    Hey guys! Anyone with difficulty wrestling out the side stop tabs, I figured out on mine you can push against the back side (from inside the glovebox) so the entire back portion will bow outward enough for both the stop pins to come out. Give it a try!! And thank you for this video Dennis!

    I just replaced it after 10 years, thanks to your excellent video. The challenge was to squeeze the glove compartment hard enough to bring it down. It was like boxing inside the glove compartment with a Samurai warrior. I hope the Toyota engineers heed my words and make it simpler.

    Your instructions are spot on.
    There are three variations: 1. Some filters have up arrows, 2. Some have air flow arrows & 3. Some have arrows but don't mention air flow or up. The good rule to follow is that all air filter arrows indicate air flow direction UNLESS it says "UP" next to the arrows.

    Just did this "operation" and the steps were simple, but it took me a while. The glove box pins are really hard to get out, same with the video, once I had one out and tried the other one, the first one would go back in. I had to try really hard to "break" it out. Then when re-installing it, the "hinge" at the bottom of the glove box neeeds to be inlined in order for it to work properly. I could see why some dealers would charge quite a bit of money for this, but thank god for this tutorial, otherwise, it would've been an even more stressful installment for me.

    Dealer charged me $60 to do this, but only once. The "book" talks about taking the whole glove box out/frame out of there to do the job, which might explain the dealer's "flat rate" big charge. The first time I changed the filter myself, I noticed all the screwdriver pry/scratch marks on the glovebox/frame where the Toyota tech just pried the box out of there....Next year, the dealer asked me if I wanted the filter changed, I told them for $60 I can pry the damn glove box out of there myself! As for the stinky smells, I did notice them last year while using the AC in the summer. Toyota talks about spraying some sort of cleaner into the heater/AC box through the drain tube under the car, they also want this spray down through where the cabin air filter is, so I guess I will do that this spring when I change the filter again....

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow...yea $60 and a scratched up dash....that's ridiculous. I think the smells come from condensation gathering in the bottom of the plenum box and then mildew sets in. I've not had to spray mine out, but sounds like a good idea for the next filter change. Thanks!!

      @dwcoffey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! You could try grabbing the release tab on the right side with a pair of needle nose pliers and pulling. Be careful, as the cover and tab are plastic and could break, but maybe that will give you enough pull to get it to release.

  • @garygantz664

    You said the new filter should be inserted with the arrow pointing down. It appeared that the old filter you took out had the arrow pointing up. The 2007 Toyota Camry owner's manual states "when inserting the filter in the filter outlet, keep the arrow pointing up."

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching, Gary! Some filters will show the air flow direction (the new filter) and some will just have an arrow on the that says "up." The filter I removed. I have found that most replacement filters show the air flow direction....since the air flows from the top fresh air intake to the blower below, that arrow should point down. Hope that helps!

    • @njsongwriter
      @njsongwriter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Gary
      There is a difference between an up arrow and an air flow arrow. What on earth reason do you have for thinking the air flows up?
      Here's another video which should convince you.
      th-cam.com/video/utz0qI6_i9M/w-d-xo.html
      And remember, those instructions in the owner's manual are for installing an OEM Toyota filter, not an after market filter. Toyota filters say up on them. That is simply telling you which side goes up. It has nothing to do with air flow.

      @dwcoffey  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching, Renate! I would remove the cover and the filter and check inside the air box behind the filter for any debris or accumulated water, etc. There may be something in the airbox that is making it smell bad. I advise wearing gloves when you do this.

    Thanks. I can't wait to take it out, because I think it's really blocking my air flow. I will not be putting a new one in. We lived all these years without one, so I am returning to a simpler time. I'm freeing my car from wearing a facemask (filter ) during these Covid times.

      Thank you for watching, Dee! LOL! The only problem with not using a filter is that debris will get into your fan blower and then get blown in the cabin when ever using vents, AC or heat. So.....if you go through a dusty area, or a lot of bugs, etc.....the dust and/or bugs for example, will end up blowing into the cabin thru the AC or heat vents.

    My damper keeps coming off from the inside. I can never get both sides of the damper hooked at the same time after replacing the filter. It's off to the mechanic again. Is there another pin on the inside that I'm missing? Thanks

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching, Dan. Make sure your filter is completely seated into the back of the filter cavity. It might be sticking out just a touch too far and preventing the cover from latching on both sides.

      Sounds like somebody removed it and didn't replace it. Google 'Camry cabin filter cover' and you'll find them available for $8-$15. You should be able to slide a filter in, pop in the cover and be good to go. Thanks for watching, Lily!

      Yea, that's not good. You might be able to find replacement parts online . If not, try the parts counter at your local Toyota dealer.

      My damper on my Avalon was loose when I unscrewed it. It just fell out! Have no idea how it goes back in. Thinking maybe the people at the service center may have broke it when I told them I'll replace the filter myself when they told me they wanted $40 to do it for me! Oh well...don't really need it anyway!

    I've retracted the two plastic clips on the sides of the cover, but I can't get the cover off. I've used a pair of pliers to try to pull the cover off, but I can't get it off. I guess the filter has not been change in ten years, so it's probably stuck. Any suggestions?

    I looked at your video and changed the cabin air filter. That thin black plastic cover slipped from my fingers while trying to replace it. It fell into the filter housing. I can feel it but the space is tight and I can't get it out. Help?

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, that's a tough one. I'd remove the filter element to get more room. If that won't do it, can you get a vacuum attachment down in there, maybe the vacuum will hold it enough to get your fingers on it. Thanks for watching!

    • @minimalistknitter
      @minimalistknitter ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestions, I'll try it. I think your video explained it best but I had watched others. No one ever mentioned dropping that black plastic cover into the filter housing as a possibility. I did not see that coming. Thanks for your videos and your suggestions.

  • @TU154B1

    INCORRECT! The airflow is from bottom to top, i.e. external dirty air comes from the bottom, the top of the filter is actually exposed to the interior of the car and you can see the top of the filter if you remove the stereo console in the center...

    • @dwcoffey
      @dwcoffey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No sir, please check the diagram on the ventilation system. Camry's are typical of most Toyotas, the filter is between the fresh air intake (from above) and the blower motor, which pulls air from above, into the system. The topside of the filter is exposed to the fresh air intake, therefore the air flow is from top to bottom.

    • @TU154B1
      @TU154B1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dwcoffey You are right Dennis, I am sorry I was misinformed, after dismantling the dash I noticed that the top of the filter is visible only when RECIRC is on, when set to fresh air, there is a duct that closes on top admitting fresh air to the top and the filter gets dirty on top confirming you are right and airflow is top to bottom.
