Have been waiting for this one! Mr. Blakey is one of my musical heroes. Got to hang with him at a wedding party when I was a kid and learned all about Art the human being. A beautiful cat.
Man, For some reason I wasn’t getting phrase 2…I watched and watched and finally figured it out. I love it , I was getting that snap and I felt like a drummer, check that, I felt like Quincy Jones! Da Bulls!
Thanks a ton for this! Blakey and Elvin are my favorite drummers from that whole bebop and post-bebop era. I'm working on the Mozambique groove...working on "Night in Tunisia," so I'm in a bit of a Blakey mood right now. Love how you pointed out that Blakey had both power and finesse. I was hit with that when I was working on the "Moanin'" groove. That jazz shuffle is so beautiful and graceful...but so easy to slip out of when ya haven't played it in a while.
Amazing lesson! That 4 stroke ruff and the one that uses Bill Stewart share a lot! Man, I just love the way you never stop grooving, even when your hands don't do what you want. You are an amazing drummer and teacher! BTW: I would INSTA-BUY a PDF with all your "4 Essential Phrases" series! Thanks as always!
#4 is a great alternative to just playing a standard mambo. I remember he uses that groove during the intro to "Minority." I'll definitely shed that one a bit.
I was watching with close captions and it is fascinating that the language recognition/sound discernment system identified "fast jazz drumming" as in (fast jazz drumming continues)
This feels like some more in depth Blakey! Really great lesson. I love that you didn’t touch on his 2 signature moves; his buzz roll, and his shuffle. This feels more in depth and I really love these phrases. Thanks Q!
Check out Dr. Q's earlier Blakey video where he does the Blakey Buzz Roll and the Blakey shuffle. BTW I like your profile pic- I spend a lot of time in Egypt.
My favorite Blakey album is the one with Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Doug Watkins, and Donald Byrd. A great album recorded in the 50s . Thanks for the Blakey lesson, he was a driving force and one of the greatest drummers ever.
It is a great luck for me to be able to receive these lessons...Today in particular, from the hand of a teacher, to learn some of the phrases of the great Art Blakey. Something characteristic of him for me is a mixture of atavistic rhythms and sophistication in perfect combination. It's hypnotic... An honor to belong to this group of music-loving followers... I'm ready!, ...double honor mine for being named here. A cordial greeting to all. Thank you for such good videos, congratulations for the channel. A sincere hug, Mr. Davis. Great ...
Art Taylor plays something very similar to the first part of phrase #1 in his intro to Countdown off Giant Steps. I know he used to get all kinds of tips from Philly Joe and Kenny Clarke.. I bet he dug Blakey too. Thanks very much for this Q! Cheers from Canada.
@@drumqtips yes, I have watched that one and it’s a great video on press rolls. Towards the end of that one you talk about changing the rate of your hands or decreasing the rate. Blakey was the master of that, while he kept that ironclad inner time, and/or against his feet in time. This idea destroys my students and took me a long time to understand. The way Blakey would intensify his roll by moving his hands at a completely different rate than the eighths, triplets or sixteenths that might work at that tempo. (Sorry about the long, winded reply!!)
I loved this lesson! Art Blakey was so good. Another great groove of his is Caravan. Would you include that one in your next Art Blakey lesson? Also, I would love for you to do Lenny White and Harvey Mason, Pleez!
This totally rocks Art Blakey is timeless always great!
Right on Alan!
Man you need to make a sample pack for us producers ASSSAAAAPPPP. Swear I would pay money for that. Fills, one shots, top lines, etc
I’ll keep that in mind, my man.
