    You should always verify the gas line size needed for the particular load you are installing with the longest run method. Doesn't matter what state you're in, the National Fuel Gas code applies.

      Lmao! Attend a NAVIEN training seminar- I’ve been installing these since 2004; the solder joints look like shit, he’s got the t&p too far away to protect against scalding, not even gonna mention the safety issues or potential gas pipe sizing issues when u draw 199,000 btu off of a gas meter running other gas appliances at the same time- this kinda not planning will get u a gas starving code, this is worse than a Lowe’s or big box store install. Use licensed guys

    Can direct vent FVIR rated gas water heater be placed on the floor in a garage?

  • @meli5273
    @meli5273 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lots of questions! Our contractor installed our navien with a combined pressure relief line and condensate drain line. Both are PVC. I know these should be separate drain lines, but unsure if that's an option for us. A plumber has told us that pvc is not acceptable due to the T&P potential, however after viewing your video and reading the manual, it appears temperature is not an issue. So - since temp won't be high enough to melt, is PVC acceptable? Second, the install is sloped such that condensate drains left towards the Pressure relief line. If there is actually a pressure relief, wouldn't this just push any accumulated condensate water in the line to the right and down the condensate drain line out of house? Is there really an issue with accumulated condensate in the combined drain line? Lastly, in that scenario of pushing water, could the pressure cause condensate water to be pushed UP the condensate line back into the navien? Pic of install: photos.app.goo.gl/gt8WBEvWthFAwTA99. Backside photo here: photos.app.goo.gl/gt8WBEvWthFAwTA99. Thanks for the help!

    Are there any combustion air requirements?. I am talking about the air vents to the outside like you find in garages with tank water heaters. It would also have been helpful to me if you went over code requirements like minimum distance of exhaust vent to windows.

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The air venting requirements may vary slightly depending on manufacturer and model number. It’s best to read the installation manuals.
      However the general rule is to keep the exhaust 1ft away from corners, roof eves, inoperable windows and 3ft away from windows and door that open, as well as 3 ft away from a gas meter or the ground. Fresh air intake can stay inside if the room is bigger than 10ftx10ft and there is air ventilation soffits at the walls or ceiling.

    Can you use the same vent line as my 40 gallon tank water heater? Do I have to increase the size of my gas line?

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Zander. You cannot use the same vent material. You have to use the 2 inch PVC pipe. However if the vent run of the old one is straight, you can sleeve through the 2 inch pvc and finish it at the end, making sure its weatherproof.
      You can use the existing 1/2 inch gas line if it is within 24 feet of the main gas supply line.

    WHAT SIZE EXPANSION TANK DID YOU USE.... ALSO WHAT TYPE OF WATER SOFTNER AND WATER FILTER COMBO DO YOU RECOMMEND.... YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE KINETIC 4040??

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chad!
      1. We have used the 4.5 gal expansion tank, this is usually the case in homes with 75 or 100 gal water heaters. If the home has a 40 or 50 gal tank water heater, you might go with a 2 gal expansion tank. Remember every expansion tank needs to be pressurized to match the PSI of the water pressure in the plumbing system. Only then, the expansion tank serves its purpose.
      2. Every homeowner needs to know, that having a water purification/softener system in addition to your tankless water heater is optional, not a must. The worst it can happen is, in 2 or 3 years after the installation, your tankless water heater will throw out an error code that tells you to have your water heater heat exchanger flushed. If you don't mind the cost for the filtration system, go for it. It benefits your whole water usage experience. It reduces the mineral build up at your sinks, it reduces the itchy skin after a shower, and with this particular system also reduces the chlorine. FYI, in my own house I have used the Halo 5, halowater.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/2020-HALO-5.SPEC_.pdf
      The Kinetico 4040 seems to have the best of both worlds. Its is a salt water softener, and an activated carbon filtration system. What seems to be unique for this product is that it is electricity free. It uses the kinetic energy of moving water to power its systems instead of electricity. It seems like it will do good job, just make sure it is properly installed. Here is a link to the product with more detailed information; watercenterplaza.com/kinetico-4040s-od

      Hi Chad. Your local plumbing supplier is the best place to buy the water heater from. If you follow the instructions in the video you will be able to successfully install your Navien NPE240A tankless water heater. Connect the re-circulation return line to the dedicated 3/4" port on the bottom of the unit. Turn the black knob inside the water heater to "external mode", flush the air out of the recirc return line, and then move dip switch 2 up into on position. If you are replacing a 40 or 50 gal use 2 gal expansion tank, if you are replacing a 75 gal, use 4.5 gal expansion tank. Thanks!

    According to the 2018 International Plumbing Code (IPC) section 608.3, tankless water heaters do not require a thermal expansion tank when no water storage device is used.

    • @globeflicker9216
      @globeflicker9216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Local code requires one for me,
      If it’s well water, well pump and pressure tank have that covered.
      With Utility/Municipal water, you need one.

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Failed PRV and high pressure will pop the TP valve of the water heater open, which will prompt the homeowner to take action and replace the PRV, thus fix the pressure issue. Yes, if plumbing problems are ignored many things could go wrong with the plumbing.

    YOU FORGOT TO INSTALL THE ISOLATION VALVES ON THE TANKLESS UNIT DO TO MAINTENANCE ONCE A YEAR AND A CHECK VALVE

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there!
      Yes, we have the flush valves down there. As far as check valve goes. The Navien A series have those built-in within the circulation pump. You don't need an external check valve. You would need the check valve though if you install any of the other tankless manufacturer's products when you feed the cold inlet and circulation return together, a check valve needs to be present for each of the two lines before the joint T-ee. Every time there is a circulation pump involved, we prefer using the Navien, due to simplicity of installation and reliability.

    you cant put the relief valve like that.....dangerous.

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the tankless water heaters, those are only pressure relief valves/not a temperature and pressure relief valves/, so I don’t see why it would be dangerous. They don’t sense the temperature as there is no temperature unless a faucet is open in the plumbing system, thus no temperature overheating could occur. These valves only react to high pressure, so it does not matter how far from the water heater it is located. Of course the closer the better.
      It wouldn’t be right if it was a temperature and pressure relief valve on a tank water heater.

Whoever heard of purchasing a premium recirculating tankless water heater that the contractor decides to disable the 24/7/365 always ready feature by adding cost and a non-waranteed ad-hoc component that the owner must screw with at daylight savings time twice a year on top of only not being able to run the dishwasher, washing machine, shower or sink at any second of the day?

    How did he install the tankless without even knowing the gas line run? A tankless requires more BTU, so I don't think these plumbers even opened the wall to see the gas line or size. If that's the case, stove or furnace won't fully work because now your stealing btus
