aspects of it are. She described ethel as an “emotional crash test dummy.” She said “As an author, i let her make the mistakes i don’t want to make. As her story gets darker, i’m trying to get healthier and stronger.” So it’s partially autobiographical but not completely. Like, several songs may be dark in nature and centered around kidnapping and murder even though that isn’t something Hayden herself experienced, more so just a way of expressing deeper fears and trauma.
i saw a youtube comment from her mom that said hard times isn’t autobiographical to hayden but i think the comment also hinted that it draws from an experience hayden’s mom actually had
Not wanting to be an echo in the chamber however I totally agree with your comment that you sent in the live. I think it's important to allow for nuance in the consumption of art as well as not assume that because someone has white privilege that they are unaware that they do and assume they don't "check" or acknowledge their privilege. You can be white and also be an ally to people of color. You can be a trans women and be pro choice and an ally to people who the overturn of roe v wade directly effects. I respect Haydens' choice to change the direction of her art because it is hers but I don't think that if she hadn't made a statement about said change or made the change itself that would've equated to bad allyship or her art somehow erasing or taking away from the experiences of others peoples oppression.
Man, once again it hits home that I'm almost as old as the youngest Boomers though I'm GenX. Until now I was enjoy the interesting and ambient and powerful songs and considered them to be much more broad than trans experience or life in the south of the USA. In fact, I'm Canadian and just now learned that Ethel is trans. This will add much more impact to already impactful messages and music. I love the ethics and universal concerns. It's healthy and needed today (as always.)
I can't believe she even felt the need to say this. Do people not hear the sarcasm in some of her lyrics? The South has a lot of natural beauty and it can be really peaceful but there's no doubt racism and homophobia here. Just because she is white doesn't mean she isn't allowed to share her experience and her own struggles. Every piece of art doesn't have to be some commentary on social justice. Anyone complaining about her needs to give the album another listen. To me, Ethel Cain and everything that happened to her is a reflection of some of the worst parts of southern culture. In my opinion, she is definitely aware of the injustice that happens here, but her art doesn't always need to highlight every aspect of it.
She literally said in the video that she wants to share her experience while not ignoring others experiences .. she’s just being open about historical facts that are still effect ppl to this day.
my brother in christ do you not know what the meaning of preacher's daughter is? that entire album would be considered woke nonsense by people like you but ok
Being trans does not by default make one woke. Trans just is as it is. It's not an ideology. Woke is an ideology, more accurately, a mass psychosis. It has no basis in actuality, no reality without a human mind to give it one, much like gods and their respective religions. I'm quite familiar with Preacher's Daughter and without Hayden stating it's a "queer" coming of age concept album one would never guess it to be so. Without knowing any of the mythology of Ethel Cane, Preacher's Daughter just reads like the life and misadventures of a white trash, southern country girl and not really obvious as a connected events concept at that. Keeping it vague seems to be Hayden's style and it works in a poetic way but not if you're trying to promote an ideal. As many famous artists have said, they prefer the audience to interpret the art for themselves. The woke nonsense just alienates people. It is inherently divisive. If what you're preaching emphasizes the otherness in others you are part of the sickness, not the cure.
@@panicrev555 i was there the minute preacher's daughter first dropped and i knew that plenty of the lyrics would be considered 'woke' and i didn't have the story or context behind the character of ethel cain on my first listen. if all you can describe preacher's daughter as is a queer coming of age album, you are not looking into the lyrics or at all familiar with the meanings of them, you just listen to her music surface level and that's not her problem
I thought the character Ethel Cain was trans but that Hayden was biologically female, I'm fairly new to her music but isn't her father like some baptist minister? So I'm not quite sure how her transitioning as a teenager or younger would have been accepted by her family due to religious reasons etc, like getting hormone treatment/puberty blockers etc, no offence meant to anyone, I'm just thinking out loud really.
@@YoullClapWhenImGone I'm pretty sure it's the other way around - Hayden is trans, but not sure about the character of Ethel Cain, maybe the character is cis. Not sure about her transitioning either =)
@@LL-mj6jp Oh ok, I'm probably mistaken as I'm pretty new to her music, I just could have swore I read an interview where she decided the Ethel Cain character would be trans, but my memories worse than a goldfish lol. Again I don't mean this in an offensive way to anyone, I just don't know anyone who is trans so have no one else to ask but wouldn't a genetically male trans person have to start some kind of hormone treatment/puberty blocker to stop their voice from breaking etc as they entered puberty? The reason I ask is that her voice very specifically sounds female to me anyway, and it just seems if she started transitioning say, for example around the age of 18 when she legally became an adult it would have been too late to begin any hormone type treatments to stop her voice from breaking etc, due to her strict Christian upbringing (I'm making an assumption here as I believe her father is a baptist minister and wouldn't have been open at all to the idea of having a trans child, therefore not allowing her to begin hormone/puberty blocker treatment while still a minor) That's the part that confuses me I guess, but like I said I totally hold my hands up in the sense that I don't know anything really about how one begins to transition in a medical/practical sense and anything I've asked wasn't meant to offend anyone at all I just know very little about the practical aspects of it I guess, thanks for taking the time to answer my question anyway though, it's much appreciated 🙂
she is a trans woman, meaning she was assigned male at birth, but she came out as a trans woman on facebook on her 20th birthday and transitioned into a woman
why would she even have to address this???? idk why she even did you will never ever appease these people they're looking at ways to get mad or offended. god forbid an american singer and woman sings about american aesthetics, imaginary. this is so dumb
Just a pre-apology before the inevitable cancel culture comes ripping through because God forbid we promote America without bashing normal white people in the process. 🥱
@@Wmoore1 she’s not bashing any normal people. if she’s bashing anyone (even though she isn’t) it’s racist people and i’d say those don’t deserve to be protected from criticism. her entire persona critiques/satirizes the american way of life and she decided to explain it to make sure people know

This generations obsession with this shit is insane. She's fucking awesome, her world of creation belongs to her and she has given it as a gift. The over explaining beyond the art itself is no good for anyone, not her, not the fans, not the creative world in general. The idea that her work from her perspective, would need any qualifiers is ridiculous. The music itself is a powerful statement with no need for this trash level identity muck. This shit is puritanical and a bit fascistic. Above all else it is extremely corporate. This is like a PR managed struggle session based on focus group data. It is most certainly juvenile. There is no creation of art with so much self consciousness about how every little unimportant voice will scream obscenities back at you just for being yourself. If you want to ruin everything great about her just keep going with the ugly judgement and diluted insanity, thinking that you can or need to know every possible angle on an artist and that they are pure the way you need them to be. Explaining every dark corner of art and removing all mystery and depth is just bleak. It can only produce one dimensional product with no complexity. It also pretends that you, the listener, knows more or at least as much about the artist as they do themselves. Just think about how gross and stupid that is. Her representation of modern Americana is important. It needs to be exactly what she see's it as. The idea that "showing a world" is "to condone everything about" it is just wild. To imagine that her experience is not as complex and layered as it obviously is, is startlingly unintelligent. She's showing an Americana that is evolving and participating in culture along with and maybe even against some of us. To deny that it is real and that she is from it is beyond fucked up. Especially if that is where her expression takes her. I would have never thought from her music that she would be this self conscious about the beautiful music and cultural dialogue she has created. If you are a "fan" of hers and have contributed to this you should be ashamed of yourself.

You're trans, right? I'm curious how it is for you. Seems love would be very difficult to find, seeing as though you don't fit the typical mold. If you're MTF then you'd probably prefer gay men to straight, but you look like a pretty girl, so straight men might show interest, but then flake out when in close proximity. And gay men probably wouldn't be ideal either because they want a 'man', visually speaking. Or, is love even something you feel you need? As long as you love yourself you're good. But I am curious about that because we all have inborn needs to fulfill certain aspects of our persona.
@@bluewescott4631 Looking for a lil clarity. Since this is a new phenomenon for most people. There's a trans MTF in my neighborhood, and the other day he/she asked me to open a container of Talenti Ice Cream. Definitely flirting with me. But I'm straight. Afterwards, this question popped into my mind, that I would have asked him. Like, does he seek a gay male, or straight male. Because logically it seems this would put him in a very lonely place. Not getting love from gay or straight. Every case is different, but just wondering how it is for Ethel.
@@jwebstersmithii7459 yeah so, gay men don’t want to date women, even trans women, because gay men are attracted to men, not just anyone with a penis and typically male skull structure. straight men do want to date women, and the goal of a trans woman who is looking for a relationship with a man is (generally) to find a guy who sees her as a woman, is attracted to her, treats her with respect, and isn’t ashamed of her in public. the person you are talking about sounds from your description like a trans woman who doesn’t quite “pass” as female, and your question i think is basically “if i as a straight man am not attracted to this person, and gay guys wouldn’t be either, where does that leave them?” well my answer would be that this is a struggle for a lot of trans women who, either out of bad luck or lack of financial resources for surgeries/hormones, don’t pass enough as female for straight men to be interested in dating them. but these trans women will continue transitioning, and i know there are plenty of straight men who will be able to get to know them as women, even if that goes against what they’ve always thought of women as, and will be able to have relationships with them. this has been a pretty long lol but im just trying to take the opportunity to offer an explanation since most people don’t even attempt to understand where trans people are coming from. also, just as kind of a side note there are a lot of people who are attracted to androgynous people, so there’s that. even though that probably wouldn’t work since trans women want to be seen as women.
It's art it's fictional like you said. Do not feel pressured to alliance with groups of people. Your experience is ok and it's actually the norm for most people. These are seld made victims in woke culture. It's ok to be white and history is history not the experience lived today. Don't get flipped be honest and real.

She's amazing and should not worry about pleasing everyone because truth is you never will.

If the resulting work is the artist's true voice and vision, own it. There will always be haters; your work is not defined by them. Be you.
I always have time to listen to you talk.

You are beautiful! Thank you for your art
Sorry but the “men you can leave” comment at 2:52 ATE
yeah, ate shit. 👻
5:04 as they say, love the South, hate the bigots
Lmao the way you deleted what you were typing as soon as she said not music related

Didn't she say she took inspiration from Bones and All.. 😅
I was all aboard the all-aboard the Ethel Cain train until I heard this woke nonsense.
my brother in christ do you not know what the meaning of preacher's daughter is? that entire album would be considered woke nonsense by people like you but ok
Trans does not necessarily equal woke. Trans just is. Woke is a mass psychosis.
@@panicrev555 i was there the minute preacher's daughter first dropped and i knew that plenty of the lyrics would be considered 'woke' and i didn't have the story or context behind the character of ethel cain on my first listen. if all you can describe preacher's daughter as is a queer coming of age album, you are not looking into the lyrics or at all familiar with the meanings of them, you just listen to her music surface level and that's not her problem
hope you free yourself from the “woke” chains.

@@HiddenHandMedia Ethel is a woman
Again I don't mean this in an offensive way to anyone, I just don't know anyone who is trans so have no one else to ask
but wouldn't a genetically male trans person have to start some kind of hormone treatment/puberty blocker to stop their voice from breaking etc as they entered puberty?
The reason I ask is that her voice very specifically sounds female to me anyway, and it just seems if she started transitioning say, for example around the age of 18 when she legally became an adult it would have been too late to begin any hormone type treatments to stop her voice from breaking etc, due to her strict Christian upbringing (I'm making an assumption here as I believe her father is a baptist minister and wouldn't have been open at all to the idea of having a trans child, therefore not allowing her to begin hormone/puberty blocker treatment while still a minor)
That's the part that confuses me I guess, but like I said I totally hold my hands up in the sense that I don't know anything really about how one begins to transition in a medical/practical sense and anything I've asked wasn't meant to offend anyone at all
I just know very little about the practical aspects of it I guess, thanks for taking the time to answer my question anyway though, it's much appreciated 🙂
Im sooo confused. What does she mean when she says shes trans? Like shes going to transition into a male?
she is a trans woman, meaning she was assigned male at birth, but she came out as a trans woman on facebook on her 20th birthday and transitioned into a woman
why would she even have to address this???? idk why she even did you will never ever appease these people they're looking at ways to get mad or offended. god forbid an american singer and woman sings about american aesthetics, imaginary. this is so dumb
It's not dumb, it's called being aware.
she didn’t address it because people were mad, she did it because she wanted to explain herself better and add another layer to the art she creates

How can she be trans then?
this was so unnecesarry lol
You're trans, right? I'm curious how it is for you. Seems love would be very difficult to find, seeing as though you don't fit the typical mold. If you're MTF then you'd probably prefer gay men to straight, but you look like a pretty girl, so straight men might show interest, but then flake out when in close proximity. And gay men probably wouldn't be ideal either because they want a 'man', visually speaking. Or, is love even something you feel you need? As long as you love yourself you're good. But I am curious about that because we all have inborn needs to fulfill certain aspects of our persona.
ethel already has a boyfriend lol
@@sikigenesis I don't doubt it. Just, a general question to understand better.
Why would she "prefer gay men to straight"??? I think she probably prefers men who have the capacity to be attracted to her.
