  • An excellent, comprehensive demonstration of HOW to choose your pedals and develop your sound as an electric guitar player. For twenty years Ben Gowell, has played electric guitarist for Paul, Michael W. Smith, Sara Groves, and many others. Ben shows what pedals he uses on his pedal board and how to get different sounds that enhance a worship band sound. He discusses and demonstrates: Pedal boards, compressors, volume pedals, wawa pedals, overdrive pedals, EQ pedals, T-tone boost, tremolo pedals, delay pedals, tuner pedals, amps, and other essential gear. Finally, he demonstrates HOW to come up with unique guitar parts that enhance the song.

    Have ME-80. Many sounds and library. Translating your stuff and experimenting with tones without blowing the old folks away in our church. Researching all this and singing lead. It's tough but rewarding.

      Boss ME-80 ftw! Multi effects is the way to go if you’re singing, I think. Way too much work to river dance your way through an effects chain while also trying to sing and play the right parts

    This was very helpful. I've played acoustic guitar and drums and being asked to bring my electric and start doing these little nuance parts as well as sometimes strengthening the rhythm. This will help my comfort level as I don't want to be over the top or so sneaky quiet it's nothing. Musicians complementing the whole is where it's at. Thank you! Loved this!

    Great video! I think a lot of praise and worship guitarists feel pressure to have huge pedal boards with the latest and greatest effects in order to validate their ability to lead worship. This board is simple and effective with a great selection of pedals that aren’t too out of reach for most guitarists out there. Also, that Orange and Duesy combo is 🔥🔥🔥. Don’t see too many Orange amps out there these days but dang does that sound good!!!

    I'm a bit spoiled I guess. I have an Iso-cab in our rack room, with a Fender 60W SuperSonic set at 4. At home that would shake the windows but in the cab, you can't hear two feet away. Di under the stage out to my board and then to house, so pretty cool way to go.

    What do you think of the Spark and Spark Mini digital amps made by Positive Grid, which has the sounds online and you can program 4 of them at a time into your amp? Positive Grid also has a wireless foot 4 button pedal.

  • @mikegreenguitar
    @mikegreenguitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To get the sounds we use in contemporary worship, I use an old Line6 XT Pro, works great. Once you have your patches built and saved, it's a lot less work. and a lot less things to go wrong in a live setting. About $150 on Reverb. Line6 has newer, fancier stuff, but I don't think anyone in the congregation could tell the difference. For my recreational playing, I have a few T.C. Electronics pedals and some boutique-ish pedals that I love.

    I find it very interesting that he’s actually using an amp instead of going direct. Just about every church I’ve seen these days (in my experience) wants everyone go direct. I did this several years and I got extremely frustrated with my tone being awful coming out of the PA. At some point it dawned on me that a person who didn’t even play the instrument was dictating what gear I had to use and I just wasn’t willing to do that anymore. While I understand the “why” behind having no amps on stage I just got to the point where it simply didn’t make sense to me to do that. I’m not currently playing in a church mainly because I simply don’t want to deal with that whole scenario. Playing in church is the only situation I’ve ever encountered (I’ve been playing for many decades) where the tech team dictates the gear musicians have to use. I really enjoyed my time on worship teams since playing music (whether in or out of church) is deeply spiritual for me and I love sharing the joy of music with anyone who’s interested.

      So true brother.. you’ve just captured so eloquently my frustration with my church sound-PA police who dictates how to amplify the sound… many of these clowns have not picked up an instrument and played on stage nor appreciate true sound quality. They want the stage to look clean, but don’t care for the sound quality.

    • @williamchia6821
      @williamchia6821 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      2 things-
      1. This vid is 4 years old. Amp modeling has come light years in that time. Even modern professional bands go ampless because the tech is getting so good. (Search for “Bush rig rundown” for an example.)
      2. You need to check your heart. Are you there to perform to your own glory or to serve God’s people to His glory? Another piece of wisdom from Paul Baloche is that he says, “leading worship is like being a server at a restaurant, it’s not your turn to eat.” Being on stage at church is a time to sacrifice your own preferences to do what’s best for the community and for the team.

    Late to the comments. But the strangest thing happened to me recently. More like a testimony, that i want to fly with. I was having covid at the time. I was doing alot of praying at home and than when i was admitted to the hospital. But there were items i prayed for that i forgot. Anyways after i left the hospital ( praise and thanks to gods over loving heart and healing ) some new force was coursing through me. And i knew it and know it now. But i couldnt explain it. I knew it was a seed god planted. At first i just thought oh ok ty god for making me feel vibrant and alive after the hospital. Bht no. God had something in store for me a gift, a drive, a catalyst i would have never have thought. See ive always wanted to play guitar in the past before i became a christian. But it was for self entertainment. I tried it a few times and like anything else in my life i just hung it up. Well i have a old amp i bought brand new 11 years ago. I thought i needed it and its been collecting dust for 11 years. Well i went to the local guitar store cause for some reason i was compelled to wanting to play again. I didnt question it so i was looking at guitar cords ( i have a super cheap guitar. Itd not very nice. But its something ) so looking at pics, new strings. The saleman came up asked if i needed help i said oh im just wanting to get back into playing. Im not very good. I just have this overwhelming urge to play. He said u mentioned u already have an amp. I said yes. He said do u mind of i ask what kind. I said no not at all.

    • @moontraveler9754
      @moontraveler9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I told him i have a crate retrofex RFX30. Hes like really letcme google that. So he did. Hes like wow thats a nice amp. Is it in nice condition. I said well 11 years ago i bought it, used it a few times for fun. Than just stored it. So its basically in mint condition. I said to him ive always want to learn to play. But i cant read music. And i just stop playing and never pursued. He had a very calming nature and replied, oh its not as hard as you think. And even just learning basics like chords and breaking them down is fum and enjoyable itself. Some force pushed me right than and had me tell me would he like to play my amp. Because i would like to hear a professional use my amp and maybe show me how to properly use it. His eyes lit up and said really? Sure id be delighted. So i went home got my amp disinfected it. Cleaned it up. Went back to the store. Hes like oh my goodness it id perfect. He did say before he started u have a very nice amp here. Its not a practice amp its more of a gig amp. Im like ok ty i didnt know. It was on super sale brand new so i bought it knowing nothing about it.

    • @moontraveler9754
      @moontraveler9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He started playing and i felt like i was at a mini concert it was so fun. Plus my amp has a buult in auto tuner and a voice knob. He was having a ball. So afterwards. I felt inspired. Went home told the wife. Shes like oh cool. But heres where that seed starting blossoming like instantly. God knew something i wouldnt have a clue. See ive been dealing with 3 addictions in my life. And after praying super hard god has helped me release these chains. And i thank him so much. 1 was alcohol, the other chewing. And most resent video games. God was talking to me yesterday this is how recent this happened. God said i know u think your games are harmless but youve been wasting your time with them for 20 years. 20 years!!! Im like wow ive been lost all that time thinking it was harmless cause it wasnt drugs. But the lord was right i was getting nothing in returm from video games. Except for a escape from life. Than the lord flat out said i could never talk to you my son because your wall of games engulfed your life so much you wouldnt listen to me or even look my way

    • @moontraveler9754
      @moontraveler9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was like oh my goodness gods right. I just wasted my life with silly games that were super fun to play. But at what expense. I was having problems with my relationship with my kids, and my wife. And now i finally realize its the games. I went straight to prayer, apologized to the lord, and thanked him for releasing me from my persomal prison. I also told my wife and she practically started crying. But tears of rejoice. And here is where my new chapter/journey/spiritual adventure is about to start. And to be honest ive been awoken, i have a new internal fire and i can feel it. Im excited like ive never been for the hungry for the lord to feed me again. But he told me flat out told me. I have a mission that i think youre really going to enjoy. Remember when u want to play guitar a long time ago. But just hung it up. Well your new journey i give you. Is i want u to pursue guitar. And eventually through practice, hardwork, and enjoying your new gift. To take your new talent down the road once you have honed your craft and play to the masses that need it. All the while soothing your soul in the process as well

    • @moontraveler9754
      @moontraveler9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My jaw just dropped and im like wow my clouded video mind would have never have thought that. And that my christian brothers and sister is the awesome power of god. Im a roaring fire now and i cant wait to start my guitar venture. Because god will be with me and thats my inspiration to head full speed ahead. I am so excited!!

    • @moontraveler9754
      @moontraveler9754 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason why im telling thos page this. Is well im rejoicing. But i did a random search for playing guitar in a christian band. And this video popped up. After listening to the pedals and your personal talent i almost cried. I said wow. Its attainable. I know im not going to be a over night sensation. Its going to take prayer, dedication patience if i get frustrating. But to have god at the helm. All i gotta do is pray lord im having troubles. And since basically going to be a holy guitar warrior for gods kingdom. Ill never have to worry about faultering. Cause the awesome Lord Jesus Christ is in my ring. Im so excited and cant wait to stary my new chapter in life.
