    A President that answers to no one is called a dictator.

    • @SerenityM54L2SAM5L5N1
      @SerenityM54L2SAM5L5N1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Dictators aren't elected by its people. Dictators can't be withdrawn by the Senate. Dictators wouldn't be limited by several different institutions, checks and balances and the constitution. Pro-dictatorship pundits and any independent watchdogs are fully aware that the US is a form of a representative democracy where citizens decides the outcome of who becomes the president, which senators/representatives should represent each state/city in the House/Senate and which governors should rule a decentralized state/city in the United States.
      If Trump was an actual dictator, I'm sure you'd notice. Because you'd probably be stuck behind a jail cell for questioning the system. A lot of issues would've been solved without having to pander to the people or Congress. BLM would've been crushed in three minutes. The police officers handling the long-term convict back in May would've been given a medal for protecting their nation from decadence (and maybe criticized for not tackling and handling the convict hard enough).

      real anarchy would probably involve poor people being shot. as well as rich people black people blonde people and more generally peoplepeople doing bad thing to other people... for a while. things would settle down quickly to a sort of social equilibrium, peolple don't naturally want to just destroy others. the problem is what balance would arrise, it could be almost the same lifestyle as today with bakers continuing to bake their bread and exange it for stuff or money or a despotic asshole taking power by force...
      i think its something we should study more and think about, the concept is interesting in an abstrac social/philosophical way sure but more importantly that's where at least some if not most countries are going... at the end of the 21rst century the world will be much more harsh and inhabitable and nobody is planning anything

      Technically, most tap water is a chemical. Fresh-squeezed juice is a chemical. Tea and coffee are chemicals. Table salt is a chemical. As such, obviously, pepper extract is a chemical. And of those, not one is not an irritant in certain situations, though if you only look at the eyes, nose, skin, and throat, water (usually) is not.
      There's a reason many countries have outlawed it, with several banning it - along with other things - under various forms of "chemical weapons" bans.

      @@pills- I think (being charitable to John Oliver here) what you've missed is the difference between 'unrest' (when the status quo is disturbed) and 'real anarchy' (complete disorder, hierarchical breakdown, no government, no status quo), because Oliver was talking about the latter. The point being made imo is that without the institutions of the state (police, laws, military etc.) to protect them the rich/elite would be the first targets. Sure, the massed poor, having removed their former oppressors would then likely turn on themselves (as famously happened in Revolutionary France). But the point wasn't that 'in real anarchy the poor won't get shot', merely that they won't be shot 'first'. Of course there's more nuance in reality than can be conveyed in either a one liner on a comedy show, or a short paragraph in the comments section but I hope this made at least some sense.

      Politics in the US since Reagan has been broken beyond repair. The hope was getting Trump in that office would be a disaster big enough that society collectively would get scared enough to "wake up".
      Instead, all that's happenned is everything's gotten even more polarized, and the DNC did everything in their power, and actually succeded, in just trying to get back to the earlier years, where everything is fucked up beyond belief all the same, just not with a complete moron at the helm.
      Al in all, the US is fucked to a point that's even hard to believe, something that will just keep going when the democrats are back, and meanwhile people are focusing on the last stupidity that comes out of Trumps mouths, as if what he's been doing is that much worse than the last 40 years.

And we will never convince someone who needs to be right that they’re wrong (a very emotionally charged word at best) by telling them they are wrong. We have to show respect to teach respect. He then takes over the Department of Magical Law Enforcement himself, and pulls the strings of their new puppet for Minister, Pius Thicknesse. He's also the character that authorizes the Snatchers to catch Muggle-borns and dissidents (perhaps a parallel for the federal agents picking up protesters in unmarked vans).
      Umbridge will always be Betsy Devos. The sickly sweet demeanor, the tailored skirt suits, the oppressive control over teachers, and her universal loathing by students. Also her willingness to jump into positions of authority under an autocratic regime that's supplanting government stalwarts with Trumpian (Death Eater) appointees.
      And the GOP wonders why the younger generation is so cynical towards them and openly mock them for their views. You have an entire generation that reads books like the Harry Potter series, the Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, and His Dark Materials; they were raised during an era of film franchises like the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe that tout the virtues of honesty, selflessness, and sacrifice for the survival of mankind; and the GOP can't seem to understand why their isolationist, anti-immigrant, every-man-out-for-himself plans are being derided for the poison they are to the general population. Those books were not meant to be a reflection on society as it is, they were supposed to be a dystopian nightmare that should be avoided, and the Republican Party was seen steering right into it.

    I am sad to see this whole aspect of Barr was not mentioned at all;
    "How does religion promote the moral discipline and virtue needed to support free government?
    First, it gives us the right rules to live by ... Judeo-Christian moral standards are the ultimate utilitarian rules for human conduct."
    Source: www.justice.gov/opa/speech/attorney-general-william-p-barr-delivers-remarks-law-school-and-de-nicola-center-ethics
    This, for me personally, is terrifying. He is proposing that all morality be sourced from the church and to me that sounds like Christian fascism.

    • @zJoriz

      Interesting read!
      "First is the force, fervor, and comprehensiveness of the assault on religion we are experiencing today. This is not decay; it is organized destruction. Secularists, and their allies among the “progressives,” have marshaled all the force of mass communications, popular culture, the entertainment industry, and academia in an unremitting assault on religion and traditional values."
      I'm not saying religion is inherently bad - personally I believe we all have to believe *something*, because it's what our brain is programmed to do, and at least many strings and varieties of religion have some useful reminders for living that, indeed, help the society at large - but whenever he mentions "traditional values" I can't help wondering, "You mean the past times when a pastor could have his way with the kids under his care because his power was absolute? The good ol' times when the concept of marital rape hadn't been invented yet? That one economy - among many at the time - that was built on the backs of slaves?"
      All that aside, it reads like a good speech. Makes a clear point with many emotionally heavy statements, a lot of moral high ground and righteousness, a declaration of The Threat, The Enemy and a strongly worded declaration of Resistance against this enemy. Probably sounded like music to his listeners' ears.

    • @DevinParker
      @DevinParker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Barr's assertion completely ignores the apostle Paul's statement that if his religious beliefs in Jesus and the afterlife were false, the religious strictures he and other Christians followed were folly - "If only in this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men." (1 Corinthians 15:19). Jesus' ministry and sacrifice were about the fact that no one could achieve sufficient righteousness on their own; one could strive to follow all of the Commandments but still end up unredeemed. For Barr to tack even further in the opposite direction and claim that Christian moral standards are *perfectly utilitarian* is questionable under a charitable reading of his statement. Utilitarianism is not a compatible philosophy with Christianity, but an ethical framework that empowers the strong and wealthy to oppress the poor and weak. As much as Barr likes to weasel out of things by playing at semantics, I think his use of the term "utilitarian" here is indicative of his true feelings and motives, which are not for the benefit of the public.

      @@skyskynomnom4674 America, like every nation on the planet, has periods of history where we made the wrong decision that negatively affects millions of our people.
      The strange case with the US is that we tend to deal with these past wrongs with a "sweeping under the rug" sort of denial; an embarrassed sensitivity to discuss openly *why* leaders and the sentiments of the common people were aligned in a way that ignored the civil liberties of one group in exchange for a sense of security for the nation and a sense of proactivity on the part of the govt.
      When a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural nation is under attack from outside forces, the members of that nation belonging to the aggressors' ethnic background are unfairly highlighted as potential agents of the enemy. It happened to (and is still happening in many cases) to Middle Eastern and Muslim Americans during and after 9/11, but also to Japanese Americans in WWII, and to communist party members in the McCarthy era. This knee jerk reaction to safeguard, punish, or cleanse the country of our "liabilities" is short-sighted, narrow-minded, and self destructive. Caused by fear, ignorance, and panic these decisions to persecute, segragate, hunt down, or marginalize a segment of our own population makes us a weaker, not a stronger, safer nation. Maybe that's why policies like segregation, Jim Crow, Japanese internment camps, communist witch-hunts, Muslim bans, and now anti Chinese or anti Trump sentiment scar us to the point that when the conflict is resolved, we like to pretend it never happened and never really discuss or heal as a nation.
      I believe we will be doomed to repeat this same mistake until our history text books make an honest, factual recount of those mistakes highlighting the causes, and reconciling with those marginalized groups.

    1:50- "What is particularly striking about Barr's behavior over the last year and half is that, when Trump first nominated him, the news was basically greeted as relief."
    That's because Americans either have goldfish memories or we simply do not pay attention as a society. I'm very disappointed that you didn't go into more details of the Iran-Contra cover-up because that's really the main issue at hand with him.
    For those who don't know, The Iran-Contra scandal was an incident that occurred under the Reagan presidency where the Executive branch sold weapons to the Khomeini government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who were attempting to overthrow the Persian monarchy and establish an Islamic state, which eventually did occur in 1979 thanks almost entirely to our help because the country was under an arms embargo at the time. While this was happening, senior officials in the White House attempted to divert funds to the Contras, a far-right paramilitary group located in Nicaragua that opposed the democratically-elected socialist government of that country. To do this legally would require an act of Congress, since the legislative branch controls the money of government. Congress had actually passed two resolutions forbidding the sale of arms to the Contras. But Reagan's cabinet did it anyway.
    The most prominent American players in the scandal were National Security Council official Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North, Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger, Assistant Secretary of State Elliot Abrams, Robert McFarlane the National Security Advisor to the president, Deputy National Security Advisor John Poindexter, and George H.W. Bush, the Vice President.
    Several Congressional investigations were launched, and eventually a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate the matter, a man by the name of Lawrence Walsh. Walsh's investigation would eventually result in fourteen total indictments and eleven convictions, several of which were vacated on appeal. In June of 1992, Walsh announced that he was indicting Weinberger for his involvement in the scandal. He stated that he had come into possession of detailed notes kept by Weinberger that implicated George Bush, who was currently the sitting president and up for re-election, which would later reveal that the entire operation had been run out of his office when he was VP under Reagan, despite his very public denial of any knowledge of the scandal in 1988.
    On December 24th, 1992, after he lost his re-election bid to Bill Clinton, Bush announced a pardon for Weinberger on all charges related to his role in Iran-Contra. He then pardoned five other officials who had already been found guilty; Elliot Abrams, Duane Clarridge, Alan Fiers, Clair George, and Robert McFarlane. Bush's attorney general, Bill Barr, was consulted extensively on these pardons, and especially advocated for the pardon of Weinberger.
    In response to these pardons, Walsh stated publicly, quote, "the Iran-Contra cover-up, which has continued for more than six years, has now been completed." He further noted that in issuing the pardons Bush was preempting his implication in the crimes by the evidence that was to come to light during the Weinberger trial.
    So for everyone wondering about the implications of Trump attempting to self-pardon his way out of crimes... we've been here before. It's already happened. So... yeah...
    And fun fact: Elliot Abrams currently serves in the Trump administration as the US Special Representative for Iran.

      Here's another fun fact regarding accountability:
      Anne Irene McGill was Ronald Reagan's EPA chief, and the first woman to be the head of that agency.
      In 1982, Congress charged her with misappropriating a $1.6 billion superfund that was meant for cleaning up toxic waste by withholding disbursements in order to affect the outcome of a local California election. She was cited for contempt of Congress and the White House refused to turn over requested documents, citing executive privilege. Eventually it was revealed by deputy White House counsel that several other White House officials had overheard her say at a luncheon that she was in fact doing the thing she was accused of. The White House abandoned it's claim of privilege and she resigned in 1983, citing pressures caused by the media related to the scandal.
