My first drum teacher taught me the rudiments. At a certain point he gave me to another teacher who showed he how to do rudiment on the kit just like you are talking about. Improvisation. But that was *checks watch* 40 years ago LOL Drummers like Bonzo were hardcore using rudiments because he was copping Buddy Rich Gene Krupa Louie Bellson licks. Good lesson.

Excellent Lesson I do have my students their rudiments on the Drumset. I also have them breakup their rudiments between their hands and feet. Always makes the lesson interesting and tuff. I also have them play their TXUIL snare solos on the Drumset. Letting them uses any part of the kit in their solo while keeping the music on the sheet constant. This is performed in front of the class for a grade. KEEP THEM GUESSING!!!

Thanks Quincy... this lesson is so very important. I have my drum students play snare solos from books like Wilcoxon's Swing Solos or The All-American Drummer (150 Rudimental Solos) and apply them in the same way using various foot patterns. We also go further and orchestrate the accents (Left and right handed) on the cymbals and add the bass drum. The same goes for flams, only the principal note of the flams is played on Cymbals and the grace note on the snare...while adding the bass drum. Thanks for your video Quincy.
Ditto here. And not only Wilcoxon's Swing solos, but also taking a bar or two from any etude (eg M. Peters Intermediate Snare) and doing the same - creating and inventing. Good stuff.
What a great lesson Quincy! It really got me excited to start woodshedding these rudimental patterns. And as a footnote, your drum sets tone is just outstanding.
Great lesson! I started playing in the 60s and back then every kid learned rudiments and worked through the 1st 2 Harr books. Kinda dated and slightly corny material BUT most had a strong sense of time and pretty good chops. Fast forward to today and 34 years of teaching band and private lessons. Most kids are not working rudiments and can't even play a march properly with their school band. A lot of rudimental teaching fell by the wayside as a side effect of an emphasis that started in the early 80s (here) on the total percussionist... which is fine and a great concept but a student and teacher cannot ignore rudiments. I still teach them and apply them to the set.... but when a kid comes in and has to prepare timpani, keyboard and snare it is easy to neglect rudiments. Don't know what the answer is but the BDs need to emphasize the importance of rudiments. Every day. And be sure their kids know rudiments and how to play a march in the correct style. It will greatly improve their sense of time and chops. Rant over. Keep up the great work! (ps love the 5 step method and will use it with my students and myself ...thanks!)
Thank you Quincy for this! you see that yur rudiments to improvise come from yur feelings and the minds of yur hands....(.ok so what if its technical muscle memory....) yur vocalisations are needed to coax the spirit out of the drums....yur the channeller the jazz yogi on the stool the drums are the amplifiers of yur spirit......basically yur singing with yur hands ... thats the true jazz master....at some point the whole ensemble bass drum snare ride and hihat come togather in a swirl of beautiful sound a wall of symphony for quartet play on.....brilliant lesson. Also having a jazz open ear will allow yu to truly make new jazz sounds... like john coltraine and albert ayler did.

Love the idea of playing bass drum on accents, one thing I used to do was play various time division phrases single stroke random patterns with hi-hat keeping pulse and play bass drum on top of those stokes then streach time with phrase while keeping hi-hat pulse steady. i really helps with time division understanding.

Next, have a quick listen to Deep Purple’s , “Burn” and you’ll realise that swing & rudiments can be universally applied; clearly Ian Paice loves to blast those syncopated big beats.
Excellent approach. I play the piano, so I always sing the songs and follow the harmony, which is what I'm most passionate about. But when I saw your video, I came up with an idea: Why not play the last solos of one page of Wilcoxon's "The All American Drummer" over a jazz standard like "How High The Moon" (form: ABAC, with fits perfectly with the solos) with iReal Pro while singing the melody of the song? I tried it today, and a whole new world opened up for me. Suddenly, all the phrases and motifs made musical sense. I'm impressed and excited, and now I know which direction to work in to make practical use of all this snare drum solo material in the context of jazz.
heres a lesson for you turn it all around including high hat play it on 1 and three and turn your sticking all on left hand and practice alternating sticking and when you can play it all this way left handed then start practicing your Afro Cuban Latin and clave tumboa even so this is a nice lesson

I’m 75. I played in high school band, marching and concert. Never made a transition to kit drumming. I had a crude kit but attempts at following rock and roll songs of the day were abysmal failures. How about how the process of kit drumming learning starts especially for those of us that reasonably accomplished on snare and bass by themselves.

I was working on Syncopation before that with the jazz ride and hi-hat on 2 & 4 with the left hand playing the line. My question is as I am going through Dawson's book and I wondered if there is a proper way to go through it? Do you happen to have a video on approaching this book? I've heard from several drummers that this book is life-changing once you mastered it; I am not sure if I am approaching it correctly because results are very slow but then again I only play around five hours a week at best. Anyways, any feedback would be appreciated.

I had to cancel drum lessons with a teacher because he didn’t teach me rudiments. I asked beforehand if he could and then he said he would around the 2nd lesson saying he will teach only the important ones…by the third lesson he said he will not be teaching them after he said he would. This ordeal prompted me to get books on the subject and view vids like this….he kept telling me in the lesson to create a solo…I kept telling him I need to know the drummer language before creating a solo…which are rudiments. I kept saying that, but he didn’t listen.
Prolly not, but I make a lot of videos and the lesson can all seem the same to me if I’m not careful. So sometimes I do things just to change it up to make sure I’m having fun. Also some viewers who watch all my videos appreciate the change up.
I think so..as Bernard stressed tuning well…..when I saw him at the very first Zildjian Day..in Chicago..around 1982….He said..start with the BD….THEN…..ft..then..mounted..lastly….snare….Your drums sound Amazing..Q…..I first saw you play..when you were around 16….outside….downtown here….I thought……I wouldn’t go up and play after him!..ha ha ha

I think so..as Bernard stressed tuning well…..when I saw him at the very first Zildjian Day..in Chicago..around 1982….He said..start with the BD….THEN…..ft..then..mounted..lastly….snare….Your drums sound Amazing..Q…..I first saw you play..when you were around 16….outside….downtown here….I thought……I wouldn’t go up and play after him!..ha ha ha

Using the kick to fill in like another drum is exactly how Ginger Baker played in the original Cream recordings. Some of those tracks never even work when anyone else I've ever heard has played them because they try to use a conventional kick-snare beat. th-cam.com/video/TNbYOfE2iTg/w-d-xo.html

It can be frustrating. But you are clearly a very good drummer, and the main point of the video is clearly a very good one. I'm sorry to have been rude.
