Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE - 3 years user review
It's been seven years since I bought my first Versys. I have ridden over 70,000 km on them, but so far I have not managed to make a video review of this motorcycle, which makes me feel a bit ashamed. So it's time for my opinion on the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE, you may agree with it or not, but I think it's worth watching and discussing this topic. Enjoy watching.

Well, dropping a bike is never fun, especially when it's our own beloved motorcycle, and it can happen to anyone, even the best riders will drop their motorcycles sometimes. Rumor has it, that the person who didn't drop the bike is not a real motorcyclist, I don't know how true it is, but I certainly have nothing to be happy about. Great review, as I'm considering the Versys 1k as well. I see the Ninja 1000s make great power with an exhaust and a tune. (Almost 140bhp at the rear tire.) I'm sure the 1100 engine will be even more capable. Were you considering these modifications for more power?
Does the Versys have dual brakes? If I use the front brake, will the rear brake also connect? Thank you.
Thanks Andy, great review...very honest about the negatives too. Just to add to the discussion, i have the 2020 my. Things i love are...big display screen, the electronic suspension, the smooth engine and forgiving in any gear like you said , the light clutch and easy raise onto the stand. Also, plenty of servicing information available including the great videos you shared on that. My only dislike really is just how difficult the balance point of the bike makes it to raise the front end for maintenance. I had a couple of scary moments recently...if you jack it under the sump, the bike lifts straight up rather than rocking back and is really unstable. Jacking from the exhaust is better but still a bit scary. Its obviously from the weight centre of the bike being towards the front, but i guess the payback is the easy stand use....still...i had brown trousers a couple of times in my recent maintenance work 😂. Great work Andy, you're a great point of reference and ambassador for the Versys 👍
Brilliant review Andy- so I’ve subscribed 😉
thanks, appreciated 😁
8:51 are you sure it is 360 not 180? ;-)
It seems really easy with the center stand, but how easy is it, if you have the bile fully loaded/overloaded with luggage?
of course, the more luggage, the greater the weight and you have to use a little more force, besides, a lot also depends on how the weight is distributed, but despite this, the central stand is placed in such a strategic place that when you press it with your foot, it causes the motorcycle to tilt backwards and a light pull on the handlebars is enough and the Versys jumps on the stand itself
@MotoAndy it sounds great, I have a Vstrom XT, and one of my biggest problems with is is the side stand. Even without luggage it's a struggle to get it on the centre stand. Even worse is getting it off the stand, it comes down really quickly, so you risk dropping the bike. 😐
The best way is to go to a Kawasaki dealer and have them show you, once you try it yourself you will know that it is what you are looking for. The Versys is a heavy bike but its balance is excellent and it makes it very easy to ride.
I just replaced my indicators with LED line (there are few LEDs there and while indicating they create the line) - super cool
Hi Andy. My 2012 Versys first generation is still running with 143000 kms. I'm still happy to ride it and I'm not going to change it. Even it's not a perfect bike (what bike is perfect?) I have always the same good feelings with it. Abour quick shifter, I still don't understand why have one on a touring bike, we are not on a track for race. I made a long trip with a Yamaha Niken that's equipped with. I noticed that below 4000 rpm it's impossible to use it ; as your one it's hard to move and the reverse use is impossible. So I cannot understand its usefullness. My Versys is enough pretty for me and if I had to change it it will be difficult to make a choice. Thanks for your videos that are always nice and objective.
I always say that every motorcycle has to find its rider, yours has definitely found its, and with over 140k km on the clock, congratulations. Quickshifters were originally created for racing motorcycles so changing gears works best at high revs, so theoretically they are not needed on a touring motorcycle, but I think they make life easier, provided they work well. cheers
I bought crash bars for my bike and it took me 24 hours to check if they work - they did ;-)
oh yes they work great which doesn't mean you have to test them right away,😉 now I understand why you need good gloves😅
@@MotoAndy ha ha ha, funny? I dropped bike of course - who did not?
relax man, it was just a joke, even the best rider will drop his bike and there is no shame in that. The most important thing is that the crash bars did their job and the bike is not broken or scratched.😁
since I started using earplugs I do not ride without them ANYWHERE ANYTIME. I always listen to the music while riding and my earplugs are quite ok with music while still protecting from the wind. also helmet matters - I use Schuberth C5 and I will never ever replace it with any other brand - if you are still looking for nice ones try this: "iFi Ear Plugs" - I use each pair for around 1 month (every day) then I take new ones - they are amazing - 37db - probably the most silent in the market - around 2 Euro per pair - btw they are NOT motorcycle earplugs - they are general use ones but they work like a charm
I am afraid they will not work very well when it comes to protection (if you fall) - I would rather go for more protective option
The truth is that no summer gloves will protect you as well as thick Gortex gloves, unfortunately riding in such gloves in the heat is torture. Personally, I think that everyone should use what they feel safe in. Stay safe.
@@MotoAndy you are right but goretex is not for protection - it is only a membrane against the water. there are summer gloves that are light(er) but still protective. but you are right - everybody is the owner of his ... body ;-)
yes of course I know that Gortex is a membrane what did I mean, usually Gortex gloves are much thicker which provides better protection however you are right there are certainly good racing summer gloves with excellent protection. I do not ride sports but touring from time to time letting my imagination run wild😉😅
@@MotoAndy me neither - I have Tracer 9 GT, not a racing bike
I had a tracer 900 before and I can safely say that it's more of a sports machine than a touring one and you can easily straighten bananas on it.😆Tracer is a great bike but not comfortable enough for me so I switched to Versys
man, this review is like no others: so humble, so thorough and so to the point that 99% of other review videos done by... "professionals" shall call you for some lessons HOW TO DO IT PROPERLY ;-)
Thanks man, I really appreciated, glad you like it, take care cheers.
My Versys does not have the quick shifter issues you have. I simply hit the lever and it shifts gear instantly. A QS is for the rapid accelerations and must be operated with determination. Maybe yours need adjustment?
Hi, It's possible my QS needs some adjustment, or maybe I'm just weird ;-), take care.
@MotoAndy you are not weird. You are not the one in need of adjustment, only your QS is. Well unless you operate the gear lever incorrectly, as in slowly, afraid to use it, but I don’t think that's the case. My guess is your problems has to do with the amount of milliseconds the ignition has to be cut, before the gears switch position.
i have this bike since 3 years , its not best , but reliable. Quckshifter is not qood , brakes are good but abs system is terrible , seat is hard, oem bridgestone tires are average. Engine is very smooth , front screen have good wind protection , engine sound is the best thing of this bike. average consumption is about 6-6,5 lt. overall is not good as 1250gs or multistrada v4 but better then most bikes of 900 cc league
Hi, thanks for your comment. I don't know what your riding style is but the fuel consumption you are reporting is very high, I have never exceeded 6 l/100km even with very sporty riding. The fuel consumption in my Versys fluctuates between 5.3 and 5.6 liters. Take care.
Thanks for your review. But I find it hard to understand your comments about the GT package. You say the side cases are “not practical”, without giving any reason. I’ve done several longish trips with mine and have no complaints. Totally waterproof, and big enough for a full-face helmet. Replacing them with SHAD cases, like you have done, presumably loses the very practical use of one key for ignition, luggage and seat removal. Likewise the top case, It is simply GIVI with a Kawasaki name badge. What reason would GIVI have to supply a major customer like Kawasaki with an inferior product? It makes no sense. After 16,000 miles, including many long days, I have never had any discomfort from the seat. Finally, I do wonder if your QS is functioning properly. It is not designed for use at low rpm or low speeds, given that it is race technology and meant to aid quick up and down shifts during hard acceleration and braking. Using it at low rpm and/or around town could well damage it, particularly during the early “running-in” period.
Hi, thanks for the comment. The question why I changed the side cases from original to SHAD can be found in my other video th-cam.com/video/zPnhUuzWu2A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fWW6b4uw8arDCknv. Topcase, I don't know why the top case is of lower quality, you'd have to ask GIVI about that, I had original Givi cases and those from Kawasaki of course and believe me there is a difference, and it's not just my opinion, many of my subscribers also complained about the quality of the top case. As for the seat, I never said it was bad, most V1 owners are happy with it, however everyone has different body types, different postures and everyone sits on their butt differently, so one person will ride all day and nothing and another will be groaning in pain after 4 hours. So again, the seat in the Versys is one of the better motorcycle seats, but that doesn't mean it's perfect for everyone. As for the quickshifter, I know how it should work, I know it's not a low-speed toy, despite that I don't think it works as it should, maybe there's something wrong with QS in my versys, I don't know, I haven't checked. In any case, despite its flaws I still use it, at most I curse under my breath from time to time. Take care, cheers.
Pozdrawiam i wszystkiego dobrego!

Does it wobble on highspeed >170 with that topbox?
Hi. Versys is not a sports bike and I rarely reach such speeds, although it happened to me and I always ride with the top box and I have never felt a speed wobble, so in my opinion, no.
Hi Andy. Thank you for your video; you almost made me want to change my old 2015 Versys for the new one. But like you, I love this bike; it suits me perfectly. Since I'm only 1.88m tall, it's just the right size for me. I've noticed all the qualities and flaws you mentioned. I never really paid attention to the fact that the cable throttle made it brutal... but that's probably because I ride chill. But now I'm unhappy... you've really made me want to change my old horse. Thank you for your videos, and safe travels.
Thanks and your very welcome. The best way to change your mind is to go to your dealer for a test ride, there is only twoo ways, you like it or not. Good luck and take care
Thanks Andy, My Gen 2 is ten years old soon and still haven't found a bike worth the cost to change... maybe a facelifted 1100 will be here in 2026?. Really enjoyed your Pan Am comparison review. More of thiose in 2025 please!
Thanks, glad you liked the video, I`ll try my best for more , cheers.
Cruise control?
Hi. Yes you are right, I completely forgot to mention cruise control, and it is a wonderful invention, very useful, I use it on every long trip and so far it has worked reliably.
@ thank you for the video - great work. I love my 2016, and plan one day to replace it - CC is something I'm looking forward to and glad to hear it works well.
Could you share with us your comments about confort issues on rough roads.( Pothole , hump , etc ...)( I am not talking about off road ) and did you make any adjustment at KECS values ( compression and rebound) for like these roads
Hi, It all depends on the quality of the bumps and the speed at which you ride, I recently rode the Transfagarasan in Romania which looks like Swiss cheese and it was not a pleasant ride but I did not complain about any back or other butt pain. So in my opinion the Versys absorbs bumps quite well.
Unpretentious and honest review, thank you. What do you think about the comparison with the Tracer 9gt? Is it worth replacing the Yamaha for a Kawasaki?
I had a Tracer 9 GT + 6 months ago and I have a Versys 1000 SE . Absolutely difference is so much.Versys really is better than Tracer 9 GT especially comfort issues
Thanks and your welcome. In 2017 I bought a Tracer 900 and 8 months later I traded it for a Versys. I think that's probably the best explanation of which bike is better. Versys is 300% more comfortable to travel.
Story of my life, after 8 months of Tracer ownership, Versys has arrived in the stable
Thanks so much for these videos ,I learn a lot of information about Versys 1000 Se 🎉
Your very welcome

Andy, I very much enjoyed your ride which was accented by the drone views. I also liked seeing the local culture along the way. Question, are you able to look over the windshield?
thanks, I'm glad you liked the vid. It depends, without the clip-on I can see just above the screen, if the clip-on is on then not, but it doesn't bother me too much, I prefer this than wind noise in my helmet.
Nice video. It is human nature, part of our survival instincts, to focus on what we perceive as danger. That's obviously what you did at those two occasions - you looked at the road side, where you didn't want to go. Since motorcycles goes where the rider looks, well, you almost crashed. That's why it's important for us riders, to keep reminding our self not to follow our instincts, but to look at where we want to go. Even experienced riders can become unfocused, letting the instincts take over, focus at the somewhat dangerous road side, and bang, one more solo motorcycle accident. Everybody can be tired while riding, in which case one should slow down a bit to compensate. Yeah I know, it reduces fun, but it gets you home alive.
Thanks, glad you like the video and thanks for this comment, a very accurate comment, nothing to add, nothing to take away. As you wrote, my eyesight was not where it needed to be due to a sleepless night, as I mentioned in the video. Of course, I slowed down to a speed that I was sure would not harm me (although it may look different in the video). So the conclusion is simple, if you don't feel like Rossi, don't act like one. ;-) cheers.
Wow, Romania is much more beautiful than I imagined (nice work on the drone cam) and the roads look really quiet. I hate those days where for whatever reason you aren't at your best on the bike. Glad you negotiated your way through it safely anyway 👍 Thanks Andy, you are really covering all corners of Europe !
Thanks Paul, yes it is beautiful country, the roads.....these are very interesting and winding roads, unfortunately their technical condition is poor, which surprises me because it is a very tourist area and maintaining these roads should be in the interest of the country. If you compare similar areas in the Alpine countries, the roads are of the best quality because they bring profits, I would gladly pay for a good mountain road in exchange for high quality travel. Unfortunately, Romania will not be able to match the Alpine countries in this respect for a long time. But it doesn't affect the views of nature and that makes me happy :-)

Thanks for the good test. I was deciding between the Versys1000 and the Versys 1100 and the GSX-S1000 GX. A few days ago I bought a new one without QS (I don't like it and don't need it on this type of motorcycle) - a sold-out Versys 1000 with a 20% discount and a 4-year warranty. I look forward to more tests and information👍
thanks and have fun with new bike 😁 next week on my channel 3 years Versys 1000 SE review 😉
Discussion with my dealer suggests that to change to the 1100 from my 2020 1000 SE GT with 16,000 miles will likely cost upwards of £10,000. Just doesn’t seem worth it, but I await a test ride in the new year. PS I agree with you re the RIDEOLOGY app, I never use it PPS I can’t understand your criticism of the QS on the 1000. I love mine, use it all the time. But of course, always as instructed in the owners manual ie above 2500 rpm and with a closed throttle when downshifting. I wonder did you follow these instructions, especially during the first 1000 miles? Great review, thanks!
Hi thanks, yes, your right, test it first ... Well, the problem with the quickshifter is that, as you mentioned, you have to change gears above 2500rpm, which is idiotic to me in a motorcycle that has such a flexible engine that you can start from 6th gear. The second problem is its inaccuracy - if you push the lever too lightly, it can fall into the space between the gears, which is very painful for the owners ears, believe me. Yes I do downshift with closed throttle. Of course, everyone rides differently, so for one person the quickshifter is great, for another it doesn't work as it should (according to his opinion). So let's end by saying - agree to disagree...take care, cheers.
@ I apologise for prolonging the discussion! But it seems to me that a lot of people expect a QS to function like the auto gearbox in a car. But the QS technology came to us from bike racing, where it was designed for quick up and down shifting at high rpm and under hard acceleration and deceleration. So I use mine on country roads for overtaking and on the twisties, never in town, and it works very well. Anyone who wants a fully auto bike should buy a Gold Wing with DCT, or a scooter! I have heard of bikes being damaged by inappropriate use of the QS, particularly at low rpm and low speeds. So it pays to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. This doesn’t just apply to Kawasaki! Happy riding
Comments are for commenting, discussing and exchanging opinions, so you're not prolonging anything, I'm glad that there is so much interest in this topic, and as long as it's civilized I'll gladly join the argument.🙂. In the Versys 1100 QS works (allegedly) at 1500 rpm... so it can be done! I'm very curious if it will be better, I clearly have to go for a test ride 😁 and you are right, a motorcycle should be used as recommended by the manufacturer, which does not mean that everything works as it should, there are no perfect motorcycles🤔
Witaj. Z góry Ci dziękuję i pozdrawiam
Thank You Sr. your videos are very helpful for the versys owners.
your very welcome😁
I rode the Stelvio on my Versys in 2022 . . . fantastic views and one of the best biking trips I've done. Great video, Andy.
Thanks. Indeed, the Stelvio is impressive, but it's a good idea to hit it when there aren't too many people around, otherwise it gets terribly crowded in the corners. I was also very impressed by the Grossglockner, especially the second half (going north). cheers
is this Versys 1100 SE released yet?
As far as I know it will be avilable from 1 januari, although I expect it will be available to friends sooner ;-)
@@MotoAndy im hoping it will be in the coming few weeks. I have been waiting since they announced it. I was going to buy the V 1000 SE and then when I heard the news ever since....
It`s only 3 weeks left in this year so be patient ...
Excellent video! Can you describe how the Versys 1000 SE compares to the Tracer 9 GT? Does anyone watching and reading care to describe how these bikes compare? Thanks!
Hi. maybe the reason why no one compares the Tracer with the Versys is because they are two very different motorcycles. I changed from Tracer 900 to Versys 1000 because of comfort, Tracer is a very nice motorcycle, agile and fast, fun to ride, good brakes, but it does not compare to the comfort of Versys. Tracer is more of a motorcycle for everyday riding and is not particularly suitable for long journeys. I drove Tracer on long journeys and they were not comfortable. I sold Tracer after 8 months of use. Here I am 7 years and two Versys later and I don't regret this choice. Maybe one day I will make video and I will compare these two motorcycles. We`ll se, cheers
