Great list! Personally I really like the Canadian channel DIY Danie, she's been making a big effort to make sure the projects she DIYs are now pieces that you would keep. I like her "Can I make it for cheaper" series, especially the one with the mirrors. Some of the rest take more time and familiarity with wood working, but she shows all of the step-backs and frustrations in the learning process which makes it a lot more accessible. I really loved her angled Forrest green slat wall I saw her do for a nursery, and I feel like I saw a ton of angled slat walls done after her.
Nick, I’m not that interested in DIY because I’m like you, most look cheap and furthermore ain’t nobody got time for that. But I clicked on this video because I always learn something from you, even if it’s from a passing random comment. Also, you always make me lol at least once. You are not only knowledgeable but always hilarious, entertaining and never mean spirited.
THIS! It's so frustrating to see all these channels talking about how 'cheap' it is to DIY something or thrift-flip when they have an obscene amount of expensive tools already!
And the time that goes into the DIY and the time to acquire the skills. And the space you need for the work in progress. If you do things yourself, you should enjoy it. You shouldn't just do it on a whim thinking it is cheaper than buying the stuff. Many things really need dedication.
Well you dont start with 1000's of dollars worth of tools right away. You start with 1 or 2 hand and basic power tools and very small projects. As your skill set improve so too does your collection of tools and your projects become increasingly intricate. I started with a power drill, two power saws and a stack of salvaged fence runners. Made some pretty funny looking coffee tables to start, but the pride of having created something out of nothing was beyond immense and i still love those tables today even though a true master craftsmen would probably fall over laughing at seeing it. From that point on my husband started gifting me tools for birthdays and christmases and my projects always improve. The main driver though is all about the personal satisfaction of accomplishment.

Nick, I can't believe I'm a 72-year-old gramma and I just love all of your ideas and agree with all of your opinions about decorating!! You are so practical but so fresh in your ideas. I wouldn't miss your TH-cam broadcasts, they are so much fun. About the DIY thing, I think a lot of young people just wanted a lot of high-end pieces but couldn't afford them, so they started doing a few things here and there, hoping that it would look pretty good and maybe even pass for high end. An idea like that catches on and pretty soon, EVERYONE thinks it's so cool. But like so many really popular things, it got kind of carried away with itself and now you see all kinds of DIY that is not high-end looking, although it is attractive. AND I've noticed a lot of repetitiveness (is that even a word?) in the DIY community. like, if you glue a bunch of hemp style rope around it, it's suddenly high end. I'm a 73-year-old broad. And I'm BoHo and collecting and anything else that I like. And some of his stuff is hysterical. I do not DIY. Because I can find something funky and make it nice and paint it if I want. But like talking about pool noodles. I didn't even know if those things were until some kid in the neighborhood showed them to me. Just of no interest. But he is so funny you were just gonna love this video
Oh my god, how refreshing to hear a youtuber telling their audience to just get over it with the unnecessary commenting about unimportant things! Love it! So many other youtubers that take their two, three minutes to apologizes and put disclaimers, but you just "get over it, ok?" :D Great, keeps my faith in humanity up! :D Oh, and how refreshing, as well, that somebody finally told the truth about so many of those DIY projects, that they more often than not look cheep, simple or just unstylish! I enjoyed this a lot. I'm from a generation that did most everything for ourselves---sewed curtains, painted walls, reclaimed claw-foot bathtubs, etc. We built a traditional home in the country (because we knew it would sell to city people for a weekend home) and my husband built a mantle and surround for the fireplace out of plywood and trim elements you can buy at the lumberyard. Everyone though we found an antique mantle at an auction. I agree that a lot of the DIY stuff looks cheap, but if you know what you're doing, you can save a lot of money.

So many people assume that art made by a professional artist costs millions of dollars and don't even consider shopping for a unique, handmade piece because they think they can't afford it. Which is so sad! There is SO much art out there for all price ranges, and wouldn't people rather support individual artists than hand their money over to some big corporation? As far as the plaster paintings go, I'm not sure what plaster they are using, but if it's typical plaster of Paris, it's not flexible and it shouldn't be applied to a flexible support like a stretched canvas or it will crack eventually. Better to apply it to a panel (thin MDF would work) and then frame the panel. (There's a reason we go to school to learn this stuff!)
omg I love how you featured an artist who makes similar stuff to the DIYs. I would love more videos where you take an aesthetic or items from like target/ikea and then recommend artists whose original work is in line with that aesthetic who we can support instead!

Yes! Just because it can be made doesn’t mean it should be made. First time I’ve seen someone talk about DIY in this way. So many are made from things that don’t break down and often combine materials so they can’t be recycled and it drives me nuts. But I do love a good DIY that is quality and won’t be thrown in landfill within a year. Thank you for highlighting some good ones ☺️
I love DIYs that actually just the first steps of a proper trade/skill. You know the type! Make your own art using some very specific steps, make your own furniture using really simple patterns, pillows, embroidery, ect.

I'm really happy to see that you mentioned the textured art. I needed a huge piece above our fireplace when we moved in to our new home and art just wasn't in the budget, so for $100 (canvas, tools, and plaster), I made it myself. While I'm not exactly getting compliments on it, it does the trick, and people are shocked when they hear that I DIYd it.
Everything cheap looks better in photos and TH-cam videos--DIY's for home decor, wish clothing hauls, Instagram fashion influencers, etc. We don't have cameras that capture that cheapness accurately yet
I agree. Nor can cameras catch the beauty of lovely woodgrain or natural stone, or even of oil paintings. A photo/video of painted wood may look prettier than a photo of the same wood with a clear finish, but real life could be the opposite.
I have a few of those plaster canvasses in my house . Super easy way to enhance a space. I use Sheetrock 45 to make them. Another plus is I can use that material to patch my walls
As an industrial designer my DIY's are a little bit more involved 😁 I designed many of my own cabinets and my TV stand(definitely a unique piece). I have bold ideas of creating an Arts and Crafts/Art Nouveau inspired moody wallpaper, designing and DIY'ing my own original Tiffany inspired glass light fixture, and my own line of earthenware, so on... I think learning the basic principles of design would improve %90 of DIY's out there.
Where do you recomend getting basic design knowledge? I'm actually designing my bedroom and while I have some architecture background, I'm not a designer nor architect (I will bring it to an actual architect when actually doing it, but yeah). I like bureau desks, 4 post beds (ie aestetic mosquito nets), an oriental style low desk + floorsitting and also hammocks... it looks like a mess just like that, but I did sculped the pieces in clay and made a miniature and it looked quite harmonius, even though I did it based on practicality, playfulness and preference and not actually have any education on it. I would apreciate guidance.

Agree that these are all awesome!! Honestly my favorite diys are people making furniture for their pets :) anything store-bought for pets has such a high markup because of how niche the products are, even for things that are relatively simple like cat shelves, a scratching post, or a dog house. You see something like a scratching post that is just wood and carpeting costing upwards of $150, but you know the materials cost more like $30. LOVE to see people making those themselves, with their own pet's needs in mind!
I love the idea of making things but I stick to jewelry, yarn, fabric, candles, and small things involving acrylic paint. Even so, I am overtly critical and seldom happy with my creation. They usually don’t see light of the day. Btw, Nick you are the perfect dinner party guest. Having you doing your monologue would never be boring ;)
Hilarious video Nick! I actually wondered if you had had too much coffee for lunch, or had been hitting that bottle on the cabinet behind you, before this shoot. (I did look back at the video from 3 days ago and saw that the bottle had the same amount of beverage in it as it does in today's.) Your DIY is your highly verbal style skills, so don't think that just because your canvas is video, that you aren't an artist. Have a great weekend, and have a drink to celebrate your own talent.
Loved this! Honestly, I still hate DYIs because I remember the “shabby chic” period when many thought it was perfectly fine to take granny’s, (great granny’s) Antique mahogany, mid century teak furniture and slap on a coat of off-white paint, rough the edges, put on cheap miss-matched knobs - and call it “reclaimed farm house Shabby Chic”. Yes, my own sis did that. Ironically mid century modern skyrocketed in value a few yrs after and today Art Deco is seeing a resurgence. Guess I need to buy some paint stripper stuff. Tragedy. 😢
I’m not much a DIYer, but did haul back some cut down tree trunks from a nearby trail to build a hugelkultur from scratch, ie, dig down two feet into the ground in my back garden and fill it with semi decomposed logs, branches, fall leaves, kitchen organic scraps and topsoil. After the winter season, I added more topsoil with manure and it’s ready for planting.
LOVE this! I have enjoyed all of your videos since October 2021, when I discovered you as I bought a new house. I'm an artist, and one of my areas is the textured art that some people are DIYing now, (with a different artistic approach). It's cool that people have embraced it. I get inspired by your channel in many ways, and want to thank you for acknowledging that there are diy projects that can be classy! Please, PLEASE keep doing what you're doing.

I love the idea of adding doors to things such as bookcases, shoe racks, other compartment blocks to make what would have been just plain shelves or holes something beautiful that also hides what you want to hide and keeps those items clean at the same time. Buying plaster art is super expensive, which is why I love watching people DIY it. I'm going to take a crack at trying it myself because I just can't justify paying $400+ for plaster on a canvas. ETA: we're doing a wood slat wall but I used 1x2s so there's no worrying about cutting a long perfectly straight line. We stained ours in special walnut for warmth, but you can stain or paint them. We're also doing two slat wall closets, like nothing behind the wood slats. Got the inspi when looking at Japandi ideas. It works perfectly for us since we were concerned about ventilation in the closests as we live right next to a body of water and in the Mid-Atlantic, so it can get very humid. Trying to eliminate things, especially linens, from getting sour/musty

Loved this video! I’m with you I’m not a DIYe. I saw a meme that said “why spend seven dollars to buy something when you can spend $93 at the craft store to make the same thing!” This is so true.
I actually love a lot of DIY's. I totally understand what you mean about there being a lot of situations where they don't make sense though. Besides your point about a lot of them not being sustainable, there's also the major pet peeve of mine where if it costs more to make the DIY than it would to purchase it from a professional or a company, it makes absolutely zero sense to me. HOWEVER in recent years there's seem to be a major increase in quality DIY's out there, a lot more power tools and less hot glue. DIY Danie, in my opinion, does some of the most beautiful and impressive DIY's I've ever seen. She also does a whole series of "can I make it for cheaper?" videos where she recreates beautiful but very expensive pieces for a lot less, and honestly, so most of them turn out SO beautifully. I also think Lone Fox does some great Ikea upgrades specifically, he actually recently did a really beautiful Billy Bookcase makeover with the same basement column cover! I absolutely HATE that plaster art. I'm a big colour person so I think that's a major issue about it for me. 90% of them are white on white... barf.
I love DIY's. I'm not much for the artwork type, and i cannot look at a piece of furniture and re-imagine it as something else, but i have furnished most of my home myself with custom built pieces i taught myself how to build over the years. I would never have been able to buy those pieces in a store as those designs do not exist anywhere. But it all started with basic and simple DIY's.

My husband painted a matte black wall in our master bathroom and then we replaced the old mirrors and towel holders with brushed gold finishes. Our Robe hooks, paper holder, and towel rings are Ollie Nickel. I was admittedly hesitant at first, but the room is large and gets a lot of great natural light, it was such a beautiful result.
I could watch a few of these videos, love to see what you “don’t hate” your highest compliment 😂. Drew from lonefox, does some incredible DIY upgrades to ikea furniture ♥️
Love these ones, Nick. I’m thinking instead of a wall of (more) beadboard in my 4’ wide hallway, I may use these shoe units with the slats and stain and shellac them in my warm wood color. It’s a great idea to cover my plaster walls which are already damaged from past wainscoting applications. Love it more because the hall is at my bedroom door and just off the living room where I have no entry and will be putting up a coat rack. Thanks for posting this.
You crack me up - I love that you did this video! I feel the same way about DIY - some can be cheesy but there are some that are worth trying (or buying, lol) I'd love to see more!
Pro-tip for the cabinet doors if you have cats or kids who might easily damage burlap, rattan, or caning... you can head to your local improvement store and get punched metal sheets fairly expensively that would serve the same purpose. You can spray paint them if you want a different color and the patterns available are immense. Everything from classic geometrics to more fanciful or whimsical. We've used these metal panels for several projects in my family because we have cats and cats like to scratch screening. You can also install them on your screened patio doors to prevent scratching as well. You just need tin snips to cut to fit and some sand paper to soften the edges if you don't want to hide them behind some sort of trim.
We used to have Column covers as part of a large fat TV unit, in the good old days. Every evening we would close the two half’s of the cabinet over the front of of the screen, when the TV went off air about 12 midnight. And no, there was no remote control, it was probably also black and white. But it looked like a piece of furniture !! Now I really am old. ! 🤣
I love the terry cloth vases- could be tempted- they remind me of papier-mâché I did as a child. The burlap ikea project looked like a dust trap to me.

I'm really happy to see that you mentioned the textured art. I needed a huge piece above our fireplace when we moved in to our new home and art just wasn't in the budget, so for $100 (canvas, tools, and plaster), I made it myself. While I'm not exactly getting compliments on it, it does the trick, and people are shocked when they hear that I DIYd it.

Everything cheap looks better in photos and TH-cam videos--DIY's for home decor, wish clothing hauls, Instagram fashion influencers, etc. We don't have cameras that capture that cheapness accurately yet
I agree. Nor can cameras catch the beauty of lovely woodgrain or natural stone, or even of oil paintings. A photo/video of painted wood may look prettier than a photo of the same wood with a clear finish, but real life could be the opposite.
I have a few of those plaster canvasses in my house . Super easy way to enhance a space. I use Sheetrock 45 to make them. Another plus is I can use that material to patch my walls
As an industrial designer my DIY's are a little bit more involved 😁 I designed many of my own cabinets and my TV stand(definitely a unique piece). I have bold ideas of creating an Arts and Crafts/Art Nouveau inspired moody wallpaper, designing and DIY'ing my own original Tiffany inspired glass light fixture, and my own line of earthenware, so on... I think learning the basic principles of design would improve %90 of DIY's out there.
Where do you recomend getting basic design knowledge? I'm actually designing my bedroom and while I have some architecture background, I'm not a designer nor architect (I will bring it to an actual architect when actually doing it, but yeah). I like bureau desks, 4 post beds (ie aestetic mosquito nets), an oriental style low desk + floorsitting and also hammocks... it looks like a mess just like that, but I did sculped the pieces in clay and made a miniature and it looked quite harmonius, even though I did it based on practicality, playfulness and preference and not actually have any education on it. I would apreciate guidance.

Agree that these are all awesome!! Honestly my favorite diys are people making furniture for their pets :) anything store-bought for pets has such a high markup because of how niche the products are, even for things that are relatively simple like cat shelves, a scratching post, or a dog house. You see something like a scratching post that is just wood and carpeting costing upwards of $150, but you know the materials cost more like $30. LOVE to see people making those themselves, with their own pet's needs in mind!

I love the idea of making things but I stick to jewelry, yarn, fabric, candles, and small things involving acrylic paint. Even so, I am overtly critical and seldom happy with my creation. They usually don’t see light of the day.

Hilarious video Nick! I actually wondered if you had had too much coffee for lunch, or had been hitting that bottle on the cabinet behind you, before this shoot. (I did look back at the video from 3 days ago and saw that the bottle had the same amount of beverage in it as it does in today's.) Your DIY is your highly verbal style skills, so don't think that just because your canvas is video, that you aren't an artist. Have a great weekend, and have a drink to celebrate your own talent.

Loved this! Honestly, I still hate DYIs because I remember the “shabby chic” period when many thought it was perfectly fine to take granny’s, (great granny’s) Antique mahogany, mid century teak furniture and slap on a coat of off-white paint, rough the edges, put on cheap miss-matched knobs - and call it “reclaimed farm house Shabby Chic”. Yes, my own sis did that. Ironically mid century modern skyrocketed in value a few yrs after and today Art Deco is seeing a resurgence. Guess I need to buy some paint stripper stuff. Tragedy. 😢

I’m not much a DIYer, but did haul back some cut down tree trunks from a nearby trail to build a hugelkultur from scratch, ie, dig down two feet into the ground in my back garden and fill it with semi decomposed logs, branches, fall leaves, kitchen organic scraps and topsoil. After the winter season, I added more topsoil with manure and it’s ready for planting.
LOVE this! I have enjoyed all of your videos since October 2021, when I discovered you as I bought a new house. I'm an artist, and one of my areas is the textured art that some people are DIYing now, (with a different artistic approach). It's cool that people have embraced it. I get inspired by your channel in many ways, and want to thank you for acknowledging that there are diy projects that can be classy! Please, PLEASE keep doing what you're doing.

I love the idea of adding doors to things such as bookcases, shoe racks, other compartment blocks to make what would have been just plain shelves or holes something beautiful that also hides what you want to hide and keeps those items clean at the same time. Buying plaster art is super expensive, which is why I love watching people DIY it. I'm going to take a crack at trying it myself because I just can't justify paying $400+ for plaster on a canvas.
ETA: we're doing a wood slat wall but I used 1x2s so there's no worrying about cutting a long perfectly straight line. We stained ours in special walnut for warmth, but you can stain or paint them. We're also doing two slat wall closets, like nothing behind the wood slats. Got the inspi when looking at Japandi ideas. It works perfectly for us since we were concerned about ventilation in the closests as we live right next to a body of water and in the Mid-Atlantic, so it can get very humid. Trying to eliminate things, especially linens, from getting sour/musty

Loved this video! I’m with you I’m not a DIYe. I saw a meme that said “why spend seven dollars to buy something when you can spend $93 at the craft store to make the same thing!” This is so true.
I actually love a lot of DIY's. I totally understand what you mean about there being a lot of situations where they don't make sense though. Besides your point about a lot of them not being sustainable, there's also the major pet peeve of mine where if it costs more to make the DIY than it would to purchase it from a professional or a company, it makes absolutely zero sense to me. HOWEVER in recent years there's seem to be a major increase in quality DIY's out there, a lot more power tools and less hot glue.
DIY Danie, in my opinion, does some of the most beautiful and impressive DIY's I've ever seen. She also does a whole series of "can I make it for cheaper?" videos where she recreates beautiful but very expensive pieces for a lot less, and honestly, so most of them turn out SO beautifully. I also think Lone Fox does some great Ikea upgrades specifically, he actually recently did a really beautiful Billy Bookcase makeover with the same basement column cover!
I absolutely HATE that plaster art. I'm a big colour person so I think that's a major issue about it for me. 90% of them are white on white... barf.

I love DIY's. I'm not much for the artwork type, and i cannot look at a piece of furniture and re-imagine it as something else, but i have furnished most of my home myself with custom built pieces i taught myself how to build over the years. I would never have been able to buy those pieces in a store as those designs do not exist anywhere. But it all started with basic and simple DIY's.

My husband painted a matte black wall in our master bathroom and then we replaced the old mirrors and towel holders with brushed gold finishes. Our Robe hooks, paper holder, and towel rings are Ollie Nickel. I was admittedly hesitant at first, but the room is large and gets a lot of great natural light, it was such a beautiful result.

Love these ones, Nick. I’m thinking instead of a wall of (more) beadboard in my 4’ wide hallway, I may use these shoe units with the slats and stain and shellac them in my warm wood color. It’s a great idea to cover my plaster walls which are already damaged from past wainscoting applications. Love it more because the hall is at my bedroom door and just off the living room where I have no entry and will be putting up a coat rack. Thanks for posting this.

Love browsing hardware stores for neat elements.
Pro-tip for the cabinet doors if you have cats or kids who might easily damage burlap, rattan, or caning... you can head to your local improvement store and get punched metal sheets fairly expensively that would serve the same purpose. You can spray paint them if you want a different color and the patterns available are immense. Everything from classic geometrics to more fanciful or whimsical. We've used these metal panels for several projects in my family because we have cats and cats like to scratch screening. You can also install them on your screened patio doors to prevent scratching as well. You just need tin snips to cut to fit and some sand paper to soften the edges if you don't want to hide them behind some sort of trim.

We used to have Column covers as part of a large fat TV unit, in the good old days.
Every evening we would close the two half’s of the cabinet over the front of of the screen, when the TV went off air about 12 midnight. And no, there was no remote control, it was probably also black and white. But it looked like a piece of furniture !!
Now I really am old. ! 🤣
I have installed sheetrock, painted, replaced old stairs, updated kitchens, bathrooms. The kind of thing needed when you buy old houses.

I love the terry cloth vases- could be tempted- they remind me of papier-mâché I did as a child. The burlap ikea project looked like a dust trap to me.
