    I really believe giving a lead guitarist space toward the end of a song to play a melodic lead above the other instruments is so dynamic.

    Playing in the key of C only using 1,4,5,6 chords. That's called an easy day.

    All of this! Communication is definitely the key thing. I'd also say communication with your FOH engineer about who is playing what for each song. Most engineers I've worked with like to know, some don't care but it's definitely helpful

    Paul Baloche mentioned complementing one another in a video course he put out about 15 years ago. He suggested if one guitar is playing in the lower register, (cowboy chords) then another instrument (guitar or piano) should be in another register. The point about the guitars not playing the same thing is really important, because they will compete. The frequencies of the notes will override one another if you're not exactly in tune. Also, it can lead to muddiness if one player is slightly off rhythm or is playing a different voicing in the same range (1st inversion of a chord in the same frequency range as someone playing the a power chord, etc). The human ear can only hear so much and then it stops listening. And our brains can only process so much and then they start shutting off. Which gives me MUCH respect for 70s rock groups like the Eagles, or Kansas, or Lynyrd Skynrd who had three (or more) guitarists on stage at the same time and still sounded GREAT.

      From what I was told, Doobie Brothers way of playing is this. Tom Johnston plays R & B style rhythm by strumming, Patrick Simmons plays rhythm by finger picking and John McFee plays lead. I've seen a few of their performances and observe that's how they do it.

    This is good, most videos out there is exactly what you said, one guitarist playing two ish parts. I think it’s much harder to have two guitars. 1. You have to communicate as you stated 2. You have to listen to each other 3. Some songs don’t have two parts so it might force us to be creative which is fun. 4. It allows us to humble ourselves and outdo each other with honor. I love that you share EG 1 and EG2 in the set, sharing and trust is key to have a good relationship between guitar players who, lets be honest, battle ego and pride every time we pick up the thing. Good topic

    So obviously the biggest priority in a two guitarist situation is to each play different parts/shapes/voicings, etc. What about guitar eq’ing? Is it beneficial for the more rhythmic guitarist to have a more scooped tone and the lead player to have a more middy tone?

    I find I have this question on keys as well. Only one key player: which part do I play and which to have in tracks? Especially on a synth-heavy song.

    • @joshpetermann
      @joshpetermann 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That partially depends on the capability of your keys rig:
      If you’re running a keyboard workstation (all sounds built into one piano/keyboard), you may be pretty limited in what parts you can cover.
      If you’re running a software setup (laptop + midi controller), you have much more flexibility and can cover more ground.
      In our context, I generally have my keys players cover the piano and pads parts on most songs. I let the tracks do the heavy lifting on big percussive synths and arpeggios.

    One question, do telecastors, strats, lespaul, etc. have different sounds due to their body shapes or do they differ more by the type of their pickups?
    Also, are there some kind of "rules" like tele or strat is more suitable for lead or rhythm guitar, viceversa, stuffs like that.

    • @taylorspecht2886
      @taylorspecht2886 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Kim it’s not so much the guitar shape, not that it doesn’t affect the tone, but it’s more that the different woods your guitar is made of bring out different frequency’s and affect the tone. Different pickups in your guitar also affect the tone. Just like different amps have different voices, different guitars and different pickups have different voices too. However as far as one being the best, that’s completely subjective. Just gotta have fun, be comfortable with the gear you’re playing with, and serve the song :)

      @malachiskelly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, you are saying that the Christian electric guitarist in the industry don't have skill because they have a lot of pedals on there board? I would say most of the people in the industry have a great talent given to them by God and the pedals can help them glorify him even more! The pedals aren't for covering up bad playing! Are you saying because you have less effects on your board that you are better then them? That doesn't make any sense. Like I said, most of them have been playing for years or even decades and have great skill. And most of them are probably better than you... Just saying... And plus, I would say it takes more skill to play with more pedals because then you have to know to use your effects correctly. Guys like Patrick Thompson(Rend Collective), Stu G(Delirious), Daniel Carson(Chris Tomlin), David Hislop(Bethel Music), and Lincoln Brewster among many many others are all talented players... Yet they all have one thing in common... Nice pedal boards with many effects. With which they glorify God and bring people to worship.
