  • Hello fellow riders/youtube people.
    I've been away for a while but I'm back with a new video, today we're setting the valves in kawasaki versys.
    A complicated operation that requires patience and basic skill. It's not something that everyone can do on their own, but maybe my video will help you with that.
    Enjoy.

    Congratulations Andy, I notice that you have great preparation also on a mechanical level. You really set the bar high in this video.
    It is a job that should absolutely be done at a specialized workshop which I highly recommend to those who don't have all this great manual skill and technical preparation.
    You're great Andy, really well done.

      @@vitocibelli942 thanks and yes, I do not recommend to do that if anyone don't have any skills, it is difficult job and it is very easy to make mistake. If you not sure about that just leave it to the specialized workshop, otherwise, saving money may turn out to be a big expense. Take care🙂

      I had a Jag shop for a while, these are pretty decent compared to a Jaguar. Same valvetrain setup, cams have to come out to get to everything, except there are also head bolts through some of the cam bearing caps so you have to pull the caps one at a time, put the head bolt back in with a spacer, torque it back down, then move to the next cap. THEN you would have the camshaft out of the way and could start pulling lifters and shims.

    Hi Andy, many thanks for the video, it was extremely helpful.
    I've just done the clearances on my z1000sx. The bike has 37k and it's the first time they've been done. It was running well but when I checked the clearances there were 7 that were out of spec and 4 that were borderline. I adjusted them and all was looking good until I came to sync the throttle bodies. Once again this has never been done on my bike. The engine appears to run ok (as far as i can tell without reassembly and a test ride) but the gauge on cylinder 4 has excessive flutter, making it impossible to get a good reading. I triple checked the clearances and have also swapped the coil and plug with another cylinder but the issue remains (it's not the gauge). Any ideas what might be causing this?
    I've just ordered a compression tester and will check the readings, I'm expecting number 4 to be low as i think it might be a valve or head gasket issue but would appreciate any advice you may be able to offer?
    Thanks in advance.

    • @MotoAndy
      @MotoAndy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only thing I can tell you is to check, check and check again. There can be no mistakes in this job, if it was better before than after, it means that something went wrong. Check the gaps, settings and timing many times. Before you start removing the head to look for gasket leaks, check everything and rule out the possibility of a mistake. It's hard to give good advice from a distance. Good luck.

    • @ianfutube
      @ianfutube 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MotoAndy @@MotoAndy thanks for the response Andy. I've got the compression tester now and will be checking everything again this weekend. Hopefully something will show up that I've missed, I want to avoid the head removal if at all possible. Might increase the clearance on the intake valves for cylinder 4 slightly so that they are on the larger side of the tolerance.

      @@ianfutube have you figured it out? Would be nice to know for future reference

    • @ianfutube
      @ianfutube 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mech.E Hi, Yes, it's all sorted now. Turned out to be a stupid mistake when using the gauges. The ones I bought came with some airflow restrictors but they weren't fitted. For some reason on the early model z1000sx the vacuum feeds on the throttle bodies are small on cylinders 1 through to 3 with cylinder 4 having a much larger diameter. This means that when you connect the gauges there is a lot more flutter on cylinder 4. Basically I had to install the dampers/flow restrictors into each tube leading to each gauge and adjust the damper to get a steady reading.
      This allowed me to balance them successfully and at 37k miles it's now running beautifully. Just done a 1500 mile trip to Scotland and I honestly don't think it's ever run as nicely 👍

    • @glennozrxful
      @glennozrxful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotoAndy Strangest thing. I removed the cam tension-er and placed it on my work bench. When I came back a little later a small ball bearing was also magically present. The only thing I could figure was the ball bearing may have been inside the tension-er? It seems it fits perfectly inside and that the rod and spring would go in and and work together? I'm really going a little crazy about it. Do you know if there a a schematic breakdown of the Versys 1000 tension-er? When I look at most schematics they don't show the internals of the tension-er only the whole tension-er as a complete part. Awesome video by the way and thanks in advance for your help.

    • @MotoAndy
      @MotoAndy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it seems to me that everything should be identical, as far as I know, kawasaki did not introduce any changes to the engine design, the only change is the ride by wire throttle, but it's electronics so it doesn't have much to do with the design of the engine itself. I would ask a Kawasaki dealer to be sure.

    I am acquiring a 2015 Versys 1000 with 17k mi (27k km) and expect to have to adjust the valves as the previous owner has no service history and only rode it for around 500 miles. I have two questions for you:
    1. Have/did you sync the throttle bodies after the valve clearance adjustment? I read that doing both greatly improves the performance of the bike.
    2. Was the liquid gasket something you did as insurance against leaks? I have never used liquid gasket and reused old gaskets in the past for valve clearance adjustments however this time around I will definitely be using new gaskets where possible when I button it back up.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @MotoAndy
      @MotoAndy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jack, congrats with your new bike, have fun with it.
      1.I did the synchronization first, then I set the valves, but if you do both at once, your versys will be happy for sure
      2.the liquid gasket must be applied where I applied it, as recommended in the service manual. In my other motorcycle, I put a similar gasket without liquid sealant and it ran oil right after the first firing in these places. I also recommend using it so that you don't have to disassemble it twice
