I really have to give a hand to our Finnish authorities. The last Chinese ship to cut a cable was guarded by the Danish and German on the international waters for weeks, before they let the Chinese conduct the (surely by the book) investigation. Now Finnish special forces just immediately boarded the ship and forced it into Finnish territorial waters for investigation. Finland again showing others how international terrorists should be handled.

As an alternative, ships going to Russia will not be allowed into the Baltic Sea

As said in this interview, the freedom of navigation is very strong. The Danish Straits are international waters, so the tankers can leagally enter Baltic Sea.

The information and insurance of all ships sailing in the Baltic Sea and visiting Russia must be examined before they are allowed to pass through the Danish Strait, and if everything is not in order, they will not be allowed to pass through.

International maritime law is clear! Those ships doesn’t fulfill requirements for ‘Innocent Passage’ through international waterways under ‘The Law Of the Sea’.

Heavily armed elite units of the Finnish border guard and police dropped from two military helicopters onto the deck of the tanker and the tanker is seized by Finland.

EU and NATO have every reason to announce that ANY destruction of any Baltic Sea infreastucture will be considered an act of piracy until investigators can prove otherwise. All ships involved will be confiscated until investigation completed. If proved it was not an accident ships crew will be put on trial to determine responsibility of ea, and the seizure and selling off of ship. Any country whose ships, via registration or ownership will be barred from EU and allied ports, any ship in those countries seized and impounded across the world and sold off to pay for damages, repairs, replacement and fines.
All well within legal frameworks. While ships owners can fight this, and even Russia to take to international court, it will take years, decades to trial out and until then ships rust in ports. The 'secret' ship owners would also need to expose themselves to fight impoundment. Gov't can then use that to trace back those owners supporters.
Of course, no reason you can't declare destruction of charted undersea cables an act of war. No reason it can't be.

@Luiki-o2vWait a minute.. Didn't the damage happen in the Finnish sea area? Yes it did.
After which the "foreign" ship went to the international sea area, from where it was "forced" to return to Finnish territory for investigations, because the broken sea cable broke at the same time as where / where the ship was traveling? Or am i wrong🤔?

The one that was stopped had Been in accidents several Times, changed name 5 Times and in need of lots of repair.

If russia is allowed to gain any land by means of this invasion then they will be back for the rest if not in nato by then. The russians went after the rest of ukraine after merkel shook his hand and bought his oil. No consequences, of consequence, were enacted after the russian invasion and illegal annexation of crimea. So no wonder he went back for the rest. He saw that nothing of consequence would happen.

Too much moral/legalistic fastidiousness in the face of aggression is fatal. Property rights are not divinely ordained. It is perfectly common in the domestic law of most states for individual and corporate rights such as property rights to be superceded in situations where a law-breaking individual or entity has assets seized or fines imposed. Why should it not be the same in international law? And if the accused party's defence is that they do not recognise that international law, then it is simply a proportional response to advise them that therefore they cannot rely on its protections. Seize their damn money!

Actually, Scandanavian countries and Baltic countries economic zones include almost all of Baltic sea. Infrastructure in those zones and their protection clearly protected under maritime law. There is no reason those countries can board any ship in their economic zone to inspect if ships present a hazard. If they equipment is well maintained to prevent accidental anchor drop, GPS works, they have charts with cables etc, emergency generators working, engines in good condition, sanitary procdeures adequate, leaks, bilge discharge. You could keep a ship sitting in the sea a day, or two, or three. If you debate that, you can't debate doing that when going through Scandnavian channels where passage is within a few miles of coasts. NATO and EU should fund and provide ships and personal to do so to every ship, both sides. To protect against ships grounding in storms while waiting for boarding, they can be ordered back into open ocean areas not part of economic or exploitation zones, or designated ports. Any ships that can prove electronically, file previously, significant insurance via acceptable companies, certainly based in countries that respect the rule of law, democracy, etc. to allow for victims proper compensation, which lets out Russia, China, tax havens, etc..
    Lets face it.
EU don't care about anything other than 'real' EU countries, France, Germany, and a few around them, Holland, etc.. Greece Italy Spain all considered inferior, E. Europe barbarians, Turkey 'unholy' terrorists, Baltics less than Gypsies, Scandnavians 'alien race'. It's the product of 3,000? more yrs of European racism that led to constant war for 2900 of those years.

Bought or blackmailed / extorted / entrapped every national gov't official but a few of the most inconsequential to leave some plausible deniability to that. That includes UK and US, most certainly UK and US.
