    Thank you Leila for the video. Your color categories remind me of what my grandmother has-- swatch books full of colors and notes.
    She's older now and doesn't experiment as much. After sixty years of painting, she's probably tested everything at least once. But it reminds me of when I was little, studying all of her swatch books.

      Sounds like your grandmother did a good job. Personally when I look at swatches it makes me happier and lifts my mood up ❤

    Thank you Leila so much for this video, I am an older beginner who started with watercolors in order to deal with severe chronic pain and severe (diagnosed) PTSD because I have always been art oriented and very aware of detail your tutorial makes absolute sense to me and agree that every time a purchase is made, these prosesies are a must. At this point in my life, I don’t go beyond swatching, I am well aware that I will not become a professional but must say that watercolor has saved my life. Thank you for the thorough explanation!. ♥️🎄❄️

      Well everything starts with swatches. Next time you are using your paint take an A4 sheet of watercolour paper , put some masking tape around the edges, apply water to the window that you have created and just swatch random colors. Make them blend into each other but not completely. Then let it all dry. Take a black pen and draw what you see in these shapes. It could be something from life or abstract. It’s a great exercise to let paint guide you like that 😊 all the best

    Hey Leila : - Hope all's well, apart from an unnecessarily-negative comment below?...... (which I've replied to too). Just a grumpy, dour British bloke I reckon : sadly, they walk amongst us (!). Cheers for the ongoing pigment alchemy and interesting info. about watercolour materials, useful for complete beginners upwards...... One day this might even include myself??!.
    Hope the Kiwi summer is heating up nicely? - but luckily not up to crazy Aussie temperatues! - just, make the most of it while it's with you..... Bye Chuck, Nick.

      Thanks 😊 yes it is warming up but cold front is coming at the end of the week again. Over in NZ summer only settles in properly in January and then tapers off in March. ❤️

      Oh by the way that crazy person must have removed their comments or perhaps it was TH-cam that did that but they have disappeared 😊

    When I started watercolor painting a couple years ago, I started out doing the same as in, building an actual swatch book for each brand, including the opacity, pigment info, when I bought it, etc. However, I need to redo them, all my palettes of paints. Why? The swatch book is mixed media paper, not watercolor paper, not even cellulose! 😫 Well, it’s a good thing I like swatching! When I had a nail polish blog, I received so many polishes from so many brands and I created a swatch book for those as well. But I was clueless when I started my watercolor book and built it from way less than quality paper.

      Yes you’re right , the best thing to use for swatches is the paper you use for painting. But unless your mixed media paper is very different from the paper you use it shouldn’t really be too much of a problem. All brands create paper with their own recipes and even within the same brand you’d find many different kinds of paper. They would differ by the price point, materials they are made from, texture, pressing styles and glue sizing. I personally use different paper for different effects so I’d say if you are keeping all your info swatches on one type of paper you can still compare them between each other and it should not be a problem. On the other hand if you are creating swatches where you want to see how the paint behaves ( how it flows, granulates etc) then you really need to use the paper that you will actually be painting on as you’ll get very different results depending on the surface you are working on.
      From my experience mixed media paper tends to be less absorbent compared to watercolor paper and has more glue sizing so the paint would behave differently but the colours should be brighter and stronger, maybe even sharper boarders vs on cold press watercolor paper. 😊

      @@LeilaAtaya Totally agree! I started out just wanting a record of the colors. Now I see the error of my ways. 😁

    Great video again Leila!
    In my experience Pan/Cake watercolors can be so inconsistent depending on the maker and prices do vary. And paper is so important for me... I really like Holbein Artists' , but damn it's expensive. I also like Daniel Smith's Watercolors. Have you ever tried "Tube" water colors?
    Anyway thank you once again for your awesome tutorials and keep on painting!

    • @LeilaAtaya
      @LeilaAtaya  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you :) My regular w/c I do get in tubes and just refill the pans as I need, I find it's cheaper that way. The palette that I use is all mixed brand it's mostly Winsor& Newton, Daniel Smith, Schmincke, White night and a couple of Qor colours. Good, highly pigmented colours are so good to work with but they are expensive especially for beginners.
