Of you suffer from plantar fasciitis, don’t wear ballet flats or super flat shoes. (I actually got PF from wearing (cushioned) ballet flats walking around campus (work).) I need a thick sole and/or a slightly elevated heel, or it comes right back.

Dansko Mary Janes, most comfortable, cushiony shoes in years for me. They have a one inch wedge heel, very supportive. No break in period! Leather, good quality, $140 price, and I didn't buy them on sale.

I’ve had chronic plantar fasciitis for 23 years & could never wear flats since I was young. Try the foam Birkenstock slide knockoffs or the real thing. They are the most supportive shoes I’ve ever worn. My doctor told me the best shoe for me would be something akin to a roller skate 🛼 (Granny boot) without the wheels. I was always better off in a heel. The Birkenstock knock-off is the only shoe, flat or otherwise I can wear without an orthotic.

I agree that Vivaias are overrated and do not live to their hype. I do not feel any arch support, and they are still on the narrow side. I had to change into leather shoes within 30 minutes of an event. The ballet flats are so low that I felt like Cinderella at midnight when I wore them. I swear three-inch heels from Inez or Ally NYC are more comfortable than Vivaia flats or low heels.

I’m interested to hear this. I was suspicious because they’re so overhyped by social media influencers. I went to a doctor once who specialized in sports medicine. He actually got mad at me for wearing ballet flats. He said it was stupid to wear those shoes... no support at all. (I thought high heels were the stupid shoes to be wearing. Hmm...) BTW, they were Clarks with a little bit of support built into the insole. I do think he was right. I'm 61 now. I have to wear wide toed trainers for life, with a good arch and a slight heel. My feet hurt every day, at least a little bit.

I hope you find shoes that help you even more . I'm sure , like many other health issues , that some foot issues may be hereditary . My husband's family was very poor so as children , they only had cheap , poor fitting shoes ; as a result , they all have various foot ( and back ) issues . Also , a friend who wore high heels daily for work also had extremely serious foot problems by retirement age . Heredity coupled w/ bad habits ... 🥰

yes I believe he was right too. I had a knee surgery and have to wear flat comfy shoes; sneakers and loafers with like 1 inch heels are the ones I go for. Ballet flats have too thin soles and no support for the arch, which I find hurt my knees.

… 90+ percent of our foot problems are caused by our shoes. Going bare feet is the best thing for you. You do not need shoes to support your feet. The feet should support themselves. Personally, I think we weaken the two arches of our feet by wearing shoes that support them.

Honestly when I started wearing Birkenstocks in summer my feet went up half a size. I don’t believe it’s a bad thing at all as it seems to me that the less restrictive the shoe, the better. I also wear other shoe styles but I mainly go for flat shoes and I don’t feel I need any extra support as long as I do the strength training necessary to get enough back support. I'm learning over the past few days about the need for working with releasing the fascia in the body -- starting with the feet. The feet are our foundation, and whatever's going on in the feet has a ripple effect all the way up the body. If you're pinching your toes due to uncomfortable shoes, what does that do to the rest of the body? Going barefoot seems like the best idea, for most of the time -- otherwise wear "barefoot" sneakers. What's more elegant: plastic things on the feet that make us pinched and physically ill, or comfortable shoes that let our toes have some space between so that we can relax, breathe and flow inside our bodies?

I absolutely ADORE Vivaia shoes! I have four pairs, and when I look to buy shoes, that is go-to store. They’re stylish, easy to care for, and comfortable. I like that they’re eco-friendly and, for the vegans, cruelty free. I’m impressed that they’re breathable. I usually don’t like wearing shoes made of man-made materials because they don’t breathe, and the side effect of that is stinky feet. I don’t have that problem with their shoes.
You’re not “feeling” things, Frédérique. As we get older, our feet get bigger. I used to be able to wear a size 39 shoe comfortably, and now they’re too small (even though I’m slimmer than I was 2 years ago), and I have to wear a size 40 shoe.

I have four pairs of Vivaia flats in different colors and styles. The pointed toe is as comfortable as the square toe. I do wear an insole at the suggestion of my orthopedist. Vivaia has eased my sorrow over no more heels 🥲. I'm going to add the Aria No. 5, (so reminiscent of the Chanel bi-color ballet flat); and the water repellent ankle boots for winter wear. Thank you Frederique for the discount code and for sharing all the fabulous tips in dressing with elegance no matter a woman's age.

It’s not only you, Frédérique. I know that being home all the time for the better part of two years (thank, pandemic) and not wearing shoes made my already wide feet wider. Where I used to be about a C width, I’m now probably closer to a D width.
When I was a kid and would go shopping with my mom (in the 70s), we’d really have to hunt for shoes because having women’s shoes come in widths was a real rarity. When she was browsing and a salesperson would ask her if she wanted to try a pair she was admiring, she’d often say, “Bring me the box. It’ll probably fit better.” The youngsters usually didn’t get it, but the experienced shoe fitters would chuckle and agree with her that stylish shoes really only fit with “model” feet.

Sorry to disappoint you but all flat shoes are terrible for feet. My doctor told me also that, walking in the house with nothing on your foot (bare foot) is a very bad habit. All the expert on this matter will tell you. Ladies should wear heel of 3 inches max. Sometimes, they can wear heel higher than that just for few hours. I suffered of bunions and my foot specialist (surgeon) told me the same thing. Now, I haven't no bunions anymore and take serious care of my foot all the time. Hope my explanation is well done because I am a French lady.
