@@fortunatecookie very sadly true...not just rural areas too :( we live just outside of Nashville and our public schools are underfunded, and it takes the surrounding community to step up and help as much as possible. Or staff members write grants or apply for grants, etc. And how does that make sense with how much $$$ is flowing all around? Ridiculous!

The US is actually fucking terrible when it comes to international cooperation aimed at making things better for people. The list of treaties and conventions the US is either not party to, hasn’t signed, or hasn’t ratified is hilariously shameful.

what's worse is that schools aren't even doing bake sales anymore in conservative states, they straight up make children work at fast food joints like Mc Donald's for a day, and somehow this doesn't ring any alarm bells for child endangerment.

Right now, this life we are in is exhausting. It's similar to being married to a raging drunk who bellows his anger for hours and hours when sober, only to be violent when drunk on a continuous basis. But you can't get out of the marriage for some reason because the community eliminated social services and other organizations except for the police who does not "serve and protect." You can't blame Fake News for all this bad stuff because it's real. You can't blame Trump alone because his supporters are all-in on the bad stuff like blood-thirsty sharks. Right now, it seems like evil is winning. It takes a special amount of strength to defeat this tidal wave of evil, and many of us are spent.

When indigenous people in the Arctic died of smallpox their bodies immediately froze rather than begin decomposing. As the permafrost thaws and heaves, the bodies in the old graves also thaw. Those with smallpox (Variola major) may still contain live bacteria that is will be released into the environment.

While it's true that withdrawing from the WHO is a bad move, It's also true that the WHO is China's lapdog. They have been for years. The top dog of the WHO, the Director-General, was Margaret Chan, who was also the Chinese delegate from 2006 - 2017. During this period, the WHO became increasingly vocal in their endorsements of traditional chinese medicines. That's right, the traditional chinese medicines that are driving illegal wildlife trade and putting so many species in danger. The TCM that is rooted in superstition, and not scientific observation. The TCM that has repeated shown to be no more effective then placebo. Curiously, the WHO doesn't support other forms of alternative medicine, like homeotheraphy. Only TCM gets a free pass. Because China.
Someone needs to wrest control of the WHO from China. Preferably someone other than the US.

There are actually questions about polio and paralysis. The major issue is there is no historical record of childhood paralysis prior to the mid 19th century, and its emergence paralleled vast innovations in the use of insecticides such as paris green or lead arsenate. Roosevelt's paralysis when he was visiting New Brunswick, and just a few months before, calcium arsenate had been introduced into the province. It's not hard to extrapolate that there was a huge pesticide bonanza during the second world war (witness DDT - only one of many new wartime chemicals) and that coincided with the "outbreak" of child paralysis. The 1911 experiment by Flexner supposedly proving a polio virus caused paralysis is seriously lacking - and it's impossible to tell whether he was working with what was later identified as the polio virus because the electron microscope hadn't been invented (nor was it invented at the time Roosevelt came down with Polio). Let's put it this way: very powerful chemical companies and agribusiness interests with ties to the military want to use industrial products they know can but rarely causes paralysis. Suddenly everyone believes "it's a virus." Either that, or a poisoning-paralysis case is routinely and frequently misdiagnosed as being caused by a very rare virus that just happens to be in the news because there's a "March of Dimes" P/R campaign so it's the first thing on most doctor's minds. Well, now you don't have to worry about the goverment banning your product...sounds farfetched, but in 1952, one of Jonas Salk's researchers Irwin Ekswith succeeded in reversing a case of childhood "polio" paralysis with dimercaprol - a detox substance. All the work was buried by the Public Health Service ...

Apparently his ancestor came to the US, and when asked about his name, the US official couldn’t understand it and just asked him where he was from. He responded with “I’m from Alsace” (a region at the Franco-German border which changed hands many times, written “Elsass” in German), to which the official told him that his name would be Elsaess from now on.
Oh, and of course there’s a certain family, not sure if you’ve heard of them, who came to the US around the beginning of the 20th century and changed their original family name of “Drumpf” to smg else...

It's incredible how the reputation of the US has gone down the drain over the decades.
I still remember the stories from my dad and how the US soldiers brought chocolate after WW2 (I'm from Germany). So even though they just fought a friggin' war against us (where they ultimately saved us from a crazy dictator) they still brought some chocolate afterwards! I mean, sure - the US did a lot wrong over the years - but at some point in time they at least were considered the good guys. And now everyone is just laughing, cringing or flinching when they hear about the US (at least for all the non-US people I know from around the world) - in the worst case scenario they are even very afraid. So Trump is by no means responsible for all or even most of this ... but he made sure that the already bad image of the US is now set in stone and tainted for decades to come. He is the pinnacle of the development the US has gone through over the years. And he made sure that the US will probably go down in the history books as the most stupid nation. And all of this is so sad. Despite all my prejudices I meet so many nice people from there. But aside from that - politically I'd argue that the US is pretty much dead to the world from this point forward. No leadership, no help and especially no trust anymore. And all of this is made visible by stupid decisions like this: Basically defunding the WHO for some imaginary political gain, losing the last bits of credibility the US had left in the world. This will go down in the history books for sure. But I'd rather not and instead get the trust for the US back up. But quite frankly I don't see how this could happen. This is a bleak future and I feel very depressed.
Thanks John for making this episode!

Why take the fire engines away in the middle of fighting the fire? Because the fire chief has an ego as fragile as an egg and one of the houses burning belongs to a neighbor he suspects borrowed his weed whacker and never actually returned it. That's pretty much it and it's depressing that the rest of the world sees half the country cheering that man on.

While I agree with most of what was said about how to handle WHO's apparent biases towards China, there's two very important, and very big things Oliver did not mention that I feel need mentioned:
    1. WHO did know the extent of the virus much earlier than they when they started providing recommendations. It's not a coincidence that they knew weeks before Chinese New Year, where literally hundreds of millions of people travel in China, and waited until AFTER Chinese New Year to raise the alert.
    2. WHO's lack of willingness to acknowledge Taiwan has gone so far as when asked about whether or not they would recommend using the measurers in Taiwan (which has had 0 local cases for months now), the representative stated that he "already discussed China". When corrected that they were asking about Taiwan, hung up the call, then called back, then pretended to not hear it, then ended the call again. This is WHO acting like a child, because instead of creating recommendations that are proven to work, they would rather protect China's feelings (who as Oliver has shown CAN'T EVEN LEAVE WHO),

@darknightoftroy dark, nobody here has mentioned the citizenry in particular, foreigners mentioning the united states usually refer to the government or military. That said, you may choose to distance yourself from the concept of the USA as a broad term (nobody can blame you for being born anywhere) but you can't chose to distance yourself from the ugly and still keep being a "proud american". People who are "proud americans" but chose to turn a blind eye to all the atrocities are just hypocrites.
