calm whether I succeed or fail. Sankhya philosophy adds clarity by encouraging logical thinking and seeing the bigger picture. It’s about living with balance and purpose, not just belief.
Sri Krishna really does "spit facts" in the Bhagavad Gita! His teachings are not just spiritual but deeply practical, as he breaks down concepts like self-realization, duty, and detachment. If OriginalPagan's reading captures these profound truths, it's bound to resonate with anyone seeking clarity and wisdom in their own lives. The eternal relevance of the Gita is a testament to how transformative Krishna's words truly are.
Yoga in the context of Bhagavad Gita is about Unity... Not to be confused with the school of Yoga, or Ashtanga Yoga (practised by Patanjali and all...) Yoga (the verb) vs Yoga (the noun)
But isn't the final stage of Ashthanga yoga 'Samadhi' (Union/Unity with the divine) itself? Ashthanga translates to something having 8 parts or stages (which in this case are yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyaahaara, dhaarna, dhyana and samadhi respectively) and is the true and complete meaning of yoga including everything from yama to yogasanas to samadhi in my opinion. But yes, most people only think of yoga as yogasanas which is definitely a very restricted meaning. Sorry for my ignorance in advance, if any.
@@shivani6305 Yup, but Yoga the noun in popular culture lingua franca refers to exercise/breathwork, and at the very best spiritually, Ashtanga yoga specifically... Yoga the verb in Sanskrit itself means to unite...
Salute to you, sir.

Exactly

I had to do that and I fully understand it now. I took the right steps that time.
@@kaushiksunapu5657 in here keeping your parents, siblings and all, mean u are fighting against Adharma. More like lets say hypothetically, u have a wife and your parents just somehow wronged(criminally wronged) your wife when she talked back to them during an argument. What will u do? As a son support your parents and tell your wife "if u would have behaved properly this wouldn't have happened" and shame her or as a husband support your wife cus whatever happened was wrong and sue your parents? There maybe 100s of reason to take your parents side since u have been with them since the start of your life but to choose your wife who u have met now presently needs guts. In this situation u should choose to be Dharmic, instead of choosing on the basis of relationships. Both karma and Justice will be served.

I read The Geeta about 20 years ago. Though the teachings of Shri Krishna are referred almost everyday by someone somewhere but going through these in the original poetic style hits differently. I am loving this series of reading chapter by chapter.

When you detach from your body : you relax the body and brainwaves to actually heal the body.
How paradoxical. As paradoxical as Bruce Lee saying relax your hand to punch stronger.

This is it when I mean by foundation.
its like reading moral of the story without reading the story
@@bimmaku732 true! Geeta is the summed up version, u go deeper u will get variety pf knowledge from the one shloka

Once we read gita we should try to live that way.
Arjuna and Krsna are best friends btw
So one commentary on this chapter by Vedic Scholars,
is that Krishna let Arjuna talk for the whole 1st chapter.
Thank you
Wooow You have the Same Points highlighted from when i was reading this chapter! You have this perfect understanding to know which part is the real advice in the story going On... [[[ Remember There are lakhs of Spiritual books in all religions and in sanatan dharma together, But what makes Bhagvad gita Most important is Shri Krishna Himself.. Chapter two is the best. It’s called Geeta Saar which means Summary of the Bhagvad Gita.
The Gita’s Teachings:
In response to Arjuna's despair, Lord Krishna imparts profound spiritual wisdom:
Duty and Dharma: Krishna emphasizes performing one’s duty without attachment to the outcomes (Karma Yoga).
He is a master of situations
self is not individual according to krishna , the self is all pervading consiousness, that is you(existence that is infinite)
Keep yourself in present, and you will free from attachments.
Or vive versa.
When all attachments end, you will be thrown in present.😊
Couple of verses in the last are fire 🔥🔥
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, very good summary!
You can hear Swami sarvapriyananda lectures delivered in Manhattan, available on Spotify and TH-cam too... Will provide you utmost clarity
Everything is testable in geeta...but not in lab but through experience
I just discovered your channel today and watched many videos, its interesting to discover you here)
Sri Krishna really does "spit facts" in the Bhagavad Gita!
Thank you🙂
I am learning with you too. I love it
Yoga in the context of Bhagavad Gita is about Unity...
Not to be confused with the school of Yoga, or Ashtanga Yoga (practised by Patanjali and all...)
Yoga (the verb) vs Yoga (the noun)
There are the Yogas in Bhagavad Gita (Karma, Jnana, Bhakti, Raja etc.), Kriya Yoga etc. Care must be taken in translating and conveying the meaning itself.
@@prasvasu4217Oh I didn't know that even the term ashtang yoga is used narrowly in popular culture. I agree.
