That's smokin', thanks for sharing. I met Max in Toronto in the late '80s when I was a teenager. Had a nice long conversation with him. You've motivated me to practice hard-and smart!
Q!!! In my humble opinion, you have created what I think is HANDS DOWN the most useful TH-cam channel ever for drummers who love bop! Great stuff, sir!
Wow! That is so nice of you. I'm just happy so many drummers like yourself who trying to improve and understand this great art form better find my lessons helpful. Cheers to you!
Quincy, no drum teacher makes me want to drop what I'm doing and run down to my drum set the way you do. Thank you for the inspiration! Slightly related story: I took a Jazz History course once (after I had given up on being a music major), and in a mid-term paper I transcribed Max's neat 4-bar fill from "Move" as an example of "theme and variation" on the drums. The professor loved it and I ended up helping him with a bit of research for a paper he was doing on Baby Dodds!
@I have some great teachers in the past but you definitely make sense of bop for all drummer. Houghton , Dawson , garibaldi , Peterson Gullotti and Chaffee are some of my past teachers but that was long ago so you have reminded me to say at jazz. Peace quincy
Hey Supa Q from Ned in Spain Again. Wowee ! These are some classic Max moves and sounds, so well laid out and played by you. You make these and the Philly Joe riffs swing so sweetly and demonstrate how they transform depending on your speed and placement. I agree too that getting a handle on the 6 stroke roll is essential . Thanks again again and again. Keep cool and stay well.
Always good to hear from you Nutty! Those cats were genius and were just scratching the surface but at least a little Max and Philly Joe can go a long ways! Btw staying cool in Texas at this time the year ain’t easy but I’ll do my best:)
Thank you so much for giving these phrases out! If you don’t know, I have to play in the style of Max Roach for my TMEA All-State Jazz Audition! That’s because we have to play Stockton Helbing’s “The Etude Also Waltzes”, maybe you can get him up on a video again :) lol!
Hello Quincy! Just catching up! Amazing video, you left me with a big smile from the start to the end! Your playing is truly inspiring! Thanks for all this amazing vocabulary and thanks to Max Roach too! Have a great week!
Hi Quincy, I have just finished a transcription of a Bill Stuart solo from the Modern Drummer Festival 2008. Would you mind taking a look at it, since some of that stuff is hard to notate and I‘d like to get some feedback on that. Best, Christian from Germany
Hi Christian. Congrats on finishing the transcription! I'd be happy to have a look at it during a Zoom lesson. There's a link to sign up for one in the description box just below the video. Cheers!

I’ve been wanting to get a pair of your signatures and haven’t been able to find any. Are they still being produced? need some!
They should be coming in in the next couple of weeks, so keep an eye out on my website for them.
Quincy who are some of your favorite drum creators on youtube? I really enjoy your content and ZachGrooves
Thank you. I like Austin Burcham and Zach Grooves.
Quincy - great! Love these. Also love your bd sound. Question - do you use a wood beater? Or hard felt? Or ?
Glad you enjoyed it and like my bass drum sound! I use a normal felt bd beater.

What’s ur snare drum in this vid????
A Copper 6.5"X14" Tama snare. I don't think they make it anymore unfortuantely.
"thank you so much for tuning in" ha
No pun intended🤣
Verbatimly is your big word for today.
Apparently🤣
❤
I might need a little bit more than a TH-cam video to know these phrases 😂
Well...somehow that doesn't surprise me Rachel:)
❤
