"Enjoy Every Sandwich"... When I first heard him say that it brought tears to my eyes and that simple philosophy changed my life forever. I'm in my 50's and have health problems of my own. Warren Zevon's simple, matter of fact handling of his own demise gave me strength. What a wonderful talent and a wonderful man. He IS already missed by those he touched...

"it was a tactical error on my part for not seeing a doctor for 20 years"... lol. To know that your time is short and still be able crack jokes, its awesome. It makes you appreciate things a lot more. RIP Warren Zevon... I'd like to meet his taylor.

I got to see him 2 years before he was diagnosed. I remember being impressed that you could actually hear the lyrics. He was very engaged with the audience taking requests and answering questions. During one of the breaks and after the show you could see him walking around the club. You could literally walk right up to him --very approachable. At the time I remember leaving the show very happy and impressed, thinking to myself that was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

When you watch this in its entirety what you are witnessing is two men saying "I love you" and "goodbye"... Very deep

    • @MrJeffreyDR
      @MrJeffreyDR 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

In my humble opinion, it would be deep if they were pointing one another to Christ rather than the worship of creation. I’m not condemning anyone, rather am only observing something that’s clearly missing and deeply important. This is a cautionary tale and one that’s worth heeding, I think. God bless.

If you haven't heard it yet, listen to Zevon's cover of "knocking on heavens door", written and performed so bravely when he knew that his time was coming to an end, and may I say it is the greatest cover of the song there is. Zevon is the most underappreciated artist, and the greatest in my opinion.

"This guy's the real deal.... he's not one of these pretty faced, phony rock and roll guys, he's the real deal..... a poet and a singer and a song writer..... it doesn't get any better"
    Well said, David Letterman.

I love David. He interviews well. I would love him just for the music he puts on time and time again. This had to be so tough. What a great show. I miss Warren Zevon constantly. I thought it would get a bit better by now. God bless and thank you for all the good times you spread around. You are loved, Mr. Zevon.

Warren Zevon rocks!!!!!!!!!! Great singer/songwriter/musician. I love his album The Wind that he made while he was dying. I can tell Warren was scared facing death but I'm glad he got to do the last things in his life he wanted to do. He's at peace right now. RIP Warren, we miss you man!! One of Letterman's best shows ever!!!

I heard "keep me in your heart..." for the first time in a looog time and decided to find out more about warren.Haven't regreted that for a split second! There are only a few handful of people that can captivate you to such a degree as Zevon.
It is a shame that he is gone but soon he will be seen in a truck driving trough new mexico alongside jim morrison and elvis : ) So much talent and such great songs should be mandatory to know!

I will never fully comprehend Warren's brilliance. I have never cried when someone died that I never met. I did the day Mr. Zevon died. I'm not going to be able to face death as Warren did because I am not a brave man. I can only hope it sneaks up on me. Only listen to his songs with the lyrics posted ... do this long enough and the reality of his brilliance will be startling. A genius and a under appreciated work of art this man is. All men are NOT created equal, Warren is proof of this. I am an atheist but I hope to god if I am wrong and "they" are correct. I will be able in the AFTER-LIFE to thank Warren for what he has done for me in life. He is an inspiration for me and his talent as a song writer has helped me in my life in ways I could never express in print. Sorry to bother you, I'm feeling down today and just wanted to comment on the topic of Warren Zevon. A man that some, if not most, will never appreciate. I am so happy not to be one of the many who are ignorant in terms regarding to the true, almost unbelievable talent of an under appreciated song writer. A credit to his gender to say the least. Peace-out.

BrunoG-"Daves the best friend my music ever had"-Warren was supported and admired by Letterman for years. Lettermans choice to book the full hour was a tribute to the man and in fact an act of total class. It was the last time in the spotlight for a great artist. Warren wasn't exactly making the late night circuit. This was a great night, I remember watching this. Thanks for posting it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! As a somewhat confused and searching musician and music-lover, I first heard and was moved by Zevon around 2002 when I was still in college and the Rockline broadcast came on as Warren was recording The Wind. I didn't ever see this when it aired and have been looking for it on TH-cam for years, literally. I'd seen parts of it and the VH1 special, but never the whole thing. Bittersweet, but I needed to see this...thanks again.

    RIP Warren

AMAZING interview. I mean I'm a huge fan of both of these men and Dave is one of the best talk show hosts out there. And while he goes along during the interview without breaking you can tell there are moments that he's having a very hard time doing his job. I think just the sombre tone (especially for a Letterman interview) and the way Dave seems to relish every word Zevon says shows there is a very deeply rooted compassion between these two men. Which makes for the best of interviews.

In spite of Warren being snubbed from an institution that should have accepted him so many years ago, I will continue to enjoy every sandwich and then sleep when I'm dead. Although Warren died in L.A., he was born in Chicago; this is where I will continue my bad luck streak in dancing school...accidentally like a martyr.

Zevon shows grace here, but it's important to remember that Zevon's alcoholism relapsed in his final days. His story reads like a piece of poetry, and his end was as imperfect as the rest of his life.

Warren Zevon's second studio album was released in 1976, and he should have been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland by March of 2002 when he was still alive (several months before the cancer was initially diagnosed). It is now May of 2015, and Warren has still not been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

@NumbAsAStatue27 amen. it brought tears to my eyes to see the truly sincere, loving embrace by Dave...it's obvious they had a special friendship and that it meant a lot to Dave having Warren on the show one more time...so many of WZ's songs are indelibly imprinted in my brain and on my heart (btw, I currently live at the exact street address one street away from where Dave grew up as a kid...the grade school he attended is two blocks away and the H.S. he went to is 6 blocks from here)

I was/am a Linda Ronstandt fan in the sixties and seventies. In an interview she noted her "idols" to be Lowell George and Warren Zevon. I was ignorant. I learned and admired. I miss them.

I can't believe that somebody on this forum chided Letterman for not demanding that the HOF induct Zevon into the institution!??? Did the individual hear the compliment that Zevon gave Dave in the video. I am sure Warren appreciated Dave far more for his support in his career and friendship than any stupid nomination to a institution!!!
