- I've been having a lot of fun testing out the upcoming Blazar Nero 1.5x anamorphic adapter.

This sample footage was shot using the Helios 58mm as the taking lens combined with the Canon 0.71x focal reducer on the RED Komodo 6k (& an H&Y VND). All footage shot in RED RAW LQ.
Please note that this was shot using an early pre-production model of the Nero adapter with a vintage Helios lens and a canon 0.71x focal reducer - in my testing I found that the focal reducer did accentuate chromatic aberration quite a bit, however stopping down the Helios to around f/4 cleaned things up a lot.
Generally the CA without the focal reducer is pretty controlled, even more if using modern glass for the taking lens - but I'll cover this in my review.
I've also tested a more recent pre-production model of the adapter and the flaring is greatly reduced from what you see here, although I did quite enjoy the flaring in this footage - it was quite intense, so I think it's probably a good thing they've tuned it down a bit.
Overall I'm really excited to show more footage from this adapter - and will have a full review dropping in the next week, shot on both the RED Komodo and LUMIX S1. FYI Blazar is the lens company formally known as Great Joy.

Yeah it's pretty close to them isn't it! Love Khruangbin.
@@EdProsser yeah it’s more than pretty close. As an ex-music producer of 25 years sound is my thing so I’m noticing even details like the reverbs are made in their likeness. But it just means they are doing something right!
About the adapter though, have you tried it on a 77mm diameter or larger taking lens?
77 diameter would be too large unfortunately. I think the largest lenses I tried we're the LUMIX S primes

I noticed that the flares were strongly blue. In your setup, does that happen with only the helios and the focal reducer? I'm curious if the anamorphic adapter is cooling down the color of the Helio's flare.
This was an early pre-production model where the flaring was a lot more pronounced, in subsequent versions it's been tuned to be much more reduced, but is still blue.
The focal reducer definitely amplifies stuff like CA and I assume is also doing the same to flaring.
The more recent model I've tested is harder to flare

I'm keen on seeing how the adapter looks with a 16:9 sensor readout - I assume you shot this in some kind of anamorphic mode?
1.5X times on Komodo uses 16:9 portion of sensor.

Out of curiosity, did you try it on your Vespids at all? I’m assuming it would heavily vignette due to how small the blazar is right?..
Yes correct it wouldn't work with the Vespids because they have too large a lens diameter.
@@EdProsser just noticed today how small the front element is on the 40 and 75mm, wondering if the blazar on rails butted up right next to the glass would work?🤔
@@JosephBaca813 the Vespids? You'd probably get some mad vignetting - and you'd need to use step down rings - but I'd love to hear how it goes if you try it?!

No stops or aperture settings on the lens, but a real nice focus ring.

Do you know which factory the lens came from? I've heard it makes a difference in the sharpness and contrast by a lot
For the Helios? No no idea!

I believe it's 0.6m, so pretty good!
So nice! Wich aspect ratio have you choosen for a 1.5x squeeze with the RED/Lumix S1? (16:9, DCI or 4:3)
I can't remember the tech specs off the top of my head - the Komodo has a specific 1.5x shooting mode can't quite remember the LUMIX S1 - someone lent me theirs and had it setup for anamorphic shooting already... I think it was 6K open gate 3:2

does it work in full frame mode without vignetting or must be set for apsc with blazar?
It'll depend on your camera / taking lens but balazar can shoot on full frame

@@Arkadiusz4321 Yes you can shoot in standard 16:9 with the helios and de-squeeze in post to get a much wider frame

Would this setup work on full frame? I have an S5 like you...
Yes totally! S5 you have to shoot in APS-C mode for anamorphic although the S5ii will do full frame open gate.
I notice the chromatic aberration is pretty intense in the high contrast areas. Any idea on if they plan to tone it down in the final version?
Yeah the more recent version I used was better on this - also bare in mind there's a focal reducer and shooting wide open on the Helios = 3 stacked lenses, which will amplify CA.
Compatible with Zeiss Batis?
Depends on the lens diameter - so you'd have to check the lens spec against the adapter spec as I've not shot with them
