I played the PC version with no slowdown. :-P I'd pick up rocks and place them right over the red ant holes. Normally the reds would be able to clear it out, but if you placed 9 rocks on the ant hole, the only thing they can do is make a new exit. This takes them a long time, meanwhile they are running out of food. And before their workers could bring food back to their starving colony, I'd have either had my black ants taken over the food patches first, or filled up their new ant hole and surrounded the rocks there with my own ants to keep them from getting in. And thus, I sealed enemy ant colonies in the dark underground until they all starved to death.

it's one of the most silliest and somehow the best strategy to beat the place easily
(especially in the 8th and 5th scenarios [i guess because i forgot it] due that there is no rain to shatter the stones)
I seem to remember you could beat the PC version in like 10 minutes by setting breeders to 70% and just sending hordes of queens to colonize the yard before the reds can. Later, switch between sections to send armies of queens into the same red section until the section is won. Rinse and repeat

There's _one_ fun aspect to SimAnt -- *playing as a spider* . You can "mindjack" any of your ant buddies by just pressing X and then clicking on them, but I'll bet you never tried it on a spider, did you? It totally works.

8:14 You CAN fight the Queen Ant yourself, you just have to use the correct button to do so, and target her face while doing it, I've always done it. Like double clicking on an enemy to initiate combat. This is just a theory but I feel like Jared just let the Red Ants (workers, soldiers, and breeders) initiate and attack him instead.
That was my strategy. First thing: go to red ants nest and kill queen. If I die instead, go again.

If your favorite youtuber was under false accusations and massive hate from millions of people but somehow pushes through it all would you not be happy? Although I agree with you. Seeing people making "Projared good, internet people bad" type comments gets tiring and makes me mad that those same people probably did believe those allegations and slandered his name throughout the whole ordeal. Hell, some may be jumping on that bandwagon and using Projared's innocence to gain oh so sweet internetpoints. But I guess im getting a little bit off topic. Imagine an AntSim game where you start out simple, but end up being able to breed mutant ants with stupid powers. The end goal of the game is to attack and murder human beings. It wouldn't be anything TOO graphic, mostly just people screaming in fear as you crawl up their legs and start feasting on them.

It wasn't really out of guilt since I didn't turn on him. Though I'll fully admit I didn't even try to look into it. But with the amount of people who did, I felt that even a little more activity in his video feeds would be a nice way to give a long distance pat on the back.
I'm glad this was only the console version of the game. The PC SimAnt was much more terrifying, with better pixel art and sound quality and effects, along with a horrifying close up shot of the spider's face as you watch it literally chew your ant up and spit it back out again. Thanks Maixs, for such a fond, fond memory for my 5 year old brain.

My mom made me get rid of my ps2 and all my games in 2006 when I was 10 because she read some bogus story online about how all the school shooters played video games and therefore videogames make school shooters. So, I have none of the games I loved as a child anymore. I started playing again in 2011 when my uncle gave me his ps3. But, no nostalgia games or old consoles😞

i thought an ant simulation game would be great for a modern game. the difference i would make though? id try to make it a rts game like command and conquer instead of actually being an ant. i would also have multiple factions of ants, so its not just a 2 sided battle. if there is already a game like that...let me know

Reading and writing speeds differ on all drives. Writing almost always being slower. And not all cartridges were capable of being written to by the console. This means that extra chips were often added to the cartridge to support this feature with varying levels of efficiency.

I think this is one of the cases where the PC version was definitely the better option to play. Controls were more tight, the strategy was existent and well-done, to say nothing of winnable, and the food was... ok, there was still only peas, but the PC version of SimAnt was fun instead of a fascinating bore.
I'm curious what the PC version brings to the strategy that the SNES version doesn't. I've only played the Mac and SNES versions, and the Mac version required significantly less strategy. Once you beat the red ants the first time, you basically won. It was just a matter of breeding wildly and stomping them out before they could do anything else.
This video had a lot of great hilarious moments, though I've never been too big on sims. I hope Jared recovers from this.

***** We have them here in California too! I took an antlion as a pet, kept him in a bowl of sand, and fed him for about 3 years until he grew up into a dragonfly-looking creature. Then I let him go. :3
I played SimAnt all the way through several times when I was young, but it was on the PC. The controls were reasonable and I remember having a lot more personal control than shown in the SNES version in your video. Slowdown also wasn't an issue I remember. I don't remember some of the UI though, so I think quite a bit was changed for the SNES port. That's too bad, I remember the PC version being fun throughout. You should try it out sometime, if it's possible to find anymore.
The PC version can be found in multiple places online. It can be downloaded from some abandonware sites, and if downloads are not your thing, the Internet Archive (a website dedicated to preserving all kinds of stuff) allows you to play the DOS version in your browser (using a server-side emulator, I think).
EDIT: Apparently the Internet Archive has the DOS-version playable in the browser and the PC version as a separate download, it seems.

The PC version was over in probably 15 minutes. No need to save. Even if you lost your progress, just start it up again.

I beat this game as a kid. Like you, I found fighting the reds in invasion colonies both extremely tedious and difficult combined. 10 black ants vs 200 red ants. So you bum rush the enemy queen with your infinite lives as a soldier over and over until you win at terrible odds, then eventually outgrow the queenless fools that get lawnmowered. Yay.
There is a way to win much faster though. Never kill the red queen in the first square, but keep them too small to breed until you control the surrounding territories. Keep stalling there as your additional colonies grow and the reds never spawn across the map, because they're still in the first contested square. Once your ants cover everything possible, THEN kill the red queen. This will spawn the only remaining red colony into 100's of your ants in one of the colonies, just go there and win. The ending is kind of lulzy, you basically run the humans out of the house ^_^.
I have done this all of the time but I wait until my the yard is about 1/3rd full before i kill the queen so I have some challenge and it isnt over right away. Also you dont have infinite lives, you only have as many lives as you have eggs since you replace one of the eggs that the queen drops... I love going into colonies with 5 or so black ants vs 300 and on a few of the maps their are rocks almost all the way going north to south of the map near your holes so I block the few entrances off so they cannot attack me allowing me time to build up alittle and find back door holes (at the bottom of my lair) into their base to either steal their food/eggs or kill their queen

I'm scared of spiders because they look terrifying and have a multitude of lifeless eyes. I think snakes are actually really cool. I'd say the only weird part about that is the horses. I could understand if you had a bad experience with one once, but otherwise I don't see why.

As someone who has acute arachnophobia, my fear was actually not triggered by the rather crudely rendered spider in this game.
Superfield don't play the PC game though, because apparently the spider in that is terrifying.

The pc version was actually a superb experience, which is what i grew up with. This version is like a metaphor for all console ports... Dumbed down. The PC version was actually a well made game, except for the fact the spider would eventually start shooting ants with lasers.

these games really show how much of a lightning in the bottle games like simcity and transport tycoon were, and how difficult it was to follow up on such a game
