I enjoy using bamboo reed pens for details and doodles. I dip the pen into diluted watercolor paint or acrylic ink to add a whimsical touch. So much fun.

Mark making with alternative tools is so fun! I think a bamboo pen would be something I would love trying.

I love bamboo pens and a few years ago, one of my neighbors trimmed their bamboo and I ended up dragging some home. Making pens with fresh cut bamboo is so fun! I have soaked then to make cutting easier, but be aware to not forget them. The water spoils. You can buy bamboo pens but I've only found large ones for sale. Finding a source to make your own means you can make them of any size! My neighbor had hers removed last year so I'm glad I dragged them home when I did! I think showings them for a few minutes. before using makes them write smoother.

Thank you!!! Yes! I think this is why I don't use my numerous sketchbooks, because I'm too busy painting to sell. I'm scared that if I've spent time in a sketchbook, and produced something extraordinary, then I've wasted that time somehow, which I know is ridiculous. There just isn't enough time in a day, but I do know that working in a sketchbook is so valuable to developing our skill. I just have to break out of that horrible mindframe. Your sketchbook is beautiful by the way. I adore the gold signature on the front. Very classy.

I find I use my sketchbooks more if they are NOT in the studio - I keep one or two beside the sofa and then it's a "me time" kind of process rather than something I'm trying to do for my business.

I agree with your approach to a sketchbook being a place where one can be messy and free to experiment - and looking back through them much later to find a few gems is a bonus! The instagram “perfect” sketchbooks are too good to be true - I always think there must be a sketchbook behind these sketchbooks, where all these perfect drawings and paintings were developed 😅

I haven't gotten over my sketching aversion, so the equivalent for me is an art journal. My art journal has some kind of awful pages, but I've learned from them. Sometimes I even write down what I've learned on a manilla tag and place it in the book. It's nice to hear your reminder that sketchbooks are for trying ideas/techniques/color out and it's a good habit to have.

I was taking a drawing course in college years ago, and at the end of the semester, we were supposed to turn in a sketchbook. I had barely drawn anything in mine, so I went to work and filled it with notes, magazine clippings with design ideas and stuff like that to cover up my lack of discipline in drawing. I got a really good grade on that sketchbook! So I think sketchbooks can be whatever serves you best, and if it takes an "art journal" form or anything else, it's serving you, and that's the point!

I started using my sketchbook as my playground,,,it's my space for anything I want. It helps free up my mind to actually doing some painting for keeps! Thanks Angela, this is a beautiful book! ❤

Love the blue on the birches. Have you thought about a smaller size. I’ve used Moleskins for many years but never liked the paper feel. Probably something like 90 lb hot pressed. I’d like 140 lb CP.

Finally a bigger sketchbook from Baohong! Congratulations! And it seems like a reasonable price, although I'm not sure about shipping to the US.... still might be worth it though! Edit: No shipping options to where I am (near Seattle?) I'm confused, do they not ship to the entire USA?

Wonderful video. I think the rule for working or not working on the backside is that there are no rules. The only thing that might be an issue is that there is bleed through and you may not want to incorporate that into the new drawing. QUESTION: Speaking of bleed through have you tried markers (copic, tombow, etc.) on that paper? I'm curious if there would be bleed through. Thank you.
