      You have two Expansion tanks on the table (2 sizes), why did you use the smaller one? Does it matter if you would have used the larger tank? Are all the expansion tanks good to use for all types of water heaters? I have a 40-gallon natural gas water heater, what is the best size expansion tank I should install?

    Looks good, Dennis.
    We also put a valve at the tank, for easier swap. By orienting the tank with potable connection on top you eliminate air in the tank, also if bladder fails you have less water spillage when replacing.
    Your right about tight, too. It’s easy to damage brass threads especially when using Teflon tape and dope, but it’s a great joint when done right.

    Most manufacturers require the expansion tank to be not less than 18" from the cold water inlet on the top of the water heater. As a former city building inspector I have had to many plumbers to relocate the expansion tank. Always read the installation guide because each manufacturer has a set of installation requirements. Other than that it is a very helpful video.

    Nice video. I might have missed this. Is this the correct orientation for the expansion tank; connect it on the bottom and the air intake on top? The reason I am confused, when looking at the picture for the link of the tank below, it looks like the right side up shows the tank is the opposite by the label on the tank. Common sense would give me the answer, but I guess I have none and was wondering if the label is wrong-side up.

    Is it safe to test the pressure and adjust the pressure while the expansion tank is already installed it already exists in the home I just bought. I just want to make sure it was done properly or do I need to shut down the entire system and uninstall it to check the pressure and adjust if needed?

    My expansion tank was put on the hot side when the house was built. After 14 years I needed a new water heater and it was out on the hot side too. Now we are selling and the home inspector said we should switch it to the inlet or cold side.

    thanks for the video, I was looking into installing an expansion tank mostly because when I close a faucet I hear the pipis banging. Sadly my water heater is installed directly soldered to copper pipes, no flexible. I will need to hire a plumber to put a T in there, or may be I can install it somewhere else.

    Did you put a copper T on top of the steel inlet of the water tank? I'm concerned about corrosion at the contact between different metals.

    • @dennistheplumber
      @dennistheplumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually copper is more prone to dielectric corrosion. That’s why I used brass fittings. Brass is safe when in contact with other metals.

    I like your tip on grinding the top nipple for attaching the water supply line. I spent two hours today trying to get the cold water supply line to not leak when I had to replace the water heater in a rental unit. I tried replacing the washer with a new one (Everbilt), but it was not even half as thick as the original one. Junk rubber washer IMO. I then tried flipping the original one upside down. Still got a small leak. I gave up for the night and had 4 fingers of vodka to take away the frustration. Tomorrow I will exchange the black steel nipple that was originally on there with a brass one that has been filed down. Hopefully this will fix the leak. You are right, there is no flat surface on those black steel nipples.

      @@SLickev92 Lol, I fixed it, but I don't remember how. I have a recollection of buying a thicker washer. I just looked back at my Amazon history, and found that I had ordered a Danco 65884B Water Heater Supply Line Washer. I think that's what I tried and it worked.

    I have used the concrete floor as a file before.But I never had expansion tank on my house. There is supposed to be a back flow on every home to protect the public water. So I guess I'm breaking the law. Straight from the main to water heater for all my life. But I never use flex ,I always solder it or as of lately there is a couple pro press joints .. I heard it was a need for an expansion tank But I don't see it,I see it as a new rule that popped up somewhere...But I don't do plumbing on peoples houses either.. It has to be a rule implemented after the 90's.I have no idea when the codes for expansion tanks were introduced and I probably need to read up,But it's working out without one here and always has... Good video young man, Happy Holidays

    There was 80 lb of pressure on the main depending on what time of the day that could be very high here where I am over 90 lbs we need to install a pressure reducing valve and I'll put the expansion tank on the hot side of the hot water tank.

    Expansion tanks can be installed straight up, instead of to the side(this video). Any benefits to the side install. Straight up, all weight of expansion tank will be directly on HWH, instead of pipe.

    80 lbs of pressure means you should probably reduce the pressure. When you set the pressure on an expansion tank. It has to be 3-5lbs higher than the system. Or it won’t work.

    I have a leak on the fittings/pipe connected to the expansion tank above the hot water tank. I'm thinking to replace the fittings myself, first time though. Besides turning off the cold water valve, maybe the water tank burner also? What else do I need to do before removing all the fittings part? Thanks,

      What is the overall pressure in the plumbing system? Measure right after the pressure regulator.

    • @rancetyau7192
      @rancetyau7192 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dennistheplumber pressure is about 80 psi when I measure where the expansion tank is. There’s a 150 psi pressure release valve on the tank that never activates. However the one on the roof blows daily during peak hours 11am - 2pm. I’d have to buy a brass tee to measure the pressure near the solar panel on the roof. The tank may be way oversized. 120ga for two adults and three toddlers that we bathe together.
